I just love how people who have never been to a single rodeo in their entire life, watching the PBR and NFR on T.V does not count people, Actually attended one, like the Mesquite Rodeo, or that don't even do some research, try to say the flank straps hurt the animals. BULL SHIT!! Cowboys and cowgirls have a love and passion for their animals, hence why they care for them like they do. You think they would use em' if it were actually hurting them? NO!

Who has actually trained a horse here? Or seen how these horses are treated at the farm- in most cases it is very well. Yes there are bad eggs in every sport. And no, I don't care if a horses natural instinct is to run. My horse will run and buck if even a blanket is on him. It doesn't have to hurt to annoy them. That's all that it does- annoy them.Just cuz they keep bucking doesn't mean pain.

not entirely true, the flank strap pinches a nerve, did u knowtice the people near the head of the horse on some of the videos, there hand was on the horses neck, mabey possible electrical prod was used. And no the horses are in pain because if they did want to " buck you off and get on with their business" they would stop bucking when to rider falls off, yet they still continue to do so with the same amout of force. A HORSES NATURAL INSTINCT IS TO RUN NOT TO BUCK!

@herewefly Have you ever ridden a horse, if not try it out and just touch the horses flank, my bet is that you will end up on the ground. As far as the "electrical prod" they are not that bad I have been hit with a hot shot more than once and I have used them on more than just live stock. Tingles more than anything.

@87Tigerfan Yes, I have ridden a horse (in fact I have been on the back of a horse for most of my life thank you very much)! Yes, I have trained MANY "loco" horses so I know what I am doing. No, if I touch a horses.'s flanks I dont end up on the ground. I have had some horses stand there, others bolt, some bunny hop around the round pen. I don't fall off often, I hold on pretty tightly.

@87Tigerfan Look, the electical prob is not allowed to be used in rodeos (because it inflicts pain and panick in the horses). Yet, they never inforce the rules. I know my horses, and those bucking horses arn't happy, they hurt and they are scared. it's not a horses natural instinct to buck, its to run. Thanks and good day! :P

@herewefly Are you kidding? I have 2 horses, and both of their natural instincts are to buck, then run. Horses are trained to buck, and the ones that truly love bucking, keep bucking. I work in rodeos all the time so I know what we do. We don't use electric prods, we don't pinch a nerve with the fucking flank strap. All the flank strap does is enhance the bucking.

@herewefly Most horses stop bucking after the rider is off and begin a slow jog. Only colts keep bucking. Most horse never kick with the same force through out the whole ride. The fisrt two or three jumps are always the hardest. And the flank doesnt pinch a nerve. You set if to where the horse thinks it can be kicked off but it wont. Horses are smart enough to know if its set to tight and they wont try it.

@herewefly educated response fail. The flank strap does not hurt or inflict pain in any way, shape or form. It does not 'pinch a nerve' (really, with how thick a horse's skin is, how would that be possible?) nor does it cover/put pressure on the genitals (if this were the case, why would mares buck?) I actually sold a mare to be bucking stock, and she is 100% sound and not in any pain (vet checked) when she's ridden. She bucks without a flank strap, so tell me how that is not instinct?

@Ntrlhrsgrl That's not true. I work at a ranch up in West Yellowstone. There are 62 horses up there that are used for tourist trail riding. All 62 of them are ex-rodeo horses. Horses are hardly ever injured or dogged in bronc riding. They love what they do.

@cocomango5189 I've worked in several rodeos. We aren't fucking cruel to horses. The flank strap doesn't hurt them, it just enhances the bucking. The horses love their job. They buck because they're trained to, and they LOVE IT. Spurs don't hurt the horse either. You don't stab the spurs into the horse, you lightly poke them with it, in case you do hit harder than you should, the metal on the spurs isn't sharp. You're a dumbass. Do your research better you dipshit.

The flank cinch is padded and not placed on the scrotum, a many bucking horses are mares (females- for those uneducated individuals) I would advise many of you to do a little bit of research and educate yourself on the topic at hand before commenting.

The strap is NOT on their sensitive parts, theyre right after, just to be a little annoying to incitate to buck a little harder. That strap is made of a sorf material and is removed right after the cowboy dismounts. I love horses and wouldnt let anyone mistreat horses like ive read on this page.

I'm tired of all these comments of people who don't know what they talk about.. I am a saddle bronc rider, I know how they treat horses because I am one of those who takes care of them. We are never cruel with them. The are teached to buck when they are young with a princip of dominance (cowboys fall volunteerly to show the horse it dominates). After that, the horse knows his job is to saddle down the cowboy to show they are the ones who dominate.
