We played well in the first game at Hampden but I though the tactics were wrong, and played into England's hands because they had a great counter-attacking team at that time. Still, it a was a courageous performance at Wembley and one to be proud of.
My recollection of this match is screaming at the TV for the final 20 minutes, telling Craig Brown to get another forward on. When he eventually did make a change, he took off our best forward McCann and replaced him with the lightweight Mark Burchill.
Brown did not have the bottle to go for the second goal - knowing, although a 1-0 win would put us out, it would keep him his job.

My recollection of this match is screaming at the TV for the final 20 minutes, telling Craig Brown to get another forward on. When he eventually did make a change, he took off our best forward McCann and replaced him with the lightweight Mark Burchill.
Brown did not have the bottle to go for the second goal - knowing, although a 1-0 win would put us out, it would keep him his job.

@gnostical I'd say the same in in respect of Scotland if they were the strongest of the home nations.. sportsmen of all nations don't want the easy option, they always want to test themselves against stronger teams ..chip on the old shoulder I think

@dimgwalltameiben Scotland vs england is ALWAYS a very hard and close match no matter how scotlands form is before hand , its a fact the scots always raise there game against the english and it would be a difficult match for england every single time. Any honest football fan would say the same unlike yourself as you dont seem to have a clue about these games or football.The scotland vs england games are a great thing to watch they are always played with passion,desire and pride on both sides.

Re-matcb soon apparently there are plans to reinstate the home internationals in 11! Should be more games between the home nations, nothing else could produce the same atmospheres.

Ok, let's just talk about facts, shall we? Your glib and ignorant "they [Wal/ire/sco] can accept losing to Eg 4 out of 5 times" is a little bit hasty as it is rooted in fiction.
Scotland have played England a combined total of 110 times. England have won 45 times and Scotland have won 41, and the rest were drawn.
45 to 41 is not "4 out of 5".

@TopherT1979 My 4 out of five stat is based on England's record against teams outside the FIFA top 40 and is more relevant/current than Eng v Scot 1872-1999. I'm not English nor arrogant I hope, just trying to be objective!

Did you watch England at the World Cup? Not exactly stuff of legends. I'll tell you this, Scotland may not be world beaters, but Craig Levein is building clear foundations. If England played Scotland tomorrow, it would be close.
When push comes to shove, the Scotland players would rise to the challenge, like we have with Holland, France x 2, Spain, ect, in recent years. And let's face it, the aformentioned teams are better than England.

The original point I was trying to make wasn't to rubbish Scotland, but this:England generally do OK in qualifying, make it to the knock out phase and get brought back down to earth by Hol, Ger Spain etc. A bi-annual tournament with this trio would benefit England a hundred times more than the tradition home internationals!

@dimgwalltameiben I get your point, but I disagree. Playing the home nations would stir the blood more than playing Germany, Spain and Holland, therefore it would be beneficial when the pressure was really on them
Personally I don't care than England aren't going to take part in the upcoming home tournament. The only one who will be missing out are the England fans
You have to admit,you did suggest that Scotland, Wales and Ireland would be fodder to England. I can assure you, it wouldn't be so

We were Immense that night, we truly had them camped in there own penalty box for most of the game and it will be noted for all history that it was SCOTLAND not England that WON the last time the sides met and that it was supposed to be the last game at the old WEMBLEY but the English FA crapped themselves and picked a friendly with Germany to be the last game and LOST ouch.! we didn't qualify for euro 2000 but we will rise now and be a WINNER again Just you watch.

you are wrong and i will correct you - this was SUPPOSED to be England's last ever game as the old wembley, but after this defeat they decided to have at least 1 more game in hope of a win - and lost 0-1 to Germany in Oct 2000. And Kegan quit...

So yes, Scotland were the last team to beat England, at the old Wembley, in a game that mattered and had something at stake.
