  • I actually like the reissue pickups more than the originals.

  • Comment removed

  • hey larry i have a question im planning to put a bluesbucker in my AS73 what would be a good pickup what would balance out the sound and give me a clear but fat sound on my bridge pup

  • @jpjdo1212

A 36th Anniversary PAF bridge model (DP223) should be a good choice.

  • I hope you didn't lost that tross rod cover, that little piece of plastic must worth a lot !

By the way, how must did you bought your 59' ?... and how do you think she worth today ?

    Just curious :P

  • Ok I'll be the one to ask you Larry, why there is no truss rod cover on your grail? I also have this DiMarzio on my Trad and they sound A W E S O M E. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GREAT JOB. =)

  • @Punkdebutique Hi, Thanks for your kind comment.

Regarding the truss rod cover, no reason, I just never put it back on after adjusting it at one day.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • The neck and middle setting are much better for smooth and strat like sounds. there's alot of definition coming from them.

However I still think that the bridge pickups have nothing on a Breed Bridge or Mo Joe.

  • The 59' hands down killed it! The other guitar wasn't in the ball park from the start. Get a guitar that is acoustically as loud to begin with then do this comparison. My guess is it will be a lot more of a comparison. The reissue wasn't even a 1/3rd as loud as the original.

  • @ARNOLD1982DEAL Hi, That is the point. The original guitar is louder and sustains better acoustically, and that is why we made the 36th Anniversary. You can't just make a clone of the original pickup. The '59 is a special guitar and we made adjustments to get the sound closer to my original.

    Hope that helps,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio I have played over the years many real 59's at my friends Vic DaPra's, I also have used the new pickups, both are great, but to the point. There are amazing real 59's as well as let downs just like any guitar, it seems most people only seem to understand this in full acoustic guitars (Martin's) for the most part when it comes to acoustic properties. The nice thing is the Paf's as well as all the DiMarizo pickups and consistent, and knowing my instruments have never had an issue.

  • @LarryDiMarzio I understand what your saying but the demos clearly shows your 59' original (which is beautiful by the way) is incredible. 36th Anniversary PAF's sound good but lets be real the only way a guitar is going to sound good is if it resonates acoustically. The reissue sounded bad acoustically. I'm not saying thats your fault, but I am saying get something with better acoustic qualites first. Then do this test. Love your pickups btw I'm just giving a Humble opinion.

  • Hi Larry,I have a question, do the 36th anniversary PAF's come in a "set"?can you get them to work of your guitar has a coil tap?my guitar has 2 volumes and 1 tone/coil tap. If I'm trying to get a vintage tone out of a new guitar these will work right?

  • @RandyRhoadsFan96

We make a standard model and a bridge model which work well as a set, but they can both be combined with other pickups, depending on the sound you want. All of our humbuckers can be coil-tapped. Email us at tech@dimarzio.com for a wiring diagram. No pickup is guaranteed to get a vintage tone from every guitar, but we've gotten very good results with the 36th Anniv. models.

  • DAMN...

  • Hi Larry,

Will the PAF 36th anniversary sound good on a Dean Vendetta XM (china)? Mine has a Paulownia body. I want to achieve a vintage les paul sound out of my guitar but at the same time i want the sound to be versatile and not just rock. But I don't know which type of DiMarzio pickups to get. I'm also looking at the pro joe and mo joe for my neck and bridge. Any advise? Thanks!

  • @vss555

The total sound depends a lot on the type of amp you use, and your guitar is not constructed the same way as a Les Paul. A standard-spaced PAF in the neck and F-spaced PAF bridge model in the bridge position should be good choices, but it's impossible to know in advance how close the sound will be to what you are looking for.

  • @LarryDiMarzio

I'm using a Vox VT20+ tube amp. Thanks for the advice. Can you please message me the model numbers of the pafs recommended for the neck & bridge? basically my target is simply to make a cheap guitar sound good. =) thanks!

  • @vss555

The neck pickup is DP103 and the bridge pickup is DP223F. You will need to specify the color you want. You can see all of the available color options on the DiMarzio website.

  • Hi Larry. I just got me a Pair of OEMs from a Silhouette that i think are Virtual PAF's.

Are they similar to the 36th anniversary in terms of sound? I haven't installed them yet and the pickups in this video sounds great!

  • @wuwei5150

They are not identical, but they are fairly similar.

  • Thank you for sharing the new video !

    Guitar World

    John

  • @farkoffccb

We make pickups that fit the description in terms of performance, but we do not have any "cheap quality pickups". All of our pickups are made in our factory in the US, and we don't have a lower-price alternative line.

  • Great pick ups! I had a question..if i want to put Gibson 57 classic into my les Paul traditional as neck pickup, which bridge pick up would you recommend? I'm looking to do some coil split and parallel wiring as well for more tonal variation..would dp223 be my best shot?

  • @seankim228 dude, 57 Classics come stock in LP Traditionals. Did you check the specs when you bought the guitar?

  • Hi Larry, just wanted to ask which bridge pickup do you recommend for a Gibson Les Paul? I always wanted to get a punchy rhythm when I play chords and have that sort of rusty sound but still sound like a PAF when I'm playing lead guitar. thanks :)

  • @Killergamerz4975

It would be good to know what the current bridge pickup is and what you don't like about its sound. If you can email this info to tech@dimarzio.com, it should be possible to recommend the best pickup.

  • That's it... I'm buying a pair of 36 PAFs!!!!!!!! Thanks to Larry for doing what every bluesrock guitarist desires! :D

  • Doc!

  • I need a smooth tone from my neck pickup in my Les Paul. I don't know if I should go with an Alnico II magnet neck pickup or an Alnico V. I currently have the Air Classic and it sounds great clean, but when overdriven it sounds a bit too muddy as a result of the midrange scoop of the EQ for the Air Classic. I think I may eventually try out a 4-conductor version of a Gibson '57 Classic pickup, but I don't know if the DiMarzio DP103 would be better than a '57 Classic with an Alnico II magnet.

  • @The1970sInfatuate

Your problem with the AIr Classic is a little puzzling because the magnetic field of the Air Classic performs like AL II rather than like AL V, and a mid range scoop usually produces a less muddy overdriven sound. You might want to check the control values, since some Les Pauls use 300K pots, and 500K will be brighter and more open with overdrive.

  • @LarryDiMarzio I'm thinking it might have to do with my particular overdrive pedal and how I have it set. I was also considering installing a treble bleed circuit on the neck volume pot. Currently, I have an entire Jimmy Page mod in my Les Paul, with 4 push/pull pots. The tone caps I have are .022µF orange drops. I think I might get a nicer, more smooth overdriven tone from the Air Classic if I have a treble bleed mod. It sounds muddy when I turn the volume down any lower than about 8.

  • @LarryDiMarzio I have a boutique overdrive pedal (the Xotic BB Preamp MB) which I use for a British cranked mids type of tone. The setting I use on that pedal may be a too aggressive tone for my Air Classic pickup. I'm wanting to try installing a treble bleed mod on my neck volume pot so that I can turn down the volume of my Air Classic pickup and not loose all the brightness. If I turned the volume knob down on my neck pickup, I'm thinking the tone will clean up and not be so overdriven.

  • I go a 36 anniversary in a ibanez ,:I love it ,sounds more like th real 59

  • I want that classic jimmy page Les Paul tone would this be good for it? I have a Gibson burstbucker alnico5 in the bridge right now I'm just wondering if this will be on par with it.

  • @PhysicalGraffiti10

Yes. It should be a good choice.

  • @LarryDiMarzio thanks.

  • I love the flame on Larry's '59, it almost looks like a quilt :)

  • Man, any Dimazio's will sound amazing in any guitar. You will notice it most in asian made cheaper guitars, after that its the icing on the cake.

  • Hi.

    1. nice guitar!

    2. are u really larry dimarzio? if u are: OMG!

    3. im thinking of buying the area 58 and 61 for my strat. they sound great on youtube, do they also sound that awesome in real life?

    4. i really cant believe that u are the real larry dimarzio, its so cool that someone like u really answers those messages...... (if u really are him ofcourse)

  • Hi larry,

Does Vinnie Moore of UFO use your pickups? In one of his guitars I noticed he used some kind of humbucker that was shaped like a single coil with two lines. If so, do you know what specific pickups? It's really help me get a similar sound. Thanks,

    Mitch

  • @MitchRulzWorld

I am not certain what he is using today, but for the last few years he was using a Fast Track 1 in the neck and a Virtual Vintage Blues in the middle position.

  • @LarryDiMarzio thanks so much for the reply. Here's the video I saw them in if you're interested.

    watch?v=AcUD0RxRG8A

  • My first good guitar was a 1971 Les Paul Deluxe that somebody had hogged out for humbuckers. I went out straight away and bought a pair of zebra DiMarzio PAFs. To this day (been playing for 30 years now), I have YET to find a humbucker that sounds as good as those DiMarzios. I am not surprised in the least that these new versions are excellent. Now I'm jonesing for another Les Paul just so I can pick up a set of these PAFs. Way to go, DiMarzio! Y'all rock!

  • Hi Larry,

I have an epiphone Black Beauty. Do you think these would be a good fit in such a guitar?

    Thanks!

  • @GuitarAtoZ1

Yes, depending on the type of sound you are looking for.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Sorry, Should have clarified that! I play probably a mix between 70's rock/blues and some more modern technical style playing. Would these be a fit? I already have a PAF Pro neck and an Evolution bridge on a les paul and I love them, but for the Black Beauty I am looking for more of a vintage element to the tone.

    Thanks Again,

    Bryan.

  • @GuitarAtoZ1

Then the answer is yes. Standard-spaced for the neck, F-spaced for the bridge.

  • @LarryDiMarzio whoa, just noticed you said F spaced for the bridge. I that makes me wonder...I bought one of these pickups, with the nickel cover for the bridge of my Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro. It's regular spaced. Will it cause any problems for me if I install it?

  • The pickups are totally different.

  • @PBANDSNOW Hi, Yes I agree, and the guitars are very different. If I took the pickups out of my guitar and put them in Paul's guitar they would sound different too. My guitar is louder, sustains longer, is smoother .... the list goes on and it's not just the pickup. We wanted capture the qualities of a great old Les Paul and bring that into a new guitar.

    Hope that helps,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio O, is the wiring of the original 59 pickups the same as the 36th anniversary to give it a more vintage sound?

  • @PBANDSNOW Hi, Yes, both guitars were wired with 500K pots and .02 caps.

    All the best

    Larry

  • @LarryDiMarzio Awesome! Are you the real Larry DiMarzio? I thought you would be in some mansion in paradise being serenaded by the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Good to know that success doesn’t change everyone.

  • @PBANDSNOW Hi, Yes, I am the real Larry DiMarzio and I enjoy staing as real as I can. However, I do like your idea of paradise.

    Regards,

    Larry

  • 9 gauge? mam, whack some 11's on that baby to get some real meaty tone

  • This test would've been so much better with a clean tone as well, not just distorted.

  • Hye man, I just got a nighthawk and I am thinking about maybe gettting some dimarzios set in, If I got this in the bridge, what would you reccomend for the neck's mini-bucker? Please get back to me man thanks :D

  • @endlessillusion34

I'm not certain which version of the Nighthawk you have, but the old one had a slanted humbucker in the bridge position, and we don't make humbuckers in this format. If the bridge pickup is a standard humbucker, a PAF should be good, and it will go well with a Vintage Minibucker neck model.

  • @LarryDiMarzio thanks, would you happen to know anyone whoe makes slanted humbuckers? Sorry to bug but I am kinda concerned with the tone.

  • @endlessillusion34

The only one I'm aware of is James Tyler Guitars.

  • @LarryDiMarzio thanks man i appreciate it

  • Hey Larry, Plz reply to my question. Does this pickup match well with the Super Distortion as the bridge pickup and the PAF in neck position? ur answer would be lifesaving plz reply :)

  • @ecgedsel

Pickup choice is a matter of personal taste, but a PAF & Super Distortion set usually works very well.

  • I'm sure pleased with the way the 36th Anni PAF sounds in the bridge of my ES-335. I prefer the somewhat meatier, middy DiMarzio 36th PAF to Duncan's 59, which I found thin and borderline shrill.

  • Hey Larry, I use the Super Distortion in my guitar which has got Alder body and Maple neck & fretboard. I use it in Drop B and Drop A tuning and WOW! tight tone ala Slipknot (also the live tone of Mick Thomson) and crazy pinch harmonics that are richer and louder that I heard from active pickups! and that grind and punch is great. My friend changed the AHB3s (mick's pikcups) for your Super Ds! and he likes the tone, very modern and great for low tunings & also great tone for shredding! thanks

  • Hi, We used a VOX AC 15 (Paul's choice). The guitars were plugged straight into the amp with no effects or distortion.

    Hope that helps,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • and the amp is ?

  • how can an original fifty nine look so clean and unbeaten

  • YEP, 50 years works wonders.

  • hi Larry, i m seriously considering these PAFs for my Les paul copy guitar. My current pickups aren't very dynamic and brittle sounding. Should these pickups help me by providing better dynamics and how do they work with the volume knob??,which is my main concern. I play blues/classic rock and i m considering them for both bridge and neck positions. My guitar is mahagony body and top. Please bless me with your suggestion :-D

  • @Manaslash

. It's impossible to make direct comparisons because I don't know what your current pickups are, but I think these PAFs have very good dynamics and work well with the volume control.

  • @LarryDiMarzio thanks for the reply sir, it ll be enough for me to go out and buy them .

  • Hey Guys!

Great Demo, your gear simply is the greatest on the market!

My Question would be: I'd like to to pimp my Epi Les Paul a bit, to get a good hard rock sound, but it should also be versatile. So I thought of a Super Distortion in the Bridge and one of these PAF 36th Anniversary in the neck, you think that would fit?

  • Wow is it only me, or is the original '59 Les Paul kicking the cr*p out of any other guitar!?!

  • will an 36th anniversary Paf neck work good with an d activator x bridge?

  • @mmtzcI

It will be very obvious with a clean amp sound that the D Ac-X is louder than the PAF, but there shouldn't be a big mismatch with an overdriven sound.

  • Hi Larry! I ordered a bridge pickup for my 1979 Les Paul Custom. I want that classic, vintage Les Paul tone and I love the warm guitar sounds of the 60's and 70's. I currently have your Al DiMeola pickup in the bridge. I had issues with the original pickup back in the late 80's and replaced it on a reco and have never been satisfied. Since I don't have the specs on the DiMeola, do you think I made a good choice in replacing it with the 36th Anniversary?

  • @ApeLikeCreature

Yes, assuming it's the PAF bridge model (DP223).

  • @LarryDiMarzio

Yes, it's the bridge pickup. It came yesterday in the mail, I'm excited to get it installed. Thank you for your reply!

  • why do this demo with od? we all have different od's, and want to hear how this ounds by itself, i hate when people dont do that, demo the pickup, not the pickup plus a pedal, i want to hear how the pickup sounds clean cause thats what im buying, when you order a pickup it doesnt come with a od

  • Hey Larry, really impressed with your attention to customers. Your pickups seem great too. I'm planning on modifying a cheap strat copy that has good wood. I want to put in some area noiseless single coil pickups, but here's my question. Would it be bad to have the same pickup in each position? What would you suggest? Thanks again,

    Mitch

  • @MitchRulzWorld

It isn't possible to give a useful answer without knowing what type of sound you want. If you email tech@dimarzio.com with a description, we can suggest some pickup choices.

  • Hi Larry, I bought this pickup for the neck and super distortion for the bridge, put them in my jackson dinky js and I really fell in love the sound, it sounds inceible for riffs, chords and solos, I see the pickup in that gibson has two small square holes on the sides of the pickup My pickups do not have that little hole You know why?

  • @maidencobhc

The pickup in the video is the vintage version of the PAF, which has square holes in the bobbins. The standard version does not have these holes, but the actual performance of the pickup is identical.

  • hey i play death, thrash, progressive metal i want to put the x2n in bridge how would the neck version be? guitar is mahogany i want a good clean tone and i dont like pickups that are to warm sounding thanks

  • @FirePower3006

Both the D Actvator neck model and the Super 2 are bright-sounding and have enough power to balance well with an X2N.

  • @LarryDiMarzio thanks i'll go with the super 2 on they dimarzio website the bass is really low so thats good

  • WHAT ABOUT THE FLUX CAPACITOR?!!

  • I have an Epiphone LE Custom shop flame top Dot that features some CS upgrades, ie switch craft switch, Grover tuners, and Epiphones version of the Classic '57 pick ups. I've been looking to upgrade the pickups, and these may be just the thing I'm looking for. Would you consider upgrading the volume and tone pots also?

  • Hey Larry, what pickup do you offer that will give me a very woody, 3D midrange, with bright airy high end (not harsh)? Would this PAF be it?

  • @MrMutron

Yes, but every guitar is different, and it's impossible to be certain in advance how a pickup will perform in any specific instrument.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Hey Larry, are the pickup rings you sell modeled after the old m-69s?

  • @JimmyPage968

Not specifically. The ring dimensions are based on the 2 most popular sizes for most neck and bridge position pickups.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Oh well that puts a damper on things. I was really hoping they were the same size.

  • does the type of cable running to your guitar make a difference in tone? if its a noob question sorry, but i dunno....he said he had a satriani cable, i dont know if i should buy a new cable along new pickups

  • @TrippyTheShroom Hi, Yes, cables make a difference in sound but changing the pickup will make a much bigger improvement.

    Hope that helps,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio ya, currently my cable is made by some no name generic brand (not to say its bad or anything) but it was like...10$ lol....

the DiMarzio pickups are DEFINITELY impressing me, im comparing them with a slew of other brands, Gibson, Seymour Duncan, Bare Knuckles etc. and they seem to have an edge that i've not seen in these other brands....you guys are doin great work, keep it up

  • Hi Larry,

I'm looking for an old-school Eddie Van Halen tone in my strat. I was pointed in the direction of these PAFs. Would you recommend these or something else?

    Thanks

  • @RedJimiGuitar

An F-spaced PAF brdge model (DP223F) would be my first choice.

  • the original 59 sounds much more clear and bright to me, and the reissue sounds a little dull to me when compared to the original, but then again the 50 year old wood probably helps . Anyhow, great to be able to hear the real thing, thanks Larry and Paul for giving us the chance to hear them both.

  • Great vid, think I'll buy those pickups but I would like to know if the two 36 th anniversary in the reissue are the dp103 or if it's two different pickups? (sorry for my bad english I'm from belgium ^^) thx for your vid ;)

  • @toni111090

The neck pickup is the DP103. The bridge pickup is the bridge model (DP223).

  • Sorry for the double post. The first comment didnt do through for a couple days, so I posted it again. thanks!

  • I'm blown away by these!! These are one of my favorite humbuckers out there!

I just put the 36th Anniv. P.A.F. into yet another one of my guitars....this makes 4 of them!

  • Larry, those pickups in the '59 are the best I have heard. ala Live jimmy page tone.

Were both guitars wired up the same with the same pots, caps ect?

So are these PAF 36th pickups the Closest sounding to the original that you make?

  • @MrMutron

Both guitars had 500K controls. Original Les Pauls had .02mFd capacitors. Current Les Pauls have .022mFd caps, but it's a very small difference.

  • Hey Larry, GREAT vid. Question though, Which Dimarzio Pickup would be the CLOSEST sounding to the pickups in this original '59? Sweetest tone I've heard. ala Live jimmy page tone.

  • @MrMutron

The PAF (DP103) is the closest. Keep in mind that Gibson didn't make neck and bridge pickups in the 50s & 60s, so the sound would be closest with the DP103 in both positions.

  • I've been playing these on my '59 Historic for over a year. My Les Paul is wired as per Jimmy Page's specs on his LP. Both neck and bridge are coil tapped. The bridge has a phase reverse. With this, I can nail Page's tone and still have enough great heavy metal tone left over. I would recommend these pickups to anybody who wants their R9 to sound like an original '59.

  • Will it be fine if I install it to my Cort KX5 (basswood body)? How does it sound when coil tapped?

  • Hear how much clearer/louder the '59 is? It's the WOOD.....pickups are last on the list.

These Dimarzio pickups are great (as are '59 PAFs), but without the wood, it's a useless comparison.

  • @Whicol2 Hi, You are right. I asked Paul to compare the two guitars unplugged because part of the sound is the guitar. I wanted people to hear how good this original sounds. However, pickups make the biggest single difference in the sound of an electric guitar.

    Hope that helps.

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio Actually........................Speakers make the biggest difference,as they are the largest transducer. This is common and broadly accepted knowledge, regardless of guitar brand or style.

  • @wilddutch I disagree, the key is the source.

    Larry DiMarzio

  • FAIL. How can they assume that it's an even match.

As if pickups are the ONLY factor in a guitar's tone? It's probably one of the last features, in my opinion (sorry, Dimarzio...)....so of course the reissue LP fails to compare to the original Burst.

  • great vid thanx x sharing, may I ask which brand of strings are on both guitars??? please let us know :-) thanks a lot

  • @dirtyTony666 Hi, Both guitars were set up with brand new D'Addario 9s.

    Hope that helps,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio sure, youre great, thanks a lot

  • great comparison, thanks for sharing may I ask which brand/type of strings are both guitars??? thanks a lot

  • fuck the original sounds good! but if i heard both in a live situation i bet i would be so impressed with both

  • wow its a steve vai cable!!!!!!

  • another reason not to buy into the Historic crap. I like them but you can get better for less, by avoiding the "Gibson" company now.

  • Why not simply use one guitar and exchange the pickups? Not to mention the annoying sloppy pentatonic stuff this guy plays, what do I want to say is-when I think of a Les Paul, I think of Whole lotta love, All right now, and that kind of stuff, but this guy didn't play a riff for 2 seconds.

  • @markomatijevic Good idea (very scientific) but I am not going to take the pickups out of the original 59 cherry burst.

I am sure that if the pickups were removed that it would reduce the value and originality of the guitar.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio oh cmon now Mr. Dimarzio, its not like that 59' is worth that much ;) haha

Its cool of you to share it with other artists, I, myself, would be afraid to have anyone look at it, much less touch it ;)

  • @markomatijevic - its a demo dude...not a lesson...nice pick-up Mr. Larry. Planning to buy that PAF 36th anniversary and put it in my 1989 Burny Super Grade. =).

    cheers!

  • Jez!! Whatta difference! Almost, like a toy gun compared to real one..... unbelieavable. The Reissue '59. didn't come even close to the sound of original '59.

I mean, it surely IS Les Paul sound and sounds good... but man, what a difference! I want those ol' ones... :))

  • @kokybhakta Hi, Thanks for your comment. You are right, part of the sound is the guitar, it is louder and fuller than the re-issue. This is one of the reasons that DiMarzio just doesn't just copy the pickups. We alter them to deliver more of the original '59 overall tone. This way they are closer to the sound of my original.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • I have these pickups in several of my HSS formatted Fender Highway One Stratocasters and absolutely LOVE them!!!

They have wonderful vintage/classic rock tones flowing out of them!!

    Thank You Larry!!!

  • I bought this pickupp for my ibanez S, wonder what that would sound like... did not think before i bought.

  • @woksin

It should have a lot of clarity in an Ibanez S. You just need to be a little careful about how much treble you dial in on your amp, because S-series guitars can be pretty cutting on the high strings.

  • @LarryDiMarzio well... actually I bought a "weird" combo for my ibanez s guitar. a Evo 2 in bridge, HS-2 In middle and PAF 36th in neck

  • did anyone mention how much of a hot carl the original takes on the reissue?

  • Hi, My dad gave a an old no name telecaster (at least 1970's, He swapped it in a bar for a crappy squire strat) It had one DiMarzio humbucker and one fender strat single coil. it's a pretty strange set up but it apparently sounded really good. unfortunately neither of them work any more, so I'm thinking of doing it up. do you think this would make a good replacement for a nice old vintage sound and also do what would you recommend for a single coil?

    Thanks.

  • @IAreCrazyChris

I have no idea, since it depends on what you mean by a vintage sound. It would also be useful to see a photo of the guitar if possible, which you could send to tech@dimarzio.com with a description of the sound you're looking for.

  • Hi, My dad gave a an old no name telecaster (at least 1970's, He swapped it in a bar for a crappy squire strat) It had one DiMarzio humbucker and one fender strat single coil. it's a pretty strange set up but it apparently sounded really good. unfortunately neither of them work any more, so I'm thinking of doing it up. do you think this would make a good replacement for a nice old vintage sound and also do what would you recomend for a single coil?

    Thanks.

  • A buddy of mine replaced the stock pups in his PRS DGT with two 36th Anniversary PAF neck pups, and he's not going back.

  • Since the day of it's introduction the anniversary model has become my all time favorite humbucker . That's why comes standard on my signature model Lipe The Ivo. Thanks to Larry and Steve my dream humbucker has become true love it,love it,love it.............

  • Thank you for the suggestion. I went to the website and it was very helpful. These are the results: Air Norton (neck), Super Distortion (bridge), Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues (center single). Pickups for classic rock with added sustain used with my Fender Champion tube amp. I want to use this guitar for rock with more blues influences. Should I go for it?

  • If I placed these in my Ibanez GR what would I put in the middle for the single coil? Do you think the sound would be good in that body shape?

  • @paulgaudinjrBCN

You would normally put a True Velvet middle pickup (DP175S) in the middle. The sound should be perfectly good, but whether these pickups are your best choice will depend on the sound you are looking for. If you like, email us at tech@dimarzio.com with a description of the sound you want so we can offer useful recommendaions.

  • Great demo! It would be nice to hear both the original PAFs and the reissues in a clean demo. I think clean tones are very useful in order to hear the true voice of a pickup and a guitar. Sorry for my english :)

  • Wow, Larry's '59 is much livelier acoustically! And, man is that thing BEAUTIFUL!!! I think the amplified sound is close enough that some EQ adjustment on the amp would make them nearly identical. Now if they would make 'em with a top as nicely figured as the original '59!

  • Ok, I'm officially getting this pickup. lol it sounds fantasitc! i've got an Epiphone Dot, and I really think this pickup will sound cool in a semi-hollow body. I was going to have it coil-tapped, and I was curious; would that compromise any tonal integrity of the tone or anything? I mean would that be a good idea to do with a pickup like this?

    Thanks :)

  • @99centstore

A coil-tap won't cause any compromise in performance (assuming it's installed correctly, of course). In an Epi, the bridge pickups should be F-spaced and the neck pickup should be standard-spaced.

  • The reissue is lacking just a tad bit of top end, but I'm sure it has modern wiring and not the original wiring. Sounds like a great pickup! Can't wait to get one

  • the original 59 is so fuckin beautyful

  • I just bought a Paul with these PU's in it and I think the Pu's are the reason I couldn't put it down. I went to the Guitar shop to buy cables , and I decided to try out the nice les paul on the wall. I regularly play LP"s and I've always been dissapointed with them. I finally found a Paul that sounds like the "holy Grail". I tried a new EVH guitar, the american made one, an Damn, what a piece of garbage. I can't believe someone would pay 3000 for that piece of S&*t. Thanks Larry, awesome PU'S!

  • amazing pickups good for zeppelin kinda sound, butaway he got the best job ever !!

  • wo0t! these are gonna sound sick in my custom guitar I am having made. I am throwing one in the neck and a super distortion in the bridge.

  • @theamericanpsycho79 Thanks fo your comment, that is one of my favorite combos.

    Thanks,

    Larry

  • I wish he could have demoed this with a more boutique overdrive pedal, like a Homebrew Electronics "Big D." This just sounds like a shitty Boss SD-1.

  • @The1970sInfatuate There was no over drive peddle, it is just the Vox AC 30.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio That explains it. I have a Vox amp, and the Vox gain sounds terrible. I just turn the gain up a tiny bit to get a little extra volume. I solely rely on my two boutique overdrive pedals to get a nice overdriven tone.

  • @The1970sInfatuate This is called "getting schooled".

  • @LarryDiMarzio

Thank you very much for these pickups!

I ve got a 59 replica built of the same wood to the very specifications of an original 59 burst!

I tryed 10 different PAF models from different manufacturers. I payed between €200,- and €799,-

I saw this video maybe 300 times and finally gave your 36 th anniversary model a try!

    I m really blown away!

You really nailed that famous pickup!

    I m impressed so much!

I feel whole lotta love for these!!!!

  • @GrandZeppelinBand Hi and thanks for your kind comment. I am glad that you are happy with our work and I will pass your message along to our design team.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • Dimarzio whe really need demos for clear, dirty, distorted, sound of you many different pickups, I mean true single coils, and humbucker, including the single coil size humbucking pickups, \nd others, I'm a absolute fan of you products, I really want to tanks dor you amazing products.

  • hello, I'm Italian, so I apologize for my English XP in this new world of music, I know that uses pickups this guitar?

  • @flem187

You might try an Air Classic neck model (DP190) if clarity is the most important quality you are after.

  • How come that you don't use ALNICO 2,3,4,6,8 magnets in your Humbucker pickups?

I have used your pups since 1978 LOVE EM Thanks

  • @pleximanic

We like the stability and consistency of Alnico 5, and we have found other ways to produce the sonic qualities of the other Alnico magnet grades.

  • hey Larry, could you do a video for super distortions and super 3s?? I know they are not brand new, but they are very popular.

    Andrej

  • @StagemasterHSH Hi, Thanks for the good idea, I will get on to my list.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio thank you very much, I am really happy :DDDD

    Cheers from Slovakia

    Andrej

P.S.: your pickups are much better sounding than other brands, keep going! :))

  • @pleximanic Hi, Thanks for your kind comment. I recently answered your question in PG. (please Google Premier Guitar + Larry DiMarzio, Youtube doesn't post the direct links)

    Hope this helps,

  • Bummer! Can't tell a thing without clean samples.

  • @oakmcgowan Hi, Thanks for your suggestion, I am planing some additional videos and will try to incorporate some clean examples.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • I'd say 75/25 in favor of the real '59. of course, your going to pay about 400 thousand extra for that.

  • The old 59 looks so unaffected of time. I´m used to see photos where the burst is faded and the nitro finish cracking up a bit. Is this one extremely well cared for, or did it have som kind of re-finish? Very good video btw, with comparison of the acoustic tone.

  • @baskethilt Hi, This one is in good condition but you can see the fading and age marks better in this video. Please Youtube search Larry DiMarzio's Original 1959 Gibson Les Paul. (the direct link won't post)

    Hope this helps,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • The short blues rideout on "A Long Time Coming" - that's real Les Paul tone - not this.

  • Do you use F-spaced pickups? Becausse I realy like the sound and I want them in my Gibson les paul BFG Gary Moore.
