  • LOL! Well, even the big masters did this too..

There's Tex AVery's "Slap Happy Lion"..and Chuck Jones with all of his 1940s dark humor stuff, The Three Bears, etc.still classic..

  • LOL at the end!!!!!:)

  • I hated Herman & Katnip and this particular cartoon gave me nightmares when I was a child. That eye thing terrified me.

  • I imagine that after running a couple of miles, Katnip stops and sez : Heyyyy wait a minute!

Then slowly takes the fake eyes out and facepalms himself!

  • What makes it even worse is that when Katnip is running around screaming,"I can't see!" Winston Sharples put the song Three Blind Mice over the soundtrack! Hilarious!

  • am i the only one creeped out by that damn elephant?

  • @fuckyounotme1

No, you're not. This particular cartoon gave me nightmares as a child.

  • I haven't "SEEN" this gag in over 30 years, and it is my dead ass favorite out of all the "Herman and Katnip" gags! I LAUGHED so hard then and now! THANK YOU!

  • I guess Jack Mercer's not the only one who can POP EYES!

  • @TVkingOmega

Right. Syd Raymond did as well (he did the Junyer Bear/Stan Freberg like voices for Katnip and Baby Huey).

  • That was hillarious! I half expected Katnip to get run over by a car in the end!

  • Poor taste, but I can't stop laughing. "I can't see!!!!"

  • @buzzlewie "Poor taste, but I can't stop laughing."

WHAT is in poor taste?? I'd love to see a response.

  • Katnip was such an anal cavity.

  • Can't find one shred of poor taste...

  • @PyrotechnicAnarchy

I'm pretty sure it's because of the way the Elephant taxidermy is destroyed. If you really want to get into it, the "extinct" sign also implies that he dies.

  • This is so much better than Tom and Jerry.

  • I really don't see why this cartoon is in poor taste... Maybe I'm not getting something.

  • i don't like it :(

  • Its funny, things we see in bad taste now would be hilarious in the past.

  • That bit with the eyes still creeps me out even after 40 years. Ironic how Katnip in fact sees his "eyes" lying on the floor, crams them into his own eyes; his subsequent panic and screaming "I can't see!" just cross the line into horror. Yes, it's his own dumb mistake, but it bothers me even now. At the least I'd have the glass eyes pop out at the end of the cartoon.

    Herman is such a smartass.

  • @PandaMishima

I'm with you there, Panda. I remember being so terrified by that pop eye scene and being upset that poor, stupid Katnip couldn't see. I actually had nightmares about this. It bothers me now, too and I like your idea of at least having the fake eyes pop out before the final curtain.

That and considering that I hated Herman & Katnip to begin with.

  • We watch these old cartoons for the same reason we watch "Mad Men": We like to see how people honestly behaved, before political correctness.

  • @conradjulian

At FIRST I thought you referred to He-Man...:)

  • Poor taste because of insensitivity to the dumb LOL!

Please upload the scene from this cartoon where Katnip had a hilarious accident with some knives.

    Thanks for posting!

  • Its crude and in bad taste, but i couldnt help laughing.

  • Poor taste because of insensitivity to the blind, no doubt.

But many other endings were a lot grosser. Let's set up a stunned cat to be electrocuted. Then, to accomplish that, take his tongue and SET IT ON FIRE. Oh, well, when he gets flattened later into an amusement park target-toy, the fire and pain are over. So I guess that makes it okay.

    Can we see that one?

    Pretty, pretty please?

  • @ForwardMan3001

Well said, ForwardMan3001. I thought this cartoon was scary and that eye thing gave me nightmares. I agree that it is in atrocious taste and is a mean spirited ridicule of people who can't see. I don't like that. Even in 1956, I'd like to think compassion and reason existed. Too bad those qualities were not reflected in cartoons of this ilk. Herman was a mean little bastard and Katnip was just stupid and oafish. Even when I was a little girl, I didn't like H&K.

  • @BeatleBangs1964

I love this, but I agree you're right about it being atrocious taste despite my own love of these...but there are more grotesue eye gags in the 3 Stooges..:)

  • Actually, this make Itchy and Scratchy look whimsical and innocent.

  • Surrrre... But only the same way more traditional slasher flicks make the campy parodies look whimsical and innocent.

the murder, torture,, and even psychological torment-- It's all been done before, and often in a pretty "sick" way. (Though even little kids know that a cartoon cat , bird or worm is not real.) Therefore, SO WHAT if Itchy slaughters Scatchy in a thousand torturous ways?

  • "Hilariously poor taste" made me think of something MUCH worse.
