Dark Magic, I presume. What Portrait-mages refer to as a "Jump shot". Or posibly the Gloves came from a cheap source like the Wal-Market and have a low AC.

Probably not from blood loss. Wrist-cutting, unless you cut lengthwise, is rarely deep enough that the blood won't clot in time.
However, due to shitty medical tech during this tiem period, death or loss of limb from infection is still likely.
