This is a remote control "Beltpak" unit, and yes it was stuck. You can see at the end of the video that the crew cut off some of the cars and were putting the rest on to another track to lighten the load. These are terrible units. I work for CN in Regina, Sk, and we have one there. I pulled 27 grain loads out of a track and the Beltpak wouldn't push them back up the hill into the yard. We had to cut half off, put them in another track, push the other half back, then go back to get the rest.
@acdcfan40 what do you expect? its a gp-9 "beltpak" not an sd-40. it doesn't have the weight nor tractive effort required. especialy for a fully loaded 27 car grain consist. its miscalculating for weight

@acdcfan40 Regina!, I did yard training there 3 years ago, when did they finally get a beltpack, when i was there, it was one the last terminals to do everything with enginemen
@re49991 in beltpack remote operation, the locomotive automatically rings the bell before each move, do some research before commenting, it not only makes you look bad but greatly offends the people (including me) who work with these thing every day
@rslaser91 not really, max RPM is only 900, as apposed to 6 or 7000 on a car, but when you got 700 cubic inches (per cylinder) on a 16 cylinder engine, it doesn't need to rev high
A GP9RM with an slug rebuilt from an SW unit very cool...i don't think he's stuck if he was the engine would be reving higher..he might be keeping the slack in the couplers of the cars cause they are on a hill switching..either way its cool to see these units.. a friend of mine is selling 2 of them..great units they are.. i believe they were rebuilt with 645's also....my friend is also selling two M420's and 2 C425M's..great vid
GP9's are what? 16-567C rated at 1750hp? looked like it had about 12, 14 cars there, also with a slug would move that easy,

The yard engines can't push the tonnage up the hill. The beltpack system won't let the engine keep shoving if its loading high amps and not moving. It will get a speedometer fault and set up the brake. As for another engine - when operating in beltpack mode, you can't simply just add another engine on. You have to drop it to manual, do the brake tests and then set it back up into beltpack.
@GEES44DC you can add as many engines as you want without going to manual mode, as long as the controlling locomotive remains in beltpack mode. he simply didn't need to, you are correct however in that the beltpack will apply the brake and give a "locomotive movement failure" message, in the event that the engine revs for 20 seconds without the consist moving
@Graham987654 You sure? I have tried it and it wouldn't release the brakes of the engine we added. We eneded up just cutting out the brakes on the second engine ... was just a transfer move so the engine was just idling anyway.
@Graham987654 It was weird because the unit was set up for trail and everything was connected but the brakes just wouldn't release on it when we set the pack to a speed setting.
@GEES44DC all i can think of is a brake was still on on the control stand in the unit or it just takes a few seconds, setting up the train brake then recovering has worked for me a couple times, other than that I couldn't tell you, don't need to tell you how fussy these things are sometimes though.
doesn't seem very much like its getting stuck. sounds like the GP9 was trying to produce more power for the slug. because it doesn't appear to really be struggling (theres different sounds when an engine is at notch 8, and an engine at notch 8 doing work).

The engine isn't working hard, so something is wrong i'd say. bad connection with the slug perhaps?
If the engine were working hard you'd hear it on the noise this one is just revving.
