nominal GDP is the index used to form groups like the G8 and G20, and the main indicator of economic power used by economist dot com, the World Bank Group, and the IMF. I think it is the only real indicator since it is the only one that uses current exchange rates (which change every day). PPP method (which I think you're using) uses exchange rates that are 10+ years old (which could have changed by a lot over that time).
