Why didn't the Ontario Science Center have stuff like this when I was a kid visiting the place?! I would have rocked the hell out of that thing! When I was there they had a spinning disc with holes in it tucked all the way in the back of the lower hall which had little air guns that were activated by an octave of piano style keys.
@asian3513 Yes, you can buy one from WhiteWater West in British Columbia (for use in waterparks) or from SCS Interactive in the US. Hydraulophones are also manufactured by FUNtain Corporation in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Watching Pachelbel being played on this incredible instrument made me think of something:As a(god-awful)organist myself, the chord progression is usually played on pedals...would it be possible to put some kind of pedal-ish thing on this instrument for bass notes?
@iloverush123 Yes, some hydraulophones have a bass division that can be played by the feet. This consists of a row or arc of ground nozzles that the player steps on. One hydraulophone was built with a foot area (12 large jets operated by the feet of the player) and two fingerboards, one for each hand. See it by searching for the keyword "best gadgetoff" on the website,
I recently visited the science center. Unfortunately, when some of the holes were plugged, no sound was heard. It seemed as if only half of the holes were working.
@xFalloutVids Hydraulophone is patented and patent-pending; web links don't work so well in YouTube but a patent search engine on "hydraulophone" ....
@CREGGYAS Yes, it is open to the public 24 hours a day for anyone to play without having to pay OSC admission, since it is outside the admission pay area.
@Halileet Although I agree with others in the respect that your comment can be construed as funny or clever, I wish to clarify: Raisins get their wrinkled shape through dehydration, whereas prolonged water exposure to our fingers actually causes water to enter our skin via osmosis. The wrinkling of our fingers in this case is actually the result of expansion of the skin caused by the extra water, contrast to the process that drying and dehydration has on grapes -> raisins. ^_^
I wonder if they sell any in the scale your playing?or with the same amount of holes if that makes sense...im more of a piano player but this looks like an awesome twist to it.
@ashmanly It actually makes sense. In any instrument, there's a thing that vibrates and something to determine at what frequency it will vibrate. I believe that in the hydraulophone, the thing vibrating is your finger, and it's not just water coming out. There's air too.
@ashmanly Actually, hydraulophones, including this one, are very real, although somewhat obscure. The one in this video is the biggest hydraulophone in the world, out in front of the Ontario Science Center.
Let's not start blurting out false claims with no reputable source to back us up, hmm?
Well i think these things are great, but I'm not sure why whenever there's new and interesting sounds developed, people always just do something we've been doing for years before on it... Like when the synthesizer was invented, someone stuck piano keys on it, and played it like a keyboard. And when the electric organ was invented, people started to play the same things that they played on a regular organ.
strange myopic comment - so electronic instruments are still confined to keyboards? how about those instruments based on human movement and continuous controllers? there are even drum machines controlled by heartbeats - check out things like the laser controllers and wiimote midi controllers and kinect instruments - we play things based on old techniques cuz it's what we know - then we LEARN and GROW - much like umm EVERYTHING? you must be talking about mainstream instruments.
@kimjongwil I think you've just kind of missed my point. It's an amazing instrument, but it's confined to the western 12 note cycle. I never said that electronic instruments are confined to a keyboard, i merely suggested that there is a tendency to play/produce notes we are familiar with, and to play tunes, erm, for example lets say PACHELBELS CANON. It's got nothing to do with the instrument, and everything to do with how we play it.
I always dream of building an acid house sound machine that uses soap foam to make the bubbling noises like a TB-303. Perhaps it may employ similar mechanisms. Also a kind of punch card or cylinder could be involved to hold repetitive patterns.
Directing thin water jets on a glockenspiel or gongs, a plastic snare drum and such things (of water resistant material) could certainly also be used to make interesting sounds.
Elvispdude says, "This man has the power to make a pryamid if he chooses to! Add electronic magnets, cross-sectioned to excate earth locotation, with logorithmic weight compared to object height: and it will lift with consistancy to the purity of the note!"
Put a magnet on the purity of notes that match the logorithmic weight to the cross-section of latitidude and longitiude(to the secont) with the object: "it will lift in mid-air!"
@MsMusicPrincess It is the main centerpiece out in front of Ontario Science Centre at 770 Don Mills Road, near the intersection of Don Mills and Eglington, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. if you are referring to what i said about these things being around for a long time, simply just google hydraulis. they've been around for quite some time
The hydraulis is simply a water-powered air organ. The hydralis is played by pressing wooden keys, to let air into the air pipes. The water is neither the user interface nor the sound production, but merely a source of power or energy to pump air. A modern church organ is a hydraulis in the sense that the blower is run by hydro ("hydor") electricity, e.g. Niagara Falls turning a water turbine to power the blowing of the air.
Amen ApbnJ27! seriously. it's a musical instrument, and everyone has to argue about whether or not it recycles its water. although, it is pretty entertaining to watch you guys go at it... awesome video!

Think about that.....

i am well aware of the alternative energies. the whole basis of this conversation started because flashcre8or doesnt give a shit about anyone but himself
He has a point. And he isn't being selfish in any way....The world isn't infinite....Yet the whole speed up destruction is absurd considering that all three of our energy usage combined, including the whole lot used by this instrument over decades of usage now and into the future is but a tiny speck in the worlds daily usage, which in turn is a speck in the worlds lifetime usage...But let us enjoy this in our short lives.
The camera's in close to the water jets and a long way from the organ pipes. The sound comes mostly out the ends of the curved pipe and where the organ pipes are.
No... the water is probably run by pump... so the real waste is the energy the pump take up...
but bus waste way more than that pump so why not complain about them rather then this...
(and yes... the only why buses save on our carbon footprint is if every time there make a trip they are filled completely... since this is not happening we are not cutting down on emisions.)
As the main water feature out in front of a landmark architecture site, it runs much less water than any other fountain of a similar building elsewhere in the world.
Hydraulophones are green technology because they use the water for more than just one purpose and also because the water is at the scale of a persons fingers rather than shooting 100 feet in the air like many other similar fountains.

No... the water is probably run by pump... so the real waste is the energy the pump take up...
but bus waste way more than that pump so why not complain about them rather then this...
(and yes... the only why buses save on our carbon footprint is if every time there make a trip they are filled completely... since this is not happening we are not cutting down on emisions.)
