SK is a genius but I have to say the book is only about a million times better than the movie. Even so the movie is still great. The book just happens to be one of the greatest ever written with so much going on terms of ideas and langauge that getting even a fraction of it into a movie is difficult. Humbert is not sound minded nor rational, but it's his ability to make it seem beautiful and good that is amazing. He is dreaming. Lolita is also bathing in her childishness.

The book Lolita is commonly regarded as one of the best books ever, but I have never seen the move so I can't say. Also, I think Lolita was 12 in the book.

Idnuf636: yes, Lolita was 12 in the book (she also turns 13, as the story progresses). I'm guessing that using an actress that exact age, while being true to the story, would have been too controversial at the time. Sue Lyon was 15 when the movie was filmed. That first glance at her in the garden, in a bikini, would be riveting to many heterosexual men, although today it is not politically correct to acknowledge that. And, yes, Nobokov's book is very beautifully written.
