Lockyer is considered to be the best player currently playing Rugby League. Lockyer's 31, in terms of the game, he has a good 3-4 years left in him. Vagana for the Rabbitohs is 34 and still plays Centre. When compared to some players, he's hardly 'old'.
And I like your theory about him not working, considering being Captain of the Broncos since 2005, not to mention 27 games for the Maroons and 36 for Australia, with 20 out of the 36 as captain.
