Hi,my second?? sx1 is has developed the infamous lens error restart camera, is the lens repairable with this method? I did not see you actually repair anything? the first sx also had the same problem but was still under warrenty.Unfortunatly this one is not.
If you haven't gotten your hands on another SX 20 to work on, I just purchased Jonathan Paula's SX 20. Currently the camera suffers from some microphone issues (motley crue blood canon from the Set they played at the sunset music festival.) There was also an annotation in one of his vlogs about there being a lens issue. Though from what i can tell from the video it works just fine. Im not sure exactly what the issue is atm. Do you think it's possible to replace the microphones?
@sonyxploder This part appears to include the front mics as well as the panel. You could look for the mic components individually on the web, but I think they'll be harder to find. The trouble is that if I recall, you'll have to disassemble the whole body to get to that area of the camera. I'm certain it's doable, I just forget how.

@colorbroken I've tried looking for the mic parts online with no luck at all. I've also never opened up a camera in my life. I'd much rather find someone else who is much more capable to do it than I. I tried looking for "CANON SX20 FRONT" on ebay and the search brings up nothing I'm afraid. How much would you charge for a repair like this?
Thank you for this very well made video. I've got the previous model: The Canon S5 IS. The original lens would no longer come out (rocks back and forth then error beeps), a month after a fall... I bought some used spare part lens zoom unit off ebay but after installing it (see youtube v=0cadAjag9KY ) the new second hand lens is now stuck outside. Do you know if those lens are similar? Should I venture myself in trying this out?
@thelonelyfeet@John23gr Absolutely. Are you able to send me a camera so I can shoot the repair process? This video is really more for the mostly-experienced repairman, as opposed to the amateur, since this was a VERY difficult breakdown/rebuild. I could try to do a part 1 to help along... I just need a broken camera!
Congrats on your excellent video, it was very well done, step by step with clear views and the repeated warnings.
Perhaps you can help. Your video starts after the lens was removed. I hope you can do a video, or briefly explain "how to remove the lens" from the Canon SX10is
(Mine started a "Lens Error" and the cost of professional repair is not worth it, so I would like to take a crack at it. I've read and tried non-dissassembly "home repairs" mentioned on the internet with no luck.
Noisy zoom seems to be a very common complaint among other lens related issues like lens error. But for someone not familiar with disassembling this camera a video would be great help. PERHAPS the gears can be lubricated from the outside with out taking the lens apart. In the previous video I saw some channels, perhaps that is where the lens slides, and if you lubricate them the noise stops. But you would know more than me, so please help. Thanks.
@tutubopeter You have to disassemble the entire lens unit to lubricate anything, unfortunately. As per a number of suggestions, I'll try to work out a part 1 in the next few months.
Perhaps, but if you would post a video on how to take the camera apart and thus the lens barrel, one could try to re lubricate the gears if that is possible. Thanks.
Thank you for posting this video. The glass on my lens was nicked (not by me) and I need to replace it. Do you know if that part is available somewhere? If I have to replace the entire sleeve with the meashurements to replace the glass, would I have to take the lens off the body? Please let me know what you think.
@WeiSaiZi Sorry for delay -- yes, you'd have to replace front glass and outer barrel, which means you have to remove everything-- entire disassembly, like the video shows. Sorry for the bad news -- if you don't see any major problems with your image quality, just live with it. Good luck!
just a correction : it's probably not on the sensor, cause point is not always EXACTLY at the same place... probably a difference in zoom level or focus ?
if problem was something on sensor, the blur point will be each time at same place !
@MsFoxterrier I have to take a guess, but try a few things: use the Macro focus very close on something, zoomed all the way wide, and see if it has the same blurry spot. If it appears very clean then it's probably dust or dirt inside the zoom element. If it appears blurry again, it is probably dust or dirt on the focusing element, which is near the sensor in the lens design. You would have to remove the lens from the camera, then check and clean the focus area near the sensor.
@MsFoxterrier .... if it appears clean immediately, then you'll have to disassemble the lens and clean all of the elements. If you're not prepared to try this yourself, take it to a technician or to Canon! Good luck!

@sonyxploder Dang links won't post: search ebay for CANON SX20 FRONT and there should be at least one panel in there someplace.

I have a sx30. The sensor has some very noticeable dust on it. Would this be an easy repair?

Thanks for the video. But it feels like this video is Part 2. Could you film/post the video with how to remove the lens (Part 1)?

Please post a video on how to lubricate a very noisy zoom on the SX10IS. Thanks.

@tutubopeter : No. HA!
If you have a noisy lens, it's probably a gearbox issue. Without knowing why it's screaming, I can't tell you what the trouble is. Sorry!

hello ! Thanks for this very interesting video !
I have a problem with my sx1 : when i take a picture with high zoom, i have a "blur point" in the picture ...
maybye something on the sensor or internal lens ? I have already cleaned external lens, without succes !
Then i'm asking myself if i have to disassemble to clean, or not...
maybye just dissasemble & clean captor first ?
I cannot found any "howto", picture or videos about SX1 disassemble !
Is it hard ? Did you have any advice ?
