This song is amazing. You know why? Because you hear his drunken slurring in the beginning and you immediately think, "how am I supposed to take this seriously?" Think about it. We run into drunks at the bar who ramble on about stuff, and we don't take them seriously because they're drunk. But when you continue listening to this song, you see that beyond the drunkenness, there is a lot of soul and some really awesome stuff being said.
This always makes me think of the 1940's, Little Rascals, Chicago, Dark, smokey Clubs with one light shining on the Piano, a Stoic Rod Dougan playing this song
Even Shane McGowan would get goosebumps and toothchatter listening to this song. Well, maybe not toothchatter, you've gotta have more than one tooth for that, but definitely gooseys.
Great music...amazing words!!! This song is extremely well written, like all of Rob's work...I love the instruments and his powerful emotional voice...He is great, no questions asked!!!
This is a straight homage to Tom Waits, the vocals even sound exactly him! If you like this check out his work, a good place to start is the album 'Night Hawks at the Diner'. The only real difference is the orchestration, Waits accompanied himself on the piano. Tom Waits quote 'Reality is for people who don't have the courage to face drugs.' He was a devoted drunk in the tradition of the great American poet Bob Kaufman.
most artist name i never remenber but rob dougan is one artist i never get bored of. i just wich he would get his new album out already it's being long overdue
the vocal style is VERY Tom Waits-esque, the depressing, emotional, gritty tone he has. Most of the songs where he sings are remeniscent of Tom Waits but this one in particular captures the vocal style perfectly
When i first heard his song, i was wondering 'how da fuck could someone who sings like a retard release an album?"
after i listened for a while, now im like addicted to his music. his voice sounds pretty bad at first, then it went from bad to unique, then from unique to kicking asses.
i dont like his voice on a lot of these songs. I love his actual voice but think it's not the right sound for the music. HOwever, I think the musics genius and I really like it. x
this song breaks my heart but its beautiful. rob dougan amazing. an yes he's deffo had a drink before recording but who can blame him can't be an easy song to sing.
I think he deliberately sung in a manner that made him sound drunk. You can detect a bit of slurring. Dougan seems to always go for a fuller impact than just making a simple song.
I liked this song when I was in a relationship, but now that I'm out, I love this song. It simply captures the essence of feelings that one goes through. I wish I could write and sing this well drunk.
"I'm just a gambler who just wants to lose and be allowed to leave" I know a person that has a pernicious gambling problem and used to say nearly the same thing. She wasn't happy until she lost so she can just go home.
I used to hate this song. Then I started liking that orchestral part at the end at around 3:12. And then I started listening to the whole thing. I realized that this song is just so beautiful and emotional. It's now one of my most played songs.
lmao i love rob dougan just as the next person but the vocals caught me off guard and i laughed...sounded like he was really drunk when he recorded this...love it
