This song is amazing. You know why? Because you hear his drunken slurring in the beginning and you immediately think, "how am I supposed to take this seriously?" Think about it. We run into drunks at the bar who ramble on about stuff, and we don't take them seriously because they're drunk. But when you continue listening to this song, you see that beyond the drunkenness, there is a lot of soul and some really awesome stuff being said.

This is a straight homage to Tom Waits, the vocals even sound exactly him! If you like this check out his work, a good place to start is the album 'Night Hawks at the Diner'. The only real difference is the orchestration, Waits accompanied himself on the piano. Tom Waits quote 'Reality is for people who don't have the courage to face drugs.' the vocal style is VERY Tom Waits-esque, the depressing, emotional, gritty tone he has. Most of the songs where he sings are remeniscent of Tom Waits but this one in particular captures the vocal style perfectly

I think he deliberately sung in a manner that made him sound drunk. You can detect a bit of slurring. Dougan seems to always go for a fuller impact than just making a simple song.
