Watching gypsy jazz videos on youtube has become a passion for me...it's in my blood. I'm fascinated by jazz manouche and its resurgence in recent years...some would say that it is evolving, maturing...and better than ever. So many artists to admire! Debarre, Rosenberg, Birelli, Schmitt, Joscho and the other greats. I'm mesmerized by their creative interpretations and phrasing, the powerful strumming, the lightning fast fingerwork...and we owe it all to the genius of it's one man...Django!
To The Old People: It's called the future, I know you don't understand it. That's OK, but that doesn't mean you have be hateful. Hate looks bad on you.
To The Young People: It's called thepast, I know you don't understand it. That's OK, but that doesn't mean you have be hateful. Hate looks bad on you.
Just enjoy the music. If you don't like the subject of the comments, close your eyes.
One of the great stories regarding his hand and his playing, is that he evidently was a great player before the accident that caused the damage to ring and pinky finger. A friend brought him a guitar while he was recuperating in the hospital, and he developed a new technique. Some people would just give up, become bitter, and sell flowers on the street corner. But he went on to become one the greatest players IN THE WORLD. Now that's something to admire.
@carolmob66 well.... since his accident was indirectly caused by his wife selling plastic flowers in the first place, I imagine he wouldn't have been too keen on that idea :).
@akaast Ever played Bioshock 2? Perhaps the politics are more your flavor. Besides, any video game that includes Django songs must be worth something.
I knew this song and i liked it and i really loved Django. But its still better than I thought. Django, my favourite guitarist, and also the best, i think. Thats with two fingers, folks!
The man in Washington says that your money belongs to the poor; the man in the Vatican, that it belongs to God, the man in Moscow, that it belongs to everybody. However, one need not look far past the statements of these demagogues to realize that the men in Washington, the Vatican, and Moscow are the ones who receive the money in the end.
@mrpiki I just find it unbelievable that he started out with 5 fingers, lost 3 in a fire, and still managed to be an amazing guitarist!!! Even if I had 50 fingers I would still suck. So unfair how talented some people are. I practice my arse off everyday and yet I'll never be this good. But then again nobody will
@Django5198 it's more the desire to make music than any inherent "talent" that makes a great musician. if you try to labour it too much you\ll get right back where you started. but of course you're right that nobody can play like django, he was one of a kind.
@Django5198 thank you for a nice django related comment! It was refreshing to see this in the midst of the debate below us! I know, two fingers indeed! I ask myself whether he would have been any better had he had all his fingers! What do you think?
Please enough! with the video games references. If you kids would grab a guitar or another instrument and do something productive in life,This world would be a better place.
@671kmn The video game everybody is talking about, that is to say Bioshock, is part of the games that rise the video games creation to an art. Different types of art have always influenced each other, with positive effects on the quality of creations in general. You should stop considering that video games are just toys for teenagers. Bioshock is a Master piece, and it is very good that people get to know Django Reinhardt through this video game. Pm me if you want a proper discussion.
@mafiashadow Pm me when you stop playing video games and maybe pickup an instrument and learn it.Maybe we can have a proper discussion about music. You are talking to a musician. Are they paying royalty for the music?I doubt it.Video games just make these kids feel like they are accomplishing something. But, in reality they are just pawns to make money on.This is why this generation is not as creative as generations of the past. They are letting other people think for them.
@671kmn Bioshock is a really good game, I'd even call it a masterpiece. It has more entertainment value than a movie and the same intellectual background as a good book... games don't deserve to be treated as inferior to other arts any more - and playing games is just as unproductive as reading a book.
I think It's great that video game makers know about the magic of this music and use it for their games, bringin it to the younger generation, and maybe get some of them excited about this music
@671kmn screw you dude, I grew up playing video games and I am studying neuroscience, I play 8 different instruments, compose music and paint landscape so stop complaining at people for the rapid change of pace your sorry old ass can't keep up with.
@omicron458a Yeah you do.I hear a lot of lying on the internet all the time. You do all that and have time for video games and instruments.Save your lie for a little kid.Not an adult.Son.
@671kmn Whatever man. At this point I know you're either a kid who derives pleasure from antagonizing people on the internet, or your a bitter old person who is angry at the world. Either way I pity you because you've blinded yourself with prejudice. What I can say is that even if I was lying- which I'm not - you should be careful when assigning blame to a younger generation. If you don't like the way we turned out you only have your own generation to blame, you raised us.
@omicron458a The only one doing the antagonizing is you!If you don,t like my comment.Do not respond! You are just showing how immature you are! That's why I called you out on all the''instruments'' you know how to play.Bitter! No,I have a good life, nice house, beautiful wife,2 kids.Just stop lying on the internet too make yourself look good.If you knew how too play all these instruments and studying whatever it is your studying, you would have no time to argue with me.Now,do not send me no msg's!
The incomparable Stephane Grapelli states the melody with incomparable grace. We were fortunate enough to have seen him perform several times. The last was his 85th birthday concert at Carnegie Hall. Wearing a pair of soft, brown slippers, he seemed to float onto the stage. His feet, and ours, never touched the ground for the rest of the evening.
okay so I just stumbled upon this clicking on related videos starting with some blues. I never get the chance to play Bioshock so if you found on there that's awesome. not very ofter a videogame introduces you to great music.
I'm sorry...I don't care how often people say that smoking is bad for you, but this and many other pictures just wouldn't be the same without the cigarette. Particularly Django, Cash and Dylan
Charles Trenet wrote and sang this song La Mer. Later, Rowan Atkinson also used it in one of his lame movies. ....... nice song. Mr Trenet was interesting because he was a homosexual man in France during Nazi occupation. Thus living in fear of the camps.
thanks mafia for showing me this great musician =). Django and the slightly better storyline made mafia better than mafia 2. I would SO buy a mafia 1 with grafics of mafia 2.
@hybernationstudios apart from in itself it plays a great part even on the movie Le scaphandre et le papillon, beutiful, clever, visually stunning movie, btw :)
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? 'No!' says the man in Washington, 'It belongs to the poor.' 'No!' says the man in the Vatican, 'It belongs to God.' 'No!' says the man in Moscow, 'It belongs to everyone.' I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose... Rapture, a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, Where the great would not be constrained by the small!

@shenvalley25 Swedish 1939 Levin archtop, borrowed from freddie guy of the duke ellington band

@shenvalley25 the guitar in the picture is a Levin, but the guitar used in this recording is a Selmer Maccaferri.

@mikexlong I guess it's a good thing, inspiring younger people to enjoy older music, helping them find new artists.

@mikexlong It's a Bioshock reference. There is a very Ayn Rand esque character named Andrew Ryan that makes objectivist speeches throughout the game.
