A nice long steadicam shot - but does it actually progress the story in a way conventional shooting wouldn't? I don't think so. Therefore: it's worthless. There's only two points of value in this: the discussion tracking down the beach at the start and the killing of the horses; and at the end, the walk along the pier/pan behind the soliders - both of which could have been done without steadicam. The rest is them walking around in circles. LOL.
a movie, named Russian Ark was shooted just in one continous shot, by steadicam! The whole film is only one shot!!!
That movie takes about 1,5 hours... Can you guys imagine that?
How many "re shot" did they need?! ( there are many nice pics in there. 2 times they came out from indor, to outdor, while the whitebalance kept correct! Nice midle Kelvin was found:)
This does nothing for me. If anything it pulls me OUT of the story to think about why there are no cuts in the footage. "ooh, aah", look how good we are, cinematic masturbation.
Technically speaking, you can check also Aleksandr Sokurov's "Russian Ark" ("Russkiy Kovcheg"); the full movie, 99', is filmed in one (unbelievable) single shot :)
Thats insane.... The logistics behind this is insane. Most of this is ADR, Foley and then part grade/ post at the end, but the people management would of been incrediable. I'm thinking the only way this could be done is audio cues (basically shouting cues). Where the hell do you put your remote focus puller???? Unless he/ she is also dressed as a soldier.. Just seriously amazing... this is incrediable..... :o)
That was amazing, great camera work and great directing. Must be hell to direct so many peoply for one take... And there's so much detial in it! Just amazing!
SERIOUSLY!! You're all bitching about a typo of 5.5 meaning 5 mins 30 seconds rather than 5 mins 5 seconds rather than actually discussing how epic this piece of camera work and the scene itself is?? clearly something wrong with you lot.
It's footage like this that makes me want to branch into video work a bit more rather than just photography as it's simply amazing
@Huddiethegreat It's quite simply when you have something in focus and something out of focus, then the thing that was originally in focus goes out of focus and everything else goes into focus. The term 'pulling focus' is used by film makers so they don't have to go into a lengthly explanation with the cameraman about what should be in focus.
That wasn't Digital medium. That was shot in Kodak film negative (Vision2 100T 5212, Vision2 200T 5217, Vision2 500T 5218), ALWAYS (despite budgetary issues) the better choice !!!
Cameras were Panflexes for the sound and an ARRI 435 for high-speed imagery.
There was a focus puller. I've checked. The D.P. was Seamus McGarvey, the steady cam operator was Peter Robertson and the focus puller of this unit was a Moçambican called Carlos de Carvalho.
To be honest i was a bit shocked by that too but i imagine the reality was that once they leave the beach, they would have had no more need for the horses and would have just left them there in which case they would have likely starved to death which is obviously a much more prolonged and painful death then being shot dead. I suppose it does seem kind of evil, but it's more humane then suffering to death..... But that's just my opinion
@Xenon2k The British retreated to England from Dunkirk, leaving behind most of their equipment. So that the Germans couldn't use any of it, as much as possible was destroyed - hence why you can see vehicles being disabled and horses being shot.
i saw hanna yesterday, and joe wright did a fantastic steadicam shot again! (this one's still the best though.) he's now totally one of my fave directors.
In the beginning of the shot I thought "the actors walk on the sand, but the steadicam op walks over 4x8s plywood". Then I started counting "that's 1 sheet of plywood, that's 2 sheets of plywood...that's 3...5...21..38..hmmm..not...there is no plywood.
Apparently according to IMDB it was due to be shot in two days this sequence, but the lighting on the beach wasn't right so it got changed into a single camera take
Apparently the Steadicam guy collapsed during the final take, he didn't complete it
How do you even walk so quickly and that frickin far, over terrain like that carrying so much weight? let alone actually controlling a fiddly aparatus with pinpoint accuracy...
Holy Venezuela this shots amazing

So, there has been a focus puller indeed.

But is a great shot, no doubt...
ofotopedro 4 months ago
Sorry, but I don't believe in a serious film the operator (specially in a Steady Cam) pulling focus. There must be a focus puller besides him.
Otherwise, can't be serious...
