I understand that for the price you can't expect much of the quality, performance or space but a brand new car that has it's wheels out of alignment and a driver's seat that doesn't stay in it's place are just dangerous.

Awesome. It seems like they could have made sure the news crew got a good Yugo. This was seemed to be eighty percent done. It had fit and finish problems expected but the alignment and motor were like a Usedgo.

Whoever says yugo is bad should compare it to other brilliant cars amercians never got a chance to drive. The obvious choice would be a Trabant 601, Wartburg Knight, Zaporozec 968 and so on, cars americans never got a chance to drive.
As an owner of a 1989 yugo I can say all things said in this review are correct, it does have problems with cold starts, small boot and noisy cabin, but I can forgive that because it is cheap to buy, repair and drive.

You can't make a car like the Yugo 45 and expect it to be even remotely competitive against that kind of competition.
I was in the midst of gowing up when the YUGO was sold in USA, or North America. I will never forget how Consumer Reports and other companies rated it! One would say that the YUGO received an "F" rating! But then, this is just basic transportation. In any case, this was one of the vehicles that people "loved to hate"!

Have a hard time believing a 1.1 liter getting only 26 MPG. Were they racing gears and making constant stops? My 92 VW GTI 16v with a 2 liter and mods gets about the same if I drive mostly highway but still mixed with city. Makes little sense.
@djkenny It was an old 1.1 with old Fiat engineering behind it with Yugoslavian specs. Plus it had a carburateur, not fuel injected. The poor gas mileage is justified in that aspect because it prodced very little power, meaning you had to always rev the engine to get to the speed you wanted.
Well, it's shit, but the whole Balkan drives it for 30 years, and will probably do the same in the next 30 years to come... And don't worry, no one has never DIED because of its seat problems, and loud engine... At least, you can buy parts for it everywhere!
Also, if you know the least about mechanics, you should be able to fix it yourself, and with a new car, when the electronics fail, you can look at it and cry... Doesn't require special gas... Almost goes whit out it's engine... Miracle car

Because there was such a shortage of technical knowhow at the time in that part of the world, cars HAD to be made so simplistic that anyone could fix it. In the US, that's not much of an issue. Mechanics with technical experience are easy to find and fairly inexpensive due to competition in the area.

(war) there's plenty of them still on the road today.

This was a third world car in a first world nation. There's the Beetle and the Fiat 500 to name a few, and then there is the Yugo. Apocalyptically crap, but what did you really expect? Even the name of the company was at the end of the alphabet!
It really shouldn't have been sold here until all the kinks were worked out.
Did you know that this same Yugo (with bigger bumpers and few more plastic parts changed) was being produced till few months ago!!! That ended in November 2008. I hate this car (if you can call it a car). I am from Serbia (Yugo's home) and I got my driving license by taking driving lessons on this car and by taking driving test on this car. So it was the first car I have ever driven. After that, any car (even those 20 years old) feels like driving a spaceship! :)

Did you know that this same Yugo (with bigger bumpers and few more plastic parts changed) was being produced till few months ago!!! That ended in November 2008. I hate this car (if you can call it a car). I am from Serbia (Yugo's home) and I got my driving license by taking driving lessons on this car and by taking driving test on this car. So it was the first car I have ever driven. After that, any car (even those 20 years old) feels like driving a spaceship! :)
