A soft opening is usually an unofficial opening where they let guests see what they've done so far. Depending on the majority reaction, it sometimes dictates weather they need to make changes or not, or make the opening sooner or later.
I know Disney has soft openings for a lot of their attractions.
i go tor universal like once a week, it still hasn't had even a soft opening just yet.... they still haven't announced when anything regarding the wizarding world of harry potter is to open.....

It's opening in December 2009 for the soft opening and the main grand opening is in early januraury 2010.
