You are right. This was my first acquaintance with Perlemuter! My grandmother had this LP and I think even today, it has one of the best recordings of the Ballade Op 38 and Tarantelle that exist.
This is really marvelous playing, sane and balanced. Mr. Perlemuter refuses to accentuate the bombast. It's nice to hear this scherzo played in such a way as to bring out the wit as well as the passion. Very lovely, and in the best possible sense, a simple rendering of this great work.
*Note from Otterhouse* For all viewers; In the Netherlands, the "Alternative" classical and Jazz radio/internet channel Concertzender is threatened. I did an internship there (balancing engineer), and love their inventive programming- and use of internet. Now the Dutch public radio wants to pull the plug from the CZ because... the channel is too popular!! Please read the full story at my channel home "otterhouse", and send an e-mail to mening(at]concertzender(dot]nl for support. Thanks! Rolf
What a Fantasic Pianist! i never heard about him before but i went to a cd store today to buy some ravel piano music and had a choice between at least 8 interprets. i listened to all just with one piece. and of course i bought his cd. it is so natural and beautiful. now i try to find everything he played and hanging on youtube...
I was lucky to study Chopin Ballade no. 1 with him and all I can say is Cortot had some amazing ideas and arrangements. that made the most obvious sense. Im the coda apparently Cortot wrote Exhaulatation in french on his music with an excamation mark. perlemuter wrote it in mine too in pen.
don t be jealous the first masterclass he destroyed me infront of many people. but it was the best lesson ever. a lesson in singing. the next time he saw me a year later he must have remembered or been genuinely pleased with my ballade. as he said it was like him when he was young. I think he mean t full of youthful abandon. and though mine had more wrong notes. Seriously he was a scary teacher because he either hated your playing or loved it.
Yes, I have this LP too. Sadly underrated musician, although he has a cult following (like all underrated artists). His Ravel is indeed pretty special (even in the late recordings you mention, when his technique had started to desert him a bit). He was unfortunate in belonging to a generation of piano greats (Horowitz, Arrau, Kempff, Serkin, Haskil, Askenase, Cherkassky and the somewhat younger Richter and Gilels). Probably why he never got signed by a big company. Studied with Cortot.
Thank you for posting this gem and the comprehensive explanation provided. A remarkable pianist with a very distinct sound. I also love his rendition of the 24 Chopin preludes. And his comment: "un peu bouillabaisse" must have been spot on, I can almost hear him say it.
