What? As someone looking for how to do a spin, this didn't tell me anything other than do a bunch of backwards crossovers! Why are you doing backward crossovers when you're looking to do a spin?
@DavidSkis You do them to build up momentum for the spin itself. The hard part (at least for me) is stepping out of those backward crossovers into the spin. I'm only doing two foot spins right now, but hope to move onto one foot spins soon.
@jfluter Oh, I see. So he builds the momentum, then exits the backwards crossover. I'm not seeing why he can't just forward skate into one though? (I'm a bit frightened to do it)
Is there an intermediate move you could learn between a backwards crossover and a spin?
@DavidSkis Not that I know of. You can start off with just doing a two foot spin. You can start with your feet parallel, about shoulder length apart. If you spin clockwise, then you have more of your weight on your right foot as you do a 1/2 pump type of motion with the left, so that foot ends up on an inside edge. Your right arm is in front of you, with the elbow bent (think of creating a J shape), and is swung out as you start the spin to give the spin some momentum.
@DavidSkis (continuned). If you are a counter-clockwise skater, you will use the right foot to pump off of, and your left arm in front. When spinning a two foot spin, your feet should be close to together with your arms crossed and body straight. You feet will be slightly staggered, so that one is is slightly in front of the other. If you spin clockwise, the left foot should be in front, and vice versa for counter-clockwise. The weight on that foot should be towards the heel.
@DavidSkis (continued), and the weight of the foot that is behind should be towards the ball of the foot, but not so much that it's on the toe pick. Finding the "sweet spot" will be the challenge here, and the only way to really find is to practice. Take it easy when first learning the spins as you may get very dizzy, which my coach says is completely normal. I've been told that it takes time to get use to spinning, so give yourself a break here and there.
@DavidSkis Once you have mastered a two foot spin from stand still, you can work on starting it from the crossovers, and eventually, onto one foot spins. As for starting from going forward, my best guess is that you won't have much momentum with starting the spin from going forward, making it harder to utilize the inside edge, which occurs when you step out of the cross over.
falling is a part of learning if you fear falling then you are more likely to fall because you are not concerntrated on the balance needed to properly accomplish what you'd like to.
first off, people who are JUST getting on the ice should NOT be trying this. seriously, if you can barely skate properly, then don't try any kind of spins.
why does he make it look so easy?
