THE EAGLE has landed. THE CHURCH @ [sleepy-[H]allow-wed] Philadelphia has RISEN and the Central (GENTILE) bank has been set free. ALLAH'S 'CRAZY DIAMONDS' are in THE BLUE OYSTER. (A-DYNA-MO)
It's extremely hard to pick, but this is definitelly one of my VERY favorite Patti Smith songs. When I saw her do it two years ago, I was amazed at how much it was like the record- in a GOOD way! I didn't miss a moment of the recorded version, but it was even more electrifying! It practically blew the top of my head off.....Patti was, is, and will always be amazing!
Smith worked exclusively with men and was married fifteen years until the death of her husband. I don't think she can be categorized as presenting a message of 'fuck men', unless of course you meant that literally, in which case absolutely.
I know of one star, it's Patti Smith, who has this beautiful voice, more like whiskey voice, like an angel and she gives this power. And that power goes to you.
@tonyhoward07 Rimbaud actually. Curious to know why Rambo is being said. I thought old people would be better educated and more polite... but I suppose the internet is the pussies' labyrinth.
Like much of Patti Smith's work this song is highly poetic, and contains lots of vivid and exotic imagery which reminds me of the Symbolists such as Rimbaud, that she was so heavily inspired by. However, this song is a particular favorite of mine ( and bare in mind I am a huge fan of the bulk of Patti's work) on account of the primal, almost shamanistic quality of the melody and lyrics; which I suppose also owes tribute the mid 19th century Symbolists.
I've just got into Patti's music, and she is amazing! Her vocals are admirable and her emotions show really strong in the songs she sings. (On a side note, I love her hair is the first picture on this video!)
This song is a surprising highlight of the 1970s, with the outstanding feature being Jay Dee Daugherty's drumming. I have wondered for a very long time why rock magazines never make lists of the "best drum songs", for this would certainly be among the top fifty I feel.
Yeah, when I was in college in the '80s I thought this song was a time-warp transmission from Mars by way of the Roman Empire by way of ancient Egypt by way of Easter Island. Primitive and spooky, yet dripping with sex.
Superb song, with a killer presentation of images. Patti Smith actually whirled herself off a concert stage in Florida singing this song in the mid-70's! Landing in the orchestra pit, she broke a couple of bones in her neck. Can you imagine? "And I whirl, and I whil...like a dervish!". Her excrutiating recovery lead her down the path that brought her next great album: "Easter". The lp this selection came from, "Radio Ethiopia", is at last receiving it's due, as a diamond in her powerful cannon.
That song was part of the "soundtrack" during my "junkee-years"(1980-1994). I don't need any kind of drugs anymore, but I still love this song! Keep on rocking Patti!
beautiful. i love radio ethiopia. such a great album. patti smith is the best. i am so glad she is still performing and making music. saw her live more than anyone else. this song rules. wish i could see her in nyc on new years eve. thanks for this great vid and amazing song. there is noone else like patti.
I am a Patti Smith fan, but I had never really listened to this song before. I mean really listened to it. So then I did a few hours ago and I've been listening to it constantly since. I just can't get over it.
i love this song, it is about my home town, Vineland, NJ. there are still people going to vineland to get "white stuff," ain't it strange!Love the pics!
I saw Patti last weekend, and when they started this song I practically elevated out of my seat! I hadn't seen her do it since her first concerts in LA in the 70's. Wonderfully hypnotic and intense, and they did it remarkably close to the recorded version. I am still floating thinking of it.... :)
Wow! What a beautiful sexy woman.. sooo much femininity flowing. She is so clever and talented, great singer and songwriter.. a real diva. Definitly a woman to aspire to, I'd love to meet her. I LOVE the video... the pics are just what I love and need. Songs and paintings from the cosmos... there are no words to describe how beautiful this video is. Thank you sooo much for posting... I love all of your videos. Much love and peace to you. Patricia.x
I totally agree. This always stood out for me among Patti's songs. It has an edge that cuts to the quick. No-one else has ever sung a song of this kind with that degree of intensity and passion. You can see how her own admiration of Callas and Jagger is reflected here perfectly. It is the greatest rock and roll song ever written, no doubt about that.
This song was the 1st one I heard by Patti, and I was so amazed. I had never heard anything like it... It's so scary and spellbinding./Karin Christensen

I always have viewed Patti Smith as an actor rather than as an artist: she was playing a part, not having the courage of her convictions.
But if so, she's as good as anyone I knew at that sport.
