  • when this prop h8 case comes to a end, you can color all those states pink , it going to be a great day in america

  • @sunshine79768 -- i can't hardly wait. I have pink highlighters on standby.

  • I'm doing a whole project on this, kind of a mini extended essay, for my 10th grade English class. It's really terrible that they're such idiots. I hope it'll happen someday.

  • Yeah I learned not to use Permanent Markers on same-sex marriage maps of the USA. I'm getting tired of this state-by-state game. I rather watch sports where people win or loose games, instead of basic civil rights. Same-sex marriage needs to be recognized nationwide NOW. We have much more serious stuff to deal with like the recession and the never ending war on that country we invaded for apparently no reason.

  • I have to confess, I get so upset when we the votoers of the country and states vote to keep marriage between a certain type of couple, one man and one woman, others who disagree say our vote does not count, and keep trying over and over to get the courts to rule otherwise. It's annoying. We had elections, more than once, which once should have been enough, the people have spoken. this is not about protecting minority, its about the peoples voice. they have spoken. Respect that.

  • just because same-sex marriage would be legal does not mean any religion or chruch/chapel/cinagogue, what have you, would be compelled to perform a same-sex marriage, or celebrate one. it is EVERY PERSON in america's right to have equality such as is stated on your declaration of independance. if you cannot grant that right, then you deny it, and with it you deny your own people's freedom.

    Repect THAT.

BTW i didn't get to vote, im 16 and canadian. but even i know right from wrong.

  • and im not liberal, im more of an NDP kinda person.

  • why can't homos take NO for answer why must we be the one to relinquish our values to make gays gayer? create a new term for 2 dudes get hitched say like "farried" or "gayriage" this way we know what it is ....we have words that describes things specifically.. Oh and please don't write me about the less rights dead worn out lie.. ok..

    God Bless

  • homophobe

  • Yay Maine. Too bad we're the most liberal state ever to the point that we have a peoples veto. And all of the random ghetto bigots who hate everyone for no reason can camp outside of shaws and get signatures against something that has nothing to do with them,,,:-( It's okay though. I don't need a piece of paper to tell me my wife is my wife.

  • I love you two. <3

Now I want to do this with a map! ^.^

  • I"m not going to pretend that its not been tough for me and my family accepting my sisters lifestyle. My father is a retired pastor and I'm the principal of a Private Christian School. If people were to ever find out about my sister; I would probably be fired. But I'm pretty open about it and if people ask, I'm not going to lie to them. I'm a Christian and Jesus said the number one commandment is Love. Nowhere did he ever say "Hate" anyone. Its been a learning curve for me; thats for sure

  • hate the sin NOT the sinner...

straights don't hate homos like they do straight people for their opinion! get it straight will you.

Will we permit bestiality if not why not? where does it stop You are a priciple of a Catholic school?? My God man have you read the Bible?

Did u read the book of revelation ? Daniel? But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be, ... what do you think that means? unemployment? TV ?

    God Bless

  • 'hate the sin not the sinner'? the first word in that sentence is HATE. it is hate that brings war, that brings violence and suffering. you can preach hate all you like, but any good hearted person will know, you should never build a country upon hate.

  • OMG really I thought is was an illustration on how the left and right view things and act upon them . We look at the merits or lack there of and criticize the points. You libs criticize the person with vulgarity and disgusting faul language and totally leave any merit out. If you could think past the quote you would realize that it precludes violence against the person.. by only redressing the point of view. Man! you guys claim to be so smart The more I'm on here,I realize that is your delusion

  • I'm a straight conservative and even I'm amazed at how people will not use the "N" word as its to offensive; but they will throw around worlds like "Gay" "Fag" or "Dykes" like the idiot below. One is no worse than the other

  • if you must use vulgar, offensive language, at least check your spelling. we're less inclined to dismiss your opinion immediately if we think you have a brain. it's dykes.

  • Is a "Civil Union" the same as marriage in the gay/lesbian community? Or is their a legal/personal difference?

  • Good question. The confusion surrounding civil unions is exactly why they're inadequate, unequal alternatives to the universally understood concept of 'marriage'. Civil unions are not the same as marriage and it's not simply semantics. Same-sex couples have been denied services in hospitals, funeral homes, state agencies and courts because the concept of civil union is confusing and unclear. Additionally, couplesincur financial disadvantages because they're unable to say simply -- we're married.

  • Civil unions are misunderstood by the general public, as well as by individuals working at institutions who are in the positions of authority to enforce the law.

It is unfair that loving, committed, 'civil unioned' (what?) couples should face the additional hardship in trying to articulate their nebulous status because they are denied access to the word marriage.

'Married' is really the ONLY universally-understood legal status for two people committed to sharing a life together.

  • Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. My sister is gay and I've heard her discuss this in the past; which is really hard in our family as we're a very conservative far right family(FAR RIGHT). I'm trying to understand her position as I love her and her partner very much. Whats most important to me is my sisters happiness; so I'm doing my best to understand her position.

  • i really respect the fact that you're trying to educate yourself out of love and compassion for your sister. family dynamics sure make this whole discussion interesting -- believe me, I can identify with the position your sister is in. Whether or not she has told you, there's no way we can even begin to articulate how much it means to have our families make an effort to understand us. everyone is ultimately entitled to their opinion but a little effort from the ones we love goes such a long way.

  • Boy, what is up with all these haters commenting??

Anyway, while disappointed in the decision yesterday, I was not at all surprised. But I am happy that those who were lucky enough to get married are able to stay married. I do believe it will be legalized in our lifetime, it just sucks that it hasn't happened yet.

Love your vids, Mary and Jess : )

  • Easy, now. Don't get crazy. The way that you're loving a legal proposition really threatens the traditional and values of one man and one woman. Watch it. The world might come crashing down around you.

  • I suggest you guys sleep a thousand years and then wake up only to find out Gay Marriage Ban is still IN EFFECT!

  • This is the 21st century. It's kind of ridiculous that not all states allow gay marriage.

This is not a a religous matter at all. It's about rights. And EVERY American deserves equal rights.

  • Such an intelligible and eloquent argument from the other side. Wow, thanks for that scintillating defense of Prop 8. I almost can't believe I still disagree.

  • I personally see this as a civil rights victory. The people that voted for the ban againts same sex marriage have the right to have thier rights upheld. Regardless of your opinion on gay rights; the law upheld the will of the people, something that very rarely happens anymore. I'm neither for or againts prop 8 and gay marriage; but I am pro people voting. They voted, now let it stand until another vote comes along.

  • I agree, in so much as, there is a reason why the members of the Supreme Court are appointed to research and rule on important issues. If people were capable of making objective and well educated decisions, then a public vote should be lauded -- you're right. Unfortunately, the beauty of America is that we'll let anybody in the voting booth. It's enough to think they'll always elect competent officials. It's another to believe the majority will always do what's right for the entire community.

  • I see your point and here is mine: My governments choices in the last 50yrs or so have been very hit and miss. I trust the "Uneducated" American voter more than I do the federal government when it comes to deciding my fate. If you look at the Federal Governemts track record next to the American Vote; I'm going with the American voter to decide what is right for his/her state, district. Doing whats right for the minority; is not always whats best for the Majority either. Just my opinion

  • Yeah people in MA are total A-holes, no one can even spell their pretentious little state. P.S. Where's Iowa? That's not even a state!

  • A minor setback, but we got something out of it.

Same-sex marriages BEFORE the ban will stand.

    A minor setback...We'll get around it. ^__^

  • it takes all kinds. even people like carnaco2 who believes my love is foolish. OK. that's your right. if you want to live your life belittling your brothers and sisters, casting stones at what you think is 'foolish'- go for it.

Civil rights of citizens ARE MOST CERTAINLY being violated. If you want to judge those citizens (who some might call 'the least of God's people'. Sound familiar?) Go ahead. I didnt think judgement was in the human being job description...We seem divinely unqualified.

  • That's the spirit. We're as motivated as ever. Today's news is merely a flesh wound!

  • It should be all colored. :(

  • we have our big, fat, mega marker just waiting for the day to furiously let loose on the map from coast to coast. I don't care if my great grankiddos do it, we'll get there!

  • that's why i love that i live in canada,

if i could have california weather and the beautiful people of canada together it would be a perfect world.

  • How is California NOT one of the first states with a marriage equality law?? Seriously......Can someone answer me that?

  • Totally doesn't make sense, right? I moved from Connecticut to California four years ago thinking The Golden State was the place to live and easy, breezy life of love. Funny how life works. Well, we learn not to make assumptions or take anything for granted, anyway. And away we go, onward and upward and forward towards a better tomorrow.

  • our friend carnaco2, again takes the mature and noble approach of faceless, anonymous judgment of another human being.

but he makes a good point, "traditional, normal marriage relationships" are really thriving these days. Healthy. Faithful. Long-lasting. That's the first thing that comes to my mind about marriage. Divorce rates, shotguns, domestic abuse, infidelity-- all just toxic byproducts of those gays. Get them away from normal straight relationships and all would be right in the world.

  • Mary - I'm sorry California wound up being so lame. I never expected it either :/

And Carnaco2, don't get too comfortable in your fake, plastic Religious morality...patting yourself on the back thinking you've saved the children from Satan's immoral influence, this isn't going to last long. Enjoy it while you can.

  • Maybe if we were actually talking about Justice you'd be right, but this is bigotry....and Id even argue a violation of the separation of church and state based on where the money for Prop 8 came from.

But you are half right Justice WAS served today, all the marriages that were performed before Prop 8 are still valid, sorry.

  • one step back, 18,000 steps forward. amen to that I say, s8ntmark!

  • What....and deny them the chance of reminding the Religious Right each and every day that despite their best efforts Gay Marriage still exists LEGALLY in California...and there isn't a damn thing "God" can do about it? Nah...

  • look at the bigotry that went out from the Gay community towards Ms.California. Where did her right to her opinion go? Where was all the "1st Amendment" Speeches from the left? The liberal left tore her to pieces; because of her having an opinion that was her own, based on her own beliefs. I can't go into Curves; does that mean they hate men? Are they bigots?

  • Ms. California had every right to say what she did, but her responders had every right to their opinions also.

If Curves is a gay bar, I don't know what to tell you, Ive never had a problem going into lesbian bars with my friends. Ill tell you this, though, if they hate you for no reason other than you are straight, yes they are bigots.

PS. I'm really not interested in turning Mary's post into a "gay is a choice/Prop 8/Religion Sucks hard" debate which I think is happening.

  • I agree they do have the right to their opinion; but to label someone a bigot, or a homophobe because of what they believe in? I cant agree with that. Curves being the all female healthclub; its not a bar. Sorry about the mis communication on that. People love free speech; when its thier free speech. They love the election process, when its their candidate that gets elected. They love the Judicial system when it works in their favor. I'm pro-gay rights but I'm also pro-election process.

  • you should check out the system we have up here in canada.

quote: "it is illegal to publicly incite hatred against people based on their colour, race, religion, ethnic origin, and sexual orientation, except where the statements made are true or are made in good faith."

keeps thing clean and fair. but people still get freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication.

  • Ah yes, "reprogrammin' da queers"....That worked AWESOMELY for Ted Haggard.

  • Didn't the supreme court say a few months ago that they didnt feel Prop 8 was unconstituional? I hope this isnt a harbinger of things to come...but all isnt lost.

Regardless of the decision on Tuesday, everyone that is already married STAYS married!

AND even If Prop 8 is upheld, we just need to get a new prop on the ballot that overturns it...all is, most definitely, NOT lost.

  • Welll ...

In addition to answering the legalities of Prop 8, the seven-member Supreme Court is ALSO expected to address the legal status of those 18,000 same-sex couples who were married in California between June — when the legalization took effect — and Election Day in November when Prop 8 took effect. You're right in that Attorney General Jerry Brown said he believed those same-sex marriages would be legal regardless of Tuesday's ruling, but we all still wait for OFFICIAL word.

  • Of course, and I hope I didn't come off as angry or yell-y.....(I just re-read my comment and whats with all the exclamation points?! ;)

I just tend to get passionate about the actions of a group of people who try and decide the rights of others based on their backwards and out of date belief system....

ie I hate it when Christians try and tell everyone their rights because they believe that's what Sky Daddy wants. :P

  • I hope I live to see the day where that whole map is pink. :)
