  • He actually covered House and Dubstep beat patterns in this as well as Hip-Hop.

  • Cheers Penski....much appreciated fella...enjoyed your relaxed style of teaching !

  • Section by The Roots seems to have benefited from this foundation. That Philly Bounce is so evident.

  • Thats so cool!! I have just watched your vid and think its excellent!! It has really helped me have a better understanding, so thanks for sharing :) I have added a video response called 'TAMA Jam' of me playing a variation of swing beat at the recent London Drum Show. Hope you like it ;) My name is Josiah and I am 10 yrs old, self taught from the age of 3!! Did you play from a young age??

  • @scollett67 Hey Josiah! Watched your video a couple times. Good stuff, dude! :) You got good hands, there! Keep it up. I actually started late. I started playing when I was 17. But spent as much spare time as a could practicing and playing the drums, especially during the first four years. I'd practice sometimes 4 or 5 hours at a time! I was a bit of a nut back then :) Keep in touch and hit me up if you have any questions! You can always contact me through my website. Peace out!

  • holy crap what is that snare you are playing on. i would pay a lot of money for that

  • @base8a11player861 That's a 12"x7" Mapex Black Panther, man. Schmokin'.

  • dope...

  • Coolest.Guy.Out

  • how do you make your snare sound like that?

  • @willyfulable Hey man. 2 ply head. Tune it right up (without choking it). Slap one MoonGel on that sucka. Boom.

  • great.

  • You remind me of Steve Jordan sound and feel!!! Nice work!!!

  • the philly bounce had me grooving to "superstition" in my head. very cool

  • GREAT explanation of something often misunderstood. Thanks!!

  • What a pleasure to meet someone who knows what hip-hop is. Forget all this nonsense about earning money and killing people. . . real hip-hop is a celebration. And for a celebration, you gotta be able to dance to a swung groove!

  • nice stuff man! really nice

  • Just beautiful :-)

  • I remember being told at college that you cant teach feel. Wish I could show them this video now! Just puts it in a nutshell with the 'keeping the swing in your head' bit!

  • Amazing work ! Stuff like this can really improve me as a drummer! Thanks!

  • Young drummers. This is how you approach the kit.

  • great video man .... great feel ... have you seen marcus baylor`s video on how the swing pattern has influenced his straight 8th / hip hop playing ...its very similar to your thing here

  • Nice stuff...sounds great!

  • Sweet. Lotsa cats on the Tube play amazing stuff but can’t - - or won’t- - break it all the way down s-l-o-w-a-n-d-n-i-c-e-a-n-d-e-z. Thanks, bro’!

  • WOW WHAT is that Snare?!?! And those wood rims!!! ?

  • thank you for the knowledge I joined your mailing list because of this video and subbed

  • wow . he's a ventroquist too, he speaks, his lips dont move. makes me laugh how these kids are going for it, blastin the hell out of their drum kits and this guy in a few seconds with barely a move, puts them in their place

  • philly bounce is so dope

  • thanks man helped me a lot in producing :)

  • DOPE!!!

  • What Evans snare head is he using?

  • Would you say that most modern hip hop has strayed away a bit from it's roots in jazz in that most rhythms are not played with the I "swing" feel as you are playing? Mosthip hop in the 80's and early 90's was played the way you are, but I feel like today it is mostly played with a straight feel rather than a swing feel, do you agree?

  • @ThePrutrude Wow. Man, it would take me all day to answer that question, but yea. I agree with you. Especially that first point of yours. But although rap in general since the 80s as rocked both a triplet swing AND and 16th feel, like Africa Bambaata, Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow, etc, I think 'Hip Hop' as a feel was pretty much defined by that jazz triplet. Ask ANY drummer (than can) to play a hip hop groove for you - and they'll just instinctively put a swing on it.

  • I agree in a way, but don't get the impression it's no out there, there is great hip hop you gotta find it.

  • what do u mean by kick in 1 and 3? I'm trying to understand what hip hop rythym is

  • nice video Mr. Brown!!! this sums up what i been planning to teach my first student. i started her on straight 8th note rock beats but i could tell i would need to teach her how to shuffle/swing before she could understand the feel of a bouncy hip hop beat. you really broke down the relation of the two. well done, that was really interesting

  • i love the philly bounce! great playing man

  • Don't know how I didn't find these before. Outstanding, good sir! Hope to see more!

  • dude thanks for putting up these videos they are really helpful

  • rob first ur a grate drumer keep it up! and ur vid are rly good i love them btw.... what kind of drum set and ride because it sounds rly good keep up the good work rob ur the man!!

  • you gotta try playing flex, by victor wooten

  • reminds me a lot of what jeff porcaro used to do ... like on the Toto song Pamela for example .... almost an " i wish " stevie wonder sort of groove

  • dude you are a master...i thank you for this insanely clear instruction...you better be either playing or teaching professionally:)

  • Listen to Cissy Strut by the Meters. Pure hiphop. Too bad nowdays hiphop has lost that swing because you can add it by a switch in fruity loops

  • Actually the music itself was derived from funk/disco/soul in the late 70s and early 80s, but that jazz swing was extremely evident in the 90s. This sounds like ?uestlove's style, ironically he's from Philadelphia.

  • Thanks it's tasteful , More video plz :)))

  • RAD!!!

  • Wow! You are the man! I could understand and retain everything you said, and you used history to help that's my type of learning! You Go Boy! Ciao!

    O.N.E.

    LuvLuv

  • you good man...not only as a drummer!!!...but as an instructor too!!!....and goo dude too sharing all your knowledge here on you tube... THANKS A MILLION MAN!!!

  • @teamsleepnine You're very welcome, man. Pace! :)

  • yeah buddy. haha. yes, thanks man, this is what ive been discovering lately. i really started getting into hip hop all year, and now im really diggin jazz all of a sudden for some reason. this helped it all make sense. time to hit the practice room.

  • damn 0:56 was nasty to the end. i could groove to shit like this unlike other people who just bang the drums instead of playing them.

  • The transition was nice. You got it cat daddy. Solid.

  • Damn that sounds nice

  • never thought of it like that. Taking that to the kit for sure.

  • brother, elegance in simplicity, loving how you break it down, I'm chillin back here grooving to the beat on my bass.

  • 2 stars

  • Where is your website? I gotta come check one of your clinics!

  • Great video, no ridiculous...you-tube B.S., just a whole lot of down to Earth delivery, and fantastic explanation. I like the swing-->hip-hop transition. Learning to swing is key when developing that meaty feel necessary to get people moving.

  • MUY BUENO ME SIRVIO MUCHO

  • sweet video. that was really interesting

  • Can you explain to me where the one is on that bebop beat you were playing at the very beginning? Are you hitting the 2 and 4 with the hi-hat? that's what it seems like but this clavinova in a practice room here at school has it opposite on the drum function it has...says it would be either hitting on the 1 and 3 or just the 1, depending on the subdivision I guess. Would be nice to figure this out finally haha. Thanks!

  • it's great to see people going from jazz to any style of music so naturally.

  • great way to explain hip-hop feels,, Rob ur the man !

  • man straight digginn... fillybounce best describes... who dont know that? yo bro, keep goin... share natural its nature.

  • what skin you got on that snare drum

  • Perfect explanation. I love the wood hoops by the way.

  • You play beautifully.

  • Awesome...very nicely explained. Great playing too man.

  • dam that was tight! :D can really hear that bounce!! oh and beautiful wood rims, i wanted to hear the sound :(

  • very nice vinteo

  • 5 stars

  • Simple but groovy, mature, tasteful, understated...

    EXCELLENT

  • Thanks, man :)

  • This is one of the very best drum video's I have ever seen. You explain and play it beautifully.

  • nice pocket . . there's nothing better than a stripped down beat

  • This is just awesome. I learned more today. Thanks!

  • wow never even thought about it that way

  • I love your snare :) great video by the way!

  • Nice easy explanation. Nicely done!

  • dude you're tight, please teach me.

  • this is really interesting, you're obviously very well experienced

  • perfect explanation. lovin' the maturity in the groove by not letting yourself deviate from the pattern. awesome!

  • mmm... i love these jass things.

  • its spelt "jazz" my friend

  • no no is spelt "jass".. i gots jass in my ass

  • very nice

  • it was a joy to hear this and learn this! so much thanks!

  • philly bounce kinda makes sense kinda sounds like questlove

  • What an incredibly articulate explaination. The way Rob transitions to the the Philly Bounce and the way he drops to the straight 8th hip hop from the swing at 2:50 is a thing few can demonstrate effectively. "Keep the swing going in your head." One of THE best lessons I've seen on YouTube. Exceptional playing and instruction, Rob. Thank you.

  • @BillyAtwell

    I agree 100% -- Thanks much Rob!

  • @BillyAtwell, You said everything i was about to say but better XD

  • Hey man. I'm a rock guitar player and I found this video to be hugely inspiring! Awesome work on explaing this and your playing is SO tight it makes me want to study the drums.

    Many thanks.

    Chris

  • oh yea..you talked about your snare.... man you gotta check out a ddrum dios 13x7 bubinga some time....... they rock man!! bubinga anything kills....like a marching drum with stank on it... :)

  • dang ! got any money in hoops?!?! haha...awsome man! Thanks for posting.... you got a good groove man

  • the roots is a grand example... =) your great!

  • Thanks man

It gives you a different approach to hip hop

  • Ohhh yeah bro, u got da flava!! I'm from Brasil and enchanted! Thnx 4 share it!

  • Hey man you sweet. Nice groove

  • YES ! Steve Jordan's sound dude ;)

Very well... like your jazz cymbal touch and feel.

Jazz and groove together for one music.

  • erm sorry man, didnt mean to compare or nothing, its just the way the video was produced reminded me of Steve's. But you guys are both extraordinary drummers in each own right

  • you remind me of Steve Jordan..you got a really nice snare sound there, do you do rim shots on it for this video?

  • Junkay - Thanks for the comment, bro. Steve Jordan?! Wow. But about the snare...thats a 12x7 Black Panther, which is the perfect size for HipHop, Drum n' Bass and Urban Gospel. It's tuned quite high (but not high enough to choke it) and I do generally play rimshot unless the situation calls for a lower volume.

  • @penski77 I'm playing a Black Panther too, but having trouble with its strong ringing. What drumhead are you using? The original Remo? I changed to an Evans Edge Control with a sound control ring, what changed the sound to a shord muffled sound even when tuned high. Do you have any suggestions? Nice groovy felling you have by the way!
