Far more personal, sensitive, and interesting than the John Williams version I just heard. I do agree that the fluctuations in tempo can be problematic (Segovia takes more liberty than just about any musician I've heard) but tempo that is too uniform can also be too rigid and unexpressive. The truth is that there are some parts of the Chaconne are more beautiful with portamento or rubato, whereas changes in tempo in other areas can really just be annoying. Bream plays very well.
i keep comming back to this to see if i can get sick of hearing bream play possibly bachs greatest work next to the mass in b minor, 2 years later and it still feels like the first time
from Jose' Sepulveda, the hermeterec to @ngupowered.......yeah, you are exactly right @ngupowered.....This is BREAM we're discussing, possibly the finest classical guitarist the world has ever produced.
from Jose' Sepulveda, the hermeterec.....I always DID think that Julian Bream was better than his "mentor" Andres Segovia and this performance did nothing to disabuse me of that notion. Bream is a genius on this instrument as well as the lute. A perfect performance.
@Hermeterec as far as the lute i think bream would laugh at that lute statement, not to discredit him in the slightest, but even he admits he dosent do it proper lute style
@ngupowered hahah go to any classical guitar video on youtube and you will always hear this comment over and over:
"Too ___, listen to (insert random relatively unknown guitarist). This Jullian Bream we're talking about, give the man some respect. This is an AWESOME performance!
from Jose', the Hermeterec Mystif.......My dear friend, Stephen Hydonus has always maintained that Julian Bream was the pre-eminent classical guitarist of his generation.......after having heard this monumental performance of the iconic Bach Chaconne I have no choice but to acceed.
I prefer David Russell's, however I love Bream. It's hard to say which instrument it is better on, violin or guitar. There are parts of the Chaconne on violin that just send shivers down your spine it is so beautiful. However the seperation and clarity of it played on guitar really highlights just how great this piece really is. So when I hear it on violin I think, "wow this is incredibly moving" and when I hear it on guitar I think, "Holy crap this piece is awesome, Bach > ALL"
Aaaah... Love this piece, better than segovia's, and his is a close second. But still, this played on the violin is the most amazing thing ever, especially Itzhak Perlman's recording.
Nothing more than a complex set of mathematical statements in which your musical mind must react more perfectly than a space shuttle launch, other wise you will be lead to melodic ruin here!
This is simply fantastic! and is a monument to Bream as a player. When I hear this it's like music from the beginning or the end of the world... It takes you right down into the bowels of the earth and then up to the heavens. It's wonderful, there is so much feeling, passion and strength there. It must be the greatest performance that we have of this piece on guitar.
i saw j.bream live once; i've never seen a.segovia playing, but j.bream was simply marvellous, unique! only i've to listen at him with my eyes closed: sitting 1 meter or so from him, grimaces on his face were rather disturbing...

Tempo too slow and fluctuating; dancers would get weary. Listen to Göran Söllscher; best version out there.

Breams my fav, but too much staccato on the demi semi quaver section , not fluid enough. His interpretation is too Spanish. Ok shoot me now.

The only way this could be better is if it were a video and we could actually watch him playing.
