  • U need Wat more shells u dumbass your clueless u need a salt and freshwater container also and how the ell does tht "safe" stepping stone work when the god damn wood I on it!???!

  • are the crabs dead?

  • One of my hermit crabs has a body that is completely tan even the pincher... what time of hermit crab is he??

  • @Fishandanimalcare

Most likely a Purple Pincher. They range in color - and depends if they have molted recently etc. If one of the front legs are dramaticaly larger than the other - PP

  • I always thought and was told that hermit crabs liked sand better than anything. The other person on expertvillage said that you need to bathe and provide a sponge in the crabs water. Does it make a difference to have a sponge in the water?

  • @jeremiahtrue1

They do like sand - their natural substrate. It has been said in most hermie circles that mixing sand and ecodirt works well (helps keep humidity up) It is important for hermies to bath - but let them do it themselves - dont stress them "forcing" a bath. Provide both dechlorinated water and marine salt water - let them decide which to use. Sponges are a pain - you have to change and clean them often. I don use them - I use coral pieces

  • What do hermit crabs eat

  • @Gamer5449

    Almost anything even POOP

  • Better then that crey

  • can you use dirt for the substrate

  • @fairash32 not dirt from the garden - but ecodirt - which is crushed coconut fiber. Many people mix sand with this..I don't personally and my guys love it and have molted fine

  • is it a good idea to use fake moss for the cage please answer

  • @doorbomber23 just remember - your hermies will nibble on anything in the crabitat - so I would say no to the fake moss - they really like frog moss or spayamum (sp?) moss and helps with humidity levels

  • how do keep your humditiy and temp at a constant? you can't with that type of lid. you are harming thier gills!where is the 2 types of water fresh and salt, where do you mention it needs to be conditioned? crabs will eat a lot of things but not everything is good for them, i do organic, or unseasoned meats, even organic babyfoods.

  • ok cool! but you forgot to mention what do they eat? anyone help me with this!

  • I've watched all your videos and thanks for helping me out

  • Thank you soo much you have helped me learn about my crabs and keep them alive longer!

  • "Add those guys to the mix" LOL!

  • and a 10g tank doesn't even cost much. Less than a Kritter Keeper. 10g is about 10 dollars, and you can make a sufficient setup. Crabs live in a tropical environment whose temps go probably not much lower than 65 in the middle of winter. In the heat of the summer when they're out and active in the wild though, it reaches up to 90-100 degrees. I find my crabs like it the best about about 85. That keeps them the most active.

  • Not a bad setup, except for the substrate should be moist, any species other than purple pinchers need saltwater (Ecuadorians are becoming increasingly popular at various chain stores). Also, plastic doesn't hold heat or humidity well.

  • A moist substrate that they can easily burrow in (sand castle consistency), they molt. 10g is minimum recommended, for about 4 medium crabs. 10 crabs in a 10g, unless they're a micro (and they'll graduate to small after about 3 years) is way overcrowded.

  • He doesn't even have enough room to put all that junk he has in the cage

  • That guy should not have that job! 1st: Hermit crabs need a place to hide. Like a coconut shell or something! 2nd: Hermit crabs need fresh AND salt water! And finally, 3rd: NO PAINTED SHELLS!!!!!!!!!

  • what pet store are you at

  • you covered the "stepping stones" for them to get safely out if the deep water bowl with the log..

  • Its Matt Hardy

  • good if you have to keep it humid then i can got ont bcc my house gets REALLY hot in the summer

  • and i wouldnt use salt water from the beach :I just normal hermie salt found:petsmart, petco

  • why uses that big oh a log?????

  • @hermitcrabgurl101 that's what she said. hahaha! but in all seriousness, i agree that the cork bark chunk he used was to large

  • thanks i needed your help with my 2 hermite crabs is it ok to use saltwater from the beach?

  • i have a purple pincher crab

  • what if you have a tank thats 20 gallons but is only 6 inches wide and 6 inches long?

  • No room to walk :\

    But good tut :)

  • well i kind of got a good info so i will try t o us it

  • this guys is good i have two hermit crabs and it seems like he knows what hes talking about i dont know why u people post comments and make up ur own rules for hermit crabs u guys r just jealous that he know the real rules of hermit crabs

  • i found one on a beach in mississippi and it was almost in the water along with many big ones but i took the small one home what kind is it and how should i care for it?

  • they are cute

  • There's black stuff with white webs in my hermit crab's tank .What is it ?

  • how much do they cost in toltal?

  • @alliechskabruja they cost about 20 to 35

  • is cocoa husk or cocoa fiber better?

  • @TheReper1210 eco earth or non toxic potting soil is best

  • I hate to sound rude, but I find that tank to be a litte small for 2 hermit crabs. Hermit crabs are in fact active animals a require room to walk around as well as areas to dig and climb. I hope people look into better sources for hermit crab care before thinking that they can buy a hermit crab.

  • @linkylova My hermit crabs loved having a little runway with no obstacles to kind of charge around and blow off extra energy.

  • @4mereptiles1 he might be getting ready to molt or just de-stressing. just keep his food and water up and he should be fine =). leave him alone for a couple of days and check the humidity and temperature. if he does molt you should move him and his exoskeleton to a seperate tank so he can recover because he will be weak. hermit crabs are CANNIBALS and will attack eatchother if weak. after a few days he should be ready to go back in with your larger crab. =)

  • Can someone help me with mine so far in mine i have

    3 hermit crabs

    10 gallon tank

    some tropical bark

    bottled water dish

    crab food

    lettuce

    and some huts

Please tell me what else i need

  • @SunnyandSky salt water, at least 3in of conpressed substrate, heat sorce maybe just a side clamp lanp only about $10, bigger shells a little bigger than what they have at least 3, and finally daily misting.

  • Good info, but he needs a larger tank, and a salt water bowl.

  • isint it kind of small for those 2 hermit crabs!!?????

  • how much money did that cost?

    the cage

  • how much money did that cost?

  • hermiiiiiiiis

    i want one!!!

  • i miss mine

  • btw i was going to buy that same coco bark but it was recalled for danger

  • Got the tank set up might get some today whoooo

  • YESS finally prob getting some on the weeeeeekeeeeeneeeeeed

  • are they well tempered

  • what do you do with the food that they didnt eat after you change it?

  • guys it won't help if you just keep saying they're wrong. If you want to help at least tell us where we can get real help...

  • the tank is sooooo small. your putting 2 in there?!

  • can i use sand?

  • @mcpierrecomeros Yes, but it's a good idea to mix the sand in/put half sand in with coconut substrate. You need a few inches of bedding though, and that can cost a lot if you're just using sand.

  • @mcpierrecomeros sand is not good because it can get into their shell and neither is gravel because hermit crabs like to dig and it is hard for them to dig in gravel so I would reccommend the coconut bedding or any tyoe of crab bedding :)

  • @bailee1412 coconut shavings..... i cannot find them dude, i didnt know about the sand please let me know where to buy coco shavings. if you know, in canada. ive seen sand in petsmart

  • i never fo that...never will.....plus my hermit crab is healthy and active

  • @MrArgyman i think they are right.i do what they say and m6y pets are in perfect shape.

  • i thought u have to put sand

  • COCO bark?!?! hahaah XD

  • Have you ever noticed he has the same crabs in every vid?

  • can i put like a lizard or a gecko in a tank whit this guys?

  • @erikanaid No.

  • @erikanaid i won't

  • one gallon per hermit crab is to less a Coenobita breviamanus grows up to 15cm if you put him in a one gallon habitat he will be dead after three days

  • hey what tank do you recomand plastic or glass and what bedding do you recomand and what size of tank do you recomand 10 gallons or 20 gallons and can the food dish be alittle bit smaller and what toys do you recomand in the tank and whats the amount of water and food need ed and do they need a spounge for the water ?

  • I have eight hermit crabs in a forty gallon breeder and I can tell you a kk or kritter keeper is never going to be adequate because even the largest size available doesn't offer enough space for two water bowls, food bowl, hide and climbing structure and still have adequate roaming space available.

  • They can't be in painted shells. It makes it hard for them to breath and if the paint rubs off and they eat it it's toxic and they will die. I have a TWENTY gallon tank for TWO hermit crabs and they love it. A ten gallon is ok though. Believe me I've had hermit crabs for over TWO years!

  • i use a sea shell for the food dish, not a small bowl :/

  • @twlightt 10 gallon is correct. thats good for about 3-4 small hermit crabs. you could also use an under tank heater, but with that size tank, go with the smallest one u can find and u will be good

  • i love ur guys videos

  • how? ?? @_@ then tell me whats good site

  • how?

  • NEVER EVER keep hermit crabs together when they molt!!! Crabs love to eat shed exoskeletons and will often go after the freshly shed crab too! Constantly check to see if a crab is about to molt and move it to an isolation tank so it can dig down and do it's thing. I've kept three crabs for about 6 years now and have never had a cannibalism but I've had a couple close calls!

  • i only keep my crabs in that when i'm cleaning their tank. i have 4 hermit crabs in a 20 gallon tank. there's no way you can get proper heat and humidity in those small plastic tanks.

  • Expert Village is fine for some animals but always do your own research.

  • plz help how much hermit crabs do you recomend for a 10 gallon tank how do i keep it humid what toys do i buy how do i keep a faily low budget help plz

  • @thegamingchannle1 Here's my advice. Start with 2 if you have a 10 gallon because they like company and can die of loneliness if kept by themselves. Give them lots of climbing toys and deep substrate. They love to climb and dig but NEVER keep them in the same tank when they're molting. They can eat each other when that happens. Give them LOTS of shells to avoid fights. Mine like to eat fruits, veggies, dried brine shrimp and Ritz crackers. They also love a little salt water with fresh water.

  • I just got a hermit crab and am really new at this. Can someone give me some great advice and tips for basic care and what they like and what they need to be at their healthiest and happiest???? Thanks anyone!

  • @TTerror97 it actually depends on the crab. However I do agree with you, 1 gallon per crab seems small, I can't ever imagine having 10 crabs in a 10 gallon tank.

  • where do i get that stuff from

  • i got jamacian hermit crabs does it make a difference

  • But their is one more thing I wanted to mention that no one else has; the top of the tank's ventilation. As he says in the video, you want about 70% humidity. Unless you seal a good majority of those holes at the top, your going to have a tough time keeping that level of humidity.

  • I agree kawaii, one gallon per crab............... omg they will die and they would have no were to go.

  • @jumper098123 please tell me your email

  • Does the shell grow with them?

  • @kdensk no hermit crab shells don't grow with them, you have to buy or find new ones for them as they grow but, you will need to boil them before you introduce them to your crabitat or it will more than likely spread bacteria if you don't.

  • my brother brought me lots of hermit crabs after his snorkeling in the philippines.. i wonder if they are land or aquatic type of hermies.. i suppose they are aquatic.. but can they live in land too? i have several land hermits can they go together?

  • I use small stones that you buy for the hermit crabs from the pet shop.

  • EVERYONE: THREE hermit crabs need a ten gallon tank. They need a salt and fresh water bowl, both different bowls, a food bowl, 4-5 inches of substrate, stuff to climp on, a humidity+heat thermomiter, a heater, spray bottle where you can spray water for humidity, sheels with NO PAINT, and...I think that's it. Make sure they can't drown in the water bowls.

  • perhaps seashells will be good for a water bowl?

  • @IsaiahTB No. They need to be able to completly submerdge.

  • I ment as a water dish. I know they need to completly submerge

  • @IsaiahTB Then seashells wouldn't be good because they're not big enough. They're very good food dishes, though.

  • @ROckDEcoy Geez, um.... about 15 hermit crabs. That will be a lot of shells!

  • hi, i just got a couple of hermit crabs and mine are raspberry hermit crabs i believe? I'm really new to this and I really dont know much, is there anything different that I should have in my habitat? I have beach sand and some sphagnum moss that I got from the petstore, it had hermit crabs on it so I assumed it was okay, would this be good for them to live in?

  • Dont hermit crabs drink from sponges?

  • @Mario10153 yes, most of the time they will

  • were do you buy them i cant find them in spain

  • @ROckDEcoy wow u could put about 15 hermit crabs!

  • @rs1sgtcolonel Yeah I have a ten gallon tank and I only keep 4 hermit crabs in there and even that seems to be too small for them. I wish I could give them more room.

  • and you need to have your sand or FB(forrest bedding and its not the substrate he is using) or coconut fiber at least 2-3 1/2 inches taller then the crab in the iso tank and smaller hermit crabs go thru more molts a year then larger crabs and when molting hermit crabs need extra calcium like powdered cuttlebone and let them keep theyre exo skeleton in theyre tank because they eat theyre exoskleleton for calcium also

  • you need an iso(isolation tank for a hermit crabs safet because hermit crabs are canabal and will willingly eat each other and plus they eat them especially when they are molting because they are vulnerable and they taste better and smell better to a hermit crab and an iso tank should have sand or FB(forest bedding) or cocunut fiber that is so moist that you can make a sand castle just dont make it drippy!

  • what does it mean when a hermit crab looses there claw cause i had 2 hermit crabs but 1 died. then 5 days after the 1st 1 died my other ones fell off or something no one was playing with it then i saw its claw lying at the other side of the aquarium PLEASE HELP

  • @sexyzeroman148 I know hermit crabs sometimes loose limbs when the living conditions are wrong, or when they're under stress. Do you own a humidity gauge? It should be at 70-80% humidity, I believe. Don't use tap water in your water dishes, and don't bathe them too often. Also hermit crabs are very social, and should be kept in groups of 3, so it might be lonely? But other than that, hermit crabs do sometimes loose limbs, and they can be regenerated through molting. Hope that helped a bit. :D

  • @sexyzeroman148 Hermit crabs molt so they will lose legs and their pinchers. This is completely normal. I had a crab that somehow lost all but two legs on one side of his body and they grew back within a month. Oh, and make sure that your "dead crab" is really dead. I once thought my crab was dead and the "body" fell ouf of the shell...I rinsed it out and put the "empty shell" back in the tank for the other crabs to use if they wanted and that crab ended up being still alive deep in the shell

  • yay!!! im getting crabs soon! and if i keep a hermit crab alive for 3 months, i get a turtle!!!!

  • @riverofblood410 Hermit crabs are born diggers. They usually live in the tropics, and sand is instinctively familiar to them. Also, when wet, sand is perfect for digging tunnels in. Which crabs need to do when they molt.

    Hope this helps!

  • i need HELP! my hermit crab is sick! i know for sure! he is very pale and ive had him for about a month now. His arm fell off but when that happens normally hes in his shell iof its cuz hes mad but he is active. He walks very slowly now but idk what to do if hes sick. I was gone for a week while my mom took care of him. I have 1 other one in his cage. I just got back and noticed he had a sever color change hes noticibly pale i dont want him to die what do i do?!

  • @smileyblackpannther he most likely molted. Its normal for them to do that... make sure he has a variety of fruits and veggies & salt and fresh water. If he did molt that you could be seeing his exo-skeleton and not his actual leg. When your Hermit Crabs molt you should leave the exo-skeleton in with them because they will eat it 2 regain the calcium. I would take an egg shell boil it and put it in there to give it more calcium. other than that try to keep the other crab away so it wont eat it.

  • @jumper098123

cool, so how do I know if my hermit crab is sick or about to die?

  • how many can u put in a large criter keeper?

  • kudos, you got most of it right. that is a first for people putting out tutorials on youtube. but, you forgot the salt water dish. not all crabs use it, but some do. also, you need extra shells. the painted shell is a total NO. and along with loving to climb, they also like free space. so, that cage, was definitely NOT large enough for those two crabs.

  • Note : It is not very easy to take care of. Some of these vids are not very correct

  • i had a 10g tank for my hermit crabs.. and i tink dats a small tank.. im prolly geting a hermit crab soon! YAY! leave me sum comments on how to take caree of themm! :]

  • hi im scared about my crabs i have 4 and i have sang and no place 4 them to clim where can i get that stuff?

  • @jumper098123 Got a 5 in conch shell from beach and put it in saltwater aquarium. It has a huge reddish colored hermit crab with white spots and blue eyes in it. not sure what it is or if its dangerous to our fish. Please need help asap I have pics

  • Do u need a heatpad or heatlamp??

  • @pinoyviper head pad

  • im gettin a hermit crab s0on,wat are some of the things i should get for the crab, and depending on the size of the hermit crab, does it matter wat size of tank i need?is it ok if i put any type of sand ,from any other store.''thaks''

  • I'm sure this has been said below but people might only spot the first page. No mention of dechlorinating the water, no mention of providing salt water. Putting 10 crabs in a 10 gallon tank is a really bad idea unless they are tiny. Oh, and what should we feed them?!

  • I have a hermit crab and I found 6 on the beach and picked them up, and after four days they're still alive. I hope they live more than that

  • @TheKawaiiMermaid

I rather chuckled at how he notes that the water dish would be fine because it has the steps to climb out, and then covers them up with the wood.

And I agree, that tank was entirely too small for the size of the items he put in there.

  • he forgot to say to ad a spare shell!

  • how much du they cost

and how to tell a male from female

  • Can i use bottled water for drinking water? i use tap water and use declorinator with hermit crab salt

  • wow

  • I had two hermit crabs...i came home one day and there was 3 and they were all dead. I never kept the cage humid...i was never told to...would this be the cause of death?? Please reply...i'm planning on getting 2 new ones this week.

    Thankyou

  • to much in the tank

  • what is that a one gallon? you need a 10 or 20 gallon, not a 1 gallon.

  • @bizziebodie1996 sorry, but deffinitely not. I would say a 10 gallon tank minimum. i keep three tiny crabs in a ten gallon tank but i think i will upgrade when they get bigger. sure, the guy says you can put 1 crab for 1 gallon but thats not true! try 1 hermit crab for 3 gallons thats a good system. hope this helped!

  • it says on the video...

  • what about extra shells, shelter, heat, and the tank is tiny.

  • he forgot shells

  • There are also a lot of other mistakes. A plastic cage is way too small and doesn't keep in the humidity well. Glass is NEEDED, and the minimum size tank is a ten gallon. 1 gallon per crab is SO UNTRUE! It would only be true for tiny crabs, but that is on top of a ten gallon tank. Smalls need 3-4 gallons, mediums need 5-6, larges need 7-8, and jumbos need 9-10. You can go a teeny bit less than that if you want, and more would be awesome. But that is the general gallon per crab rule.

  • I think he delivers what he claims, which is: basic care.

I didn't notice any "misinformation" he didn't say "Don't put extra shells"; "Never use heat pads" and your claim about 1 gallon per crab being not a good enough rule for housing is arguable, so his information is good on a basic level.

  • And really, a 4 minute video is only enough time for basics. at best. Most of what people know is bogus any way. Most of what I read here as comments are bogus. Too much folk lore influence on keeping hermit crabs as pets. Too much cutting and pasting of what is perceived as knowledge but founded only on assumption and guess work. I have tremendous success first by tossing all that folk lore out the window. The bottom line is are you serious or is this a fad.

  • I'll use this water dish because of it's nice little stepping stone, and now, we cover that up with coco bark

  • u guys all say this guy is wrong but he is a proffesional. I think he knows what he's doing and he's helped me alot.

  • Yeah, like 5 gallons per crab is better!

  • the REAL rule is 4 gal.....

  • Plastic habitats suck. Always get glass.

  • o thank you ill try to get a cover as soon as i can

  • mine died last night :( i had the extra shell out of the cage n it came out of its shell now i only have one :((

  • can the habitats be open or do they have to have a enclosure

  • @tavolorgia Its better for it to be closed in so that you can maintain the humidity and temperature easier.

  • "I like giving my animals a lot of room."- what ever my 3 crabs live in a 10 gallon

  • Should i buy one or two to start out with?

  • buy more than 2

  • Also, be careful about ones from big pet stores. My friend got one, and the person had to check with the manager to see which crabs were alive or dead!!!

Needless to say, there were 3 dead crabs, and hers died 5 days after she had it!!

  • when I was little I got ones from the petstore

    went through 2 of them

they all died in like a week

  • I meant to say ISN"T

  • where are the extra shell?

  • QUESTION: is it true i should buy two rather than one so its no lonely or is it okay if i just get one?

  • Polkadotlover34 i need your help my new hermit crab just died and i dont know how long i should wait to get a new one

  • im keeping mine in my room!!!

so they have a lot of space to move!!

  • hey he has the same water boul as me

  • Lol! :D Polkadots rule, though! They're so nice, cute, and lovable!!! ! I like hermit crabs, better though.

  • Thanks for your video. Strait forward, articulate and to the point.

  • No painted shells!!!!

  • Do they bite or do any sort of injury to you?

My roomate bought a hermit crab, and I am sort of freaked out ... ._.

  • can i use sand as the bedding?

  • Sand is best do not use only

garvel play sand is good but no calci sand

  • i recently got some hermit crabs, and i am getting worried that they havent touched their food. plz respond

  • do u have to clean the stuff like driftwood from the beach or can u just leave it?

  • i have 5 hermit crabs that have been living happy. 2 crabs have molted this week and i have one that has been nakedall day earler today i though he has dead not moreing and was on his back but came back to life but this hasn't picked a shell what is going on what can i do. i have him in his own tank now with a couple of shells (i have 30 he could pick from) what can i do

  • also would i be able to feed it any veggie any meat and any fruit

  • i'm gonna get 4 hermit crabs maybe more how big should my tank be?

  • 4 gallons.

  • no - 40 gallons, I believe. He said 1 gallon per hermit crab. :)

  • ..40 gallons...?
