Nice work Jared! and I agree! its really dumb how these cam-nerds try to do the "AK-47 test" on these and experiment the camera's capabilities to its extreme and expect that it will still work smoothly.
I used to be critical about my 17-35 2.8 But I got over the soft corners at 2.8 and love this lens for its sharpness and contrast! When I shoot night photography I shoot the lens wide open all the time! The sensor does normally produce a few dead pixels which I correct in photoshop! At the end of the day we are very lucky to be having fun with such great technology! I agree with this vid totally. Stop measurebating! It's a waste of creativity!
You don't drive a new Ferrari at 300km/h and complain that the drink holder isn't sufficient for securing a smaller-than-normal can of redbull without spilling. Well, come to think of it, some people might...
All I can say is i love my D7000. works great with the 70-200mm f/2.8. And yes people need to quit complaining about non-real world issues. The highest ISO I've ever used was probably 1200. Who uses the H1 or H2 settings. I'd probably use it to check it out, but would never use it if on assignment.
You are right on the issue of overanalyzing things. By the way, I am european and I can tell you this is a typically american thing. And it applies not only to photography but also to every field you can imagine.
@catfishBG the auto focus issues i have had I pretty much have tracked down to the 24-70 2.8 as I have been having issues with that on the d3s. But other lenses like the 14-24 are killer on both.

Here here I agree mate, shoot dont bleat with all the sheep back focus, dead pixels, metering etc ect cut and paste waffle. 9 months use now and its a great little camera so for those who whinge carry on while I am out producing well exposed sharp images.. Are Nikon going to spend millions to produce a dog so they can make their sales go through the floor? what utter tosh
2 dead pixels mean nothing, especially at high ISOs. But I remember when in 2008 I had a brand new Canon S5 IS, I took it to Greece for a week and an orange line, vertical, about 1/3 into the frame appeared. The line was visible both on the screen and in every image on the computer. It was some kind of sensor problem. I took the camera to Canon and they told me it would cost around $260 to fix EVEN THOUGH IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. This might have been a rare problem, but I don't trust Canon.
I've upgrade from D5000 to D7000. The D7000 rocks and the low light shooting is so good. Was shooting indoor sport and the light is super terrible and dark. I use a sigma 70-200 f2.8 and shooting raw, i only need to use iso 2000 max and the photo is well usable. Just need to adjust some the colour a little and sharpen it up a litte in photoshop afterwards, but is all good at 2000. I can't see the point of using anything over 3200 on a D7000. Those people that complain about High iso need to ....
Here Here there is so much balls talked about most cameras it to drives me mad
"I dropped my D7000 from a 7 storey building and it broke I thought the Mag alloy was tough" what a doughnut Some of the posts I have seen are amazing guys trying to push the camera beyond its caperbility then moaning. total total blot heads.
thanks man!! i got my d7000 just two weeks ago and it is my first camera. im a total newbie when it comes to shooting, but i know what i want and my d7000 gives it all to me.
I just bought the d7000 kit. upgraded from an oldie d100 so i love the new cemera. but was wondering that why do most professional photographer use Canon. every time i watch a professional out door shoot video, i hardly ever see a high end nikon. I am not an expert but i was told by a photographer 8 years ago to go with nikon because they are better built.
Well done mate, Im 63 and agree with ya. In 5 weeks tme I am buying a D&000 and some auxiliary equipment to go with it. All because of people like you giving me encouragement.
Can you do a RANT on those cretins that pick on Newbies who ask "Dumb!!" questions please?
During the RANT, please remind them they were once newbies, even those born with a camera in their hand.
Anyway, well done. Now i am going to watch your How to Tutorials 1 and 2.
LOL your rants are awesome... It's the equivalent of kicking noobs in the face.
I had a guy who wanted to literally sell his D90 and upgrade to a D7000 just because of "the amazing new noise capability" ----- he was shooting with a kit lens *face palm*
I am sick of people bashing what was the absolute latest and greatest months/years ago and basically call it "shit" relative to the next camera in a line. GET OUT AND SHOOT---- sucking less comes first before new cameras lol.
Thanks Jared. These people who are doing this crap are people who are focusing on the equipment, not the setup of the photo. I'm a blind man with a DSLR that "only" ake 3 frames per second. I "only" have 10 megapixels. You know what? I'm taking pictures. It's fun. People need to get over it.
The issues you brought up are common for those who use technology but don't bother to learn how it works. Not deep technical analysis, but they don't even bother with the basics of electronic imaging. It's just easier to bitch than learn.
I AGREE MAN ITS HURTS THE PPL THAT WANT TO DO HOMEWORK ON NEW PRODUCTS THEY TALK ABOUT EXTREMES AND SOMETIMES MOVE THAT PERSON TO NOT GO FOR WHAT THEY WANTED . I HAVE BEEN DOING MY HOMEWORK ON THE D7000 THAT IM ABOUT TO BUY BUT I HAVE SEEN SOME NON CREDIBLE BLOGS ABOUT " ISSUES".....BUT I HAVE ONE QUESTION HAVE YOU SEEN ANYTHING ABOUT THE CAMERA OVER HEATING IN VIDEO MODE ?
@paranoid492 i do believe our difference within what is considered semi expert and professional is small now. d7000 is perhaps all everyone need. go to... freedslr(.)com remove () and get a chance to bring home a new Nikon D7000
I've been shooting the d7000 for a couple months now, and I came across a lot of blogs and forums with the dead pixel stuff. My camera works flawlessly, and yes, under extreme high ISO, some pixels go red or blue. But life is short! If in every shot there was a dozen red spots then maybe get it looked at. Anyways I appreciate this rant. You make some good points in this video. Keep them coming. Thanks!

While I generally agree with your sentiments, it is misleading when a lens is advertised with certain specs or a camera is promoted in writing to be able to do x,y, x and it doesn't do those things, that is a real problem. It borderlines on false advertising. Don't give the manufacturers a pass, Jared.
do you have a Canon VS Nikon rant? I'm tired of explaining to my friends that it doesnt really matter what they shoot with and that there neither one is definately and absolutely better than the other
I got two hot pixels, when I shot night-black skyline, called Nikon and they said wait for a fireware. I just got the latest firmware and thye fixed the hot pixels. Good thing I stayed cool and didn't returned it. Love my D7000, got great shots from it. I thought it was a little soft out of the box, went into the menu and bumped up the sharpness. Back focusing issue is something I don't recall happening, just some whiners that don't know how to focus on an object.
This vid tells it all!! Get out and shoot and don't bother with the forum trolls. 99 percent of the forum troll don't even use the camera under the conditions that the problem exists.
people is over reacting about that d7000 issue and the 24-70 f2.8 light leak. saw that video, as a matter of fact that guy "light leak" is a nikon guy too..but it seems hes just over reacted about his 24-70 light leak discovery. common sense! nobody shoots like that..i mean 24-70mm is a great3x lens. i dont care about the feedbacks on the d7000 coz for me d7000 is very nice camera and shoots 1080p video..as jared says " just keep it simple".dont complicate it. enjoy it while you have it. cheers!
I couldn't agree more. Problems are often blown out of proportion.
Even though i agree, i discovered a problem with my D5000 not long ago. When shooting at as low as ISO 500 i discovered several red, green and blue "dead" pixels, and they where indeed very visible; without going to the extremes. Of course even Nikon can make faults, but at least my warranty would cover it, right? No. Nikon wouldn't even recognize the problem, and this is where i often see the real problem is being overlooked.
Theres an update out for the nikon. Ive been debating getting the d7000 or the 60d, Im waiting a month becuase i want to see if they have the back focusing issue fixed on the nikon. Other wise i would pick one up tommorrow on boxing day.
@Jasshands1 i prefer the nikon hands down. I dont see an issue with the camera and back focusing. That to me is more lens specific and less about the camera. Keep it simple dont read into to many forums.
@JaredPolin Yea ive been having the same problem, reading these damn forums has me all freaked out. Dude love the rant, really talked some sense into me. I ordered the d7000 a few days ago and starting to have regret reading into these forum posts.
@JaredPolin I got the D7000 when it first arrived and it does back focus with a lenses that works fine on my D3, such as the 85, 24-70, 35-70 and even a DX Tokina 11-16 works fine on my D3. 8 out of 10 photos are back focused but I eliminate this issue with sharpening. Besides, won't be noticeable at 1600x1000 (rounded number). But half of the back focused photos are really bad but like I said, won't be noticeable at 1600x1000.
@Nitek09Z Yes I ended up going to the nikon, cuase thats what iv always ued. ANd i would never switch it for a 60d, the magnesium upper body already saved me ass literally while hikinh when i fell lol
i bought a D7000 and had the pixel problem. I don't think "fro" fully understands the problem. I understand that on the forums, they are whining about pixels they see in the dark... my problem was that at ANY light level, there were a few obvious SPOTS in the video... not at weird low light situations.. just in my house, normal light.. take a video.. and boom... spots on the screen. they were there 100% of the time. all teh tiem. pictures were great..but video had spots in it.
well... do you know Lilkiwiguy87 ... channel of some guys making lens reviews... in my opinion they are such guys whining about stuff like dead pixels and stuff like that... well.. not about dead pixels.. they normally doing lens reviews... but i hope you know what i mean
"light leak" guy had a valid complaint, IMO. He wasn't shooting at high ISO (took it down to 200) and still had the problem (significantly). There's no reason to be standing under a bright light source in a studio, but if you take it outdoors or in any other circumstance where you don't have complete control of the light? It can significantly alter the complexion of a photo. Bottom line... it's a sixteen hundred dollar lens and you can't blame him for wanting his money's worth. Just my $.02
agreed (neither did I, when I was a Nikon shooter), but I understood it to be a little more wide spread than a few copies. If it was indeed just a few copies affected then, yes, it's an overreaction and probably sparked a nice fear campaign as well.
Well said Jared its what I call the HI FI syndrome people listen to the crackles not the music then when you ask what was the music you were just playing they say "what music"?
Same goes with cameras " OMG! I have 5 hot pixels out of 16.2 million when I take a picture in a Chilean mine "
"what did you photograph down the mine" ? "umm let me think OH! yes............ 5 hot pixels"
Hi Jared. The internet has made posible a lot of non sense about technology detail.
I also have a music recording studio... you should hear the kind of things that are said in audio!!!! Many people go to forums for many differente reasons... but very few have a sincere desire to learn and share knowledge. Most of them want to feel really cool
It is refreshing to watch someone like you with top notch equipment talking about cheap equipment and how it is possible to achieve good results with it.
While I agree with most of what you are saying, from their POV, I think people are mostly upset because they spent a lot of money on a camera that was not perfect right out of the box. They probably feel gypped, and it upsets them. What is wrong with people not liking the fact their new camera, is not in tip top shape after they plunked down $1,200+ dollars on the thing? Just saying...
totally agree with Jared.. I keep seeing the same thing over and over again. Unless your are an extreme photographer shooting up on Mount Everest, it's going to be fine. Stop making a mountain over a mole hill !!!! You drive your car 100mph every day, guess what.. it's going to bust up faster than it would if you would drive it only 60mph.
Preach on brother!!!! The forums out there have gotten OVER THE TOP. Go out and use your camera as it was intended to be used. I have yet to sell a picture of a brick wall or spec chart to my customers. :~)
The D7000 is a awesome camera and i agree that too many people bitch about the problems. I too had the pixel problem. These actually show right on the LCD screen, and apply to the video as well during recording at any ISO, using the kit lens, on any video setting. I returned it and the second one i got was perfect. Nikon has already admitted there is a problem and is developing a firmware by the end of December.
can you help me plz! what is the meaning of (motorized) in sigma lens ? i have a nikon D90 want to buy sigma 70-300 apo dg, is the lens full compatible with camera? is the AF of the lens fully working with it? please help me. and another thing can i use sigma 2X tale converter with the lens (in MF mode)? please help me on this.
I have ran about 2000 frames through my D7000 and it has worked perfectly. Everything, including video, is spot on! I also think that video is a novelty feature that really shouldn't be implemented in DSLR cameras. Because do you buy a video camera to make stills? So if there is some video bugs I really wouldn't care.
I have two bright white pixel that shows up both on the LCD and the video file output from my D7000 regardless of the ISO (I see it easily at ISO 100) - but I don't see it with stills output. This is the same regardless of what lens I use (Tokina 11-16, Nikkor 35 f/1.8, Sigma 50 f/1.4, and Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 vrii). I got the camera to shoot stills, so it's no huge deal to me, but as a consumer, it is disappointing when the video performs worse than my Canon S95.
i agree, when i bought my first dslr, people said that it has this and that issue, but when i used it, I never encountered it until i tried to replicate it.
That aside, i wanna ask you something JP
I m very interested in buying the D7000, i think it rocks as an enthusiast camera(even though i love Canon) but i heard it actually has worse metering than the old system, please tell me that's not true or that it'll be fixed later
@mahamza86 You just didn't understand what that RANT is about. The Fro gives examples, not a list about faked issues of the D7000. He just explained you don't have to panic when reading detailed analytic reviews. Do you really think Nikon would have released a new DSLR with such a problem...

He just explained you don't have to panic when reading detailed analytic reviews. Do you really think Nikon would have released a new DSLR with such a problem...
i completely agree, everyone flips out over minor issues, kinda like the iPhone 4 "anteannagate" bs. Apple found that less than .5 of 1% of ppl were actually experiencing the issue but ppl just freaked out and made it seem like it was everywhere
Awesome rant, some people just want to look for faults to offset the feeling of obsolesce of their current gear while forgetting the real purpose of it in the first place lol.
yes! finally thanks jared! exactly about the photocharts, haha when is someone going to do that in reality. thanks for putting that out there i thought i was the only one
I totally understand what you're saying but there are genuine issues in real world situations that occur often enough for people to have a legitimate gripe. For the kind of money they charge for these cameras, QC should be very high. So I'm not disagreeing with you, there are certainly people on web forums that are way too pedantic & are unrealistic in their expectations. Again, there are also those that have every right to be angry.
The people who sit and shoot these test charts ect all day are pretty rubbish at photography just look on flickr groups who chitchat gear all the time, don't get this, don't get that blah blahblah. Great rant btw:)
While I understand what your saying, my experience is nothing like you describe. I have a cluster of pixels, in the middle of mine and they are easily visible during live view, and in lower light situations, not low low light just lower light, so much so my wife pointed them out to me. I sent it to Nikon and they would not fix it. They said it was acceptable. None of my shots took place a high iso. I hope the fix they have coming works.
@keltontrey I agree, I think some are confusing hot pixels and stuck pixels. Most understand that hot pixels can occur at high ISO. My first D7000 was a disaster. Stuck pixels showing up in photos and video at any ISO. Indoor video was not an option for me because red and blue pixels were always visible. I returned my D7000 and got one that works fine in video now.
Plus, if this wasn't a REAL problem why would Nikon be releasing a firmware update to address it.
@shadowblack1987 Do you want me to show you the scanned copy of the work order and the email that I recently received from Nikon indicating that they initially thought that it was not interfering with image quality but because of the volume of the reports they are releasing the firmware? Check the other 2 vids I uploaded showing the pixels.
What a great rant...I thought by the title you were gonna rant about my new D7000...very refreshing to hear this much more realistic approach to equipment, and yes, it's easy to get carried away testing gear...let's go use it...
I have to thank you, I just purchased this camera a month ago and happen to love the camera. I have two of the hot pixels that only show up in rare circumstances. Most of the time even in low light the pixels don't show up. I find it complete BS that people keep posting the BS dead pixel problem. This camera is wonderful, I hope to purchase some additional glass when I have more money. Keep on posting videos I love all the information you are putting on the web. Thank you!
Holy shit... i couldn't disagree more. People are spending hard-earned money to buy gear from these multi-million dollar companies. It is a FACT that all major manufacturers rush product to market before it is ready.
I'm on my 2nd D7000 body. The first had 30+ hot pixels at ISO 3200 (which is real world in an interior low light setting). At 100ISO as many as 10 pixels were visibly stuck or hot.
Do you really believe this is acceptable for a $1500 piece of gear? Really?
@MeloCreativeFilms I'm with you Melo. People trying to blame this issue on our imagination or something is really annoying. I mean ok, *you're* not experiencing hte issue. Fine. We are. That's why Nikon is putting a firmware fix out for it....because it's not in our imagination.
Amen! I couldn't agree more! Heck if people are unhappy with their D7000 I'll take it. I wouldn't complain about that crap. My d90 was stolen from me a couple months ago and I cannot tell you how annoying it is to hear people over analyzing things and blowing it out of proportion. Be grateful that you have the equipment in the first place! Jared hit the nail on the head.
thank you! great vid.
over-analyzers can make the best camera sound cheap. if anyone doesn't like his D7000, i gladly take it.
sometimes, a rant is necessary...

Anyway, well done. Now i am going to watch your How to Tutorials 1 and 2.

I am sick of people bashing what was the absolute latest and greatest months/years ago and basically call it "shit" relative to the next camera in a line. GET OUT AND SHOOT---- sucking less comes first before new cameras lol.

Back focusing issue is something I don't recall happening, just some whiners that don't know how to focus on an object.

people is over reacting about that d7000 issue and the 24-70 f2.8 light leak. saw that video, as a matter of fact that guy "light leak" is a nikon guy too..but it seems hes just over reacted about his 24-70 light leak discovery. common sense! nobody shoots like that..i mean 24-70mm is a great3x lens. i dont care about the feedbacks on the d7000 coz for me d7000 is very nice camera and shoots 1080p video..as jared says " just keep it simple".dont complicate it. enjoy it while you have it. cheers!
pepebasher 1 year ago
I couldn't agree more. Problems are often blown out of proportion.
Even though i agree, i discovered a problem with my D5000 not long ago. When shooting at as low as ISO 500 i discovered several red, green and blue "dead" pixels, and they where indeed very visible; without going to the extremes. Of course even Nikon can make faults, but at least my warranty would cover it, right? No. Nikon wouldn't even recognize the problem, and this is where i often see the real problem is being overlooked.

Jasshands1 1 year ago
@Jasshands1 i prefer the nikon hands down. I dont see an issue with the camera and back focusing. That to me is more lens specific and less about the camera. Keep it simple dont read into to many forums.

@JaredPolin Yea ive been having the same problem, reading these damn forums has me all freaked out. Dude love the rant, really talked some sense into me. I ordered the d7000 a few days ago and starting to have regret reading into these forum posts.
xjoewhitex 1 year ago
@JaredPolin I got the D7000 when it first arrived and it does back focus with a lenses that works fine on my D3, such as the 85, 24-70, 35-70 and even a DX Tokina 11-16 works fine on my D3. 8 out of 10 photos are back focused but I eliminate this issue with sharpening. Besides, won't be noticeable at 1600x1000 (rounded number). But half of the back focused photos are really bad but like I said, won't be noticeable at 1600x1000.

i bought a D7000 and had the pixel problem.

The only "complaint" I have about my D7000 is the lack of 60fps mode at 720p, and inability to control the aperture during liveview.
To anyone who also wants this fixed, e-mail Nikon @ nikon.ca/en/Contact.aspx
eleventhphotograph 1 year ago
"light leak" guy had a valid complaint, IMO. He wasn't shooting at high ISO (took it down to 200) and still had the problem (significantly). There's no reason to be standing under a bright light source in a studio, but if you take it outdoors or in any other circumstance where you don't have complete control of the light? It can significantly alter the complexion of a photo. Bottom line... it's a sixteen hundred dollar lens and you can't blame him for wanting his money's worth. Just my $.02
ragnarocking 1 year ago
@ragnarocking I dont have an issue with the lens and either does greg, there are always minor issues that are possible for people to get bad copies.
JaredPolin 1 year ago
@JaredPolin
agreed (neither did I, when I was a Nikon shooter), but I understood it to be a little more wide spread than a few copies.

"What about the miners?"
"Miners?What miners"?

I have ran about 2000 frames through my D7000 and it has worked perfectly. Everything, including video, is spot on! I also think that video is a novelty feature that really shouldn't be implemented in DSLR cameras. Because do you buy a video camera to make stills? So if there is some video bugs I really wouldn't care.
redtippmann 1 year ago
I have two bright white pixel that shows up both on the LCD and the video file output from my D7000 regardless of the ISO (I see it easily at ISO 100) - but I don't see it with stills output. This is the same regardless of what lens I use (Tokina 11-16, Nikkor 35 f/1.8, Sigma 50 f/1.4, and Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 vrii). I got the camera to shoot stills, so it's no huge deal to me, but as a consumer, it is disappointing when the video performs worse than my Canon S95.

Plus, if this wasn't a REAL problem why would Nikon be releasing a firmware update to address it.
z000z 1 year ago
@keltontrey I call bullshit since NIkon stated awhile back (years ago) they would fix dead pixel on camera's under warranties if they are a problem.
Heck i had an issue with a D2x and hot pixels in the center area. It was fixed.

Really?
