Yeahh.. Chungking Express.... well, as an ordinary Chinese who favor Bridgitte Lin, here's some of my suggestion: Peking Opera Blues, New Dragon Gate Inn (1992), Red Dust (1990), and The Swordsman II.
Interesting. But the author definitely missed many other great ones between 1934 and 1990s. Chinese movies stars from the old days were much more talented than Gong Li, Joan Chen, or Jackie Chen. If the author tries to be an expert in this field, he needs to get himself be familiar with the names like Zhou Xuan, Jin Yan, Bai Yang, Zhao Dan, Tao Jing, Wang Danfeng, Qing Yi, etc. Chinese had a crowd of stars in Shanghai similar to the Hollywood back then.
TIME, how can you miss any of Stephen Chow's great movies here. If there is a top 10 list of Chinese movies Stephen Chow's will occupy at least 5 of them. You ignorant fool go back to research some more before you pretend you know it all.
OMG Curse of the Golden Flower is by far my favorite asian movie!! i could go on forever about Gong Li as the empress, the costumes, the attention to detail on the set and the colors if you havent seen it - check it out you'll watch it a hundred times and it still wont get old
Not that bad list, although in my opinion there should separate lists for Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China because they all have different censorship and I'm sure there are other differences as well.
I agree that this list is pretty bad but alot of Chinese films havn't gotten much exposure in the US. Crouching Tiger was a must for a US list, it was very popular here. Then again Peking Opera Blues never even played in my area and I eventually had to buy copies of Days of Being Wild and In the Mood for Love just to see them.
This guy's an idiot. And Time magazine (with its grade 5 reading level) could only be important in the US. Dude knows little about film, less so about Chinese film. Typical American.
this guys a dumb ass, crouchin tiger hidden dragon? i know loads of films much better that which isnt here. wheres fong say yuk or chinese ghost story for example. no stephen chow or andy lau films either. my guess times shud use a chink to rate chinese films not a white dude
For a mainstream American film critic with a relatively ignorant audience, he did a pretty good job selecting representative films. Of course there are gaping holes and missing genres, but he only had ten slots. Imagine doing the same for American cinema? (Xie xie! :P
I mean he was the one that introduced the West with the Martial Art genre and changed how China makes its action movies and he only did it with 6 films.
None of Bruce Lee's films are in the top 100 Chinese movies, much less the top 10. He was influential as a martial artist and film star, but his movies were mediocre at best.
What about Stepehen Chow? The king of Chinese comedy, they completely forgot about him, Time definitely favors wu xia films. Other Wong Kar-wai films such as Days of Being Wild and In the Mood for Love are worth a watch as well.
My favorite film from mainland China: Chen Kaige's YELLOW EARTH (1984)
My favorite Hong Kong action film: Tsui Hark's PEKING OPERA BLUES (1986)
CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON was released in the year 2000 (and was given an Oscar nomination for Best Picture of the Year), not 2003, as the video says.
The Peking Dancers was amazing,in addition to the traditional things,it describes the mens' relationships and feelings more than a lot of other moviesg with mostly action.

Richard, you got the 'Bei jing' pronunciation pat down. However, it's pronounced as 'sheeay sheeay' (xie xie) as compared to 'shay shay'.

Though the plot and art directorship was brilliant.
