these styles are designed for training, If you want to learn how to use in real battle, you need special codes from the teacher, That's the way of ancient masters protect their private skills. you cant use these styles without the codes.
@tranglomango i agree kung fu is getting worse because of wushu, but this form and the guy who's preforming it is tradtional stylist. even though it's "fancy" the moves are applicable. a lot of "wushu" forms have useless moves though
@airforceallie I would make the case the most traditional forms have useless bullshit too, that doesn't stop students from believing everything that comes out of their Sifu's mouth however...
@tranglomango Wushu is just a broad term for Chinese martial arts in just about the same way Kung Fu is a broad term for most Chinese martial arts, Wushu means martial arts and Kung Fu is just referring to one's skill...
@Collinmrandomnumbers Kung fu has actually nothing to do with Martial Arts, it translates to Energy and time. So it applies to anything that takes time and energy to do , for a extended duration , I.E. training. Whether its Ballet, Music, photography, painting etc....... they all have Kung Fu. Just some really basic knowledge for all you fine folks :) wu shu means Martial Technique, thus the common lack of understanding of the application of the technique in Modern Wushu.
@Collinmrandomnumbers Nice play on words, trollboy. If you actually read my entire post you would understand the meaning. Lol, I have actually trained in Martial Arts I.E. Kung Fu , for close to 10 years so I have a damn good understanding of the chinese philosophy of kung fu. So feel free to insert your foot in your mouth again sir.
@Collinmrandomnumbers Im talknig about my post, Kung means Energy, Fu means time. Literally the meaning has nothing to do with Martial Arts, you do understand the concept of the meaning of a word correct ? I am talking about the literal translation of the two words. So what is your point aside from the fact you don't understand ?
@SavageInsight you're right, and it only adds to people's notion that these arts are just to look pretty. people see these swords and think more negative about chinese martial arts!
@jeffdoeskungfu i've heard he does that in every movie! but where i read about that specifically was in the "shaolin king of martial arts" tv series with wu jing (remake of the jet li shaolin temple films). wu jing and xiu xiangdong had a really hard time fighting him!
With perhaps an exception with the Scottish great claymore (weapons trained by personal experience, not finesse), you do need personal instruction. That that said, it is sad to consider that people believe swords are intended to be whippy, or that in China's relative unbroken history, kung-fu has perservered in one way or another, but there is no wide unbroken tradition of swordsmithing.
You cannot really learn anything from DVD or something alike, not in the right way, you need a master to learn from, everyone makes special mistakes and everybody has different body
everybody makes the same move in a bit different way, even though different ways may be right at the same time but for different people.
Kung fu is nothing to be learned from a video, and therefore you need a master, as well as with European weapons, but in kung fu you need it even more, please keep this in mind
Definitely true - for example, the quite awesome guy in this video could learn another sword form easily from a DVD. It all depends on your level and experience. If you don't have a 'trained eye' you can't see what's right and wrong in other people, never mind yourself but if you do have a trained eye and experience, you can check your own posture in mirrors and on video, and recognise your mistakes. For some people, especially wushu athletes, learning forms is nearly as easy as watching them.
What I am saying is that moves alone are good... but without ideas they are quite plain and may lack many things.
Briefly said: You need to understand what you are doing - it may look the same but the results will be different. The same move done with different skill.... may look the same, but the more skillfull may kill as the skilless may simply slide away doing no harm. I hope that it does suffice as an example. Also it doesn't mean that a master must have only killing fists.
@Roflosic Then the question must be, how difficult is it, in fact, to work out and understand the 'meaning' of a move? Does one really need a teacher to say 'This chop is for taking off someone's head' ?
well I am not going to explain things here. I am taught a good kung fu and I know that everyone does make mistakes in moves, even if those moves look so simple...
KUNG FU IS NOT ABOUT BEING STRONG BUT ABOUT BEING ABLE TO USE YOUR BODY (too much of muscles means reduction of the overall dexterity... dexterity and technique > strength)
It might seem his "skill is crazy," certainly he is very athletic, but lets see him do the same form with a historically shuangshoujian before we pat him on the back...
@myshirtgoeswtf Its a lazy way to provide multiple languages on mainland vcds and dvds. they put a different language on the left and right stereo channels, when you are playing a disc disabling one of the channels leaves you with the language you want.
wow he's good guess thats why he's a master :P love the music in the background too :D wish i had a school near me! :P I'd go take classes right away :D:D
That is a fake sword yes. It's made for performace, but the techinques are there. One could create a sport that is similar to other types of swrod sports like fencing.
im sorry and i know im going to get alot of thumbs down but its realy not that hard to do this its actually pritty easy. again sorry if i sound like a over onfadint jackass :(.
hmph, the execution of the form looks easy so you can spend the more difficult aspects focusing mentally on the timing, possitioning, and proper energies. as far as the "fancy" moves in this vid, it has practicallity. im putting it in my favs
i guess the sword technique in this video looks easy, probably becuz of practical sake...when in real battle, i doubt there is a need for any fanciful moves...as long as it works, even the simplest strike will be as deadly as a poisonous snake...
@addblades1 True. It relies on a series of very basic stances and movements and very similar to a staff form. Once a practitioner stops being intimidated by the quick movements and length of the sword its very easy to interpret.
Wow, beautiful to watch. Definitely traditional not wushu.

What styles of Chinese martial arts use the two handed sword?
WingChunGeologist 1 year ago
@WingChunGeologist there aren't a whole lot that i know, but pigua quan uses the "miao dao" and mantis style uses it too.
airforceallie 1 year ago
@airforceallie Actually, the two hands sword isn't the "Miao Dao". They are two different swords.
marktl82 1 year ago
I quite despise learning from VCDs and there are many reasons for it, here are several of them:
- if you do any mistake the CD will NOT tell you about it.
- you have only one aspect of seeing the move - which is not sufficient.
- you are not told what is the aim of every move and how to think.

Nice Vid.
It's being played on stereo which means both tracks, Chinese and English, are being heard simultaneously.
I'd rather see it played with a heavier practical sword. That would certainly build up the wrist muscles!
Thanks for sharing.
