  • the pistol always wins.

  • @nebula25x ~ BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Awesome, I'm picturing Troops in full battle fatigues, with the Yellow Pages strapped to their chests... xD

  • I commented too soon. The vid stopped at 8:38. :-(

  • Cool vid!

  • great video and little demo keep up the good work, and i hope to see more soon

  • all u ignorant 45 buttlovers...... 40 wins

  • @MegaHairyass More like go with Speer rather than Hydrashocks. I'd like to see the difference between the two calibers using the same brand of ammo.

  • Enjoyed this phone book blasting video too...

  • Ok, stop with the arguing... This video definitively determines that BOTH a .45 cal handgun firing 230 gr ammunition, AND a .40 cal handgun firing 180 gr ammunition are BOTH very effective in hunting phone books. Sheesh.

  • Of course the .45 is better for self defense, but the advantage of .40 is the capacity as well as the little amount of weight saved over the .45. I'd never use anything for carry under .40...

  • I like. Do more

  • .45 is better for home defense, it did not penetrate as far because it had more surface area which means more resistance which is good. you do not want to shoot through people when defending yourself. You want the bullet to expand and do as much damage inside them as possible.

  • @Skormm totally agree...45 is the best for defense. over penetration would just cause too much legal problems in court if u end up hitting someone you dont want to hit.

  • There was a story on one of the gun websites about a guy who was diverted and delayed at a NJ airport with a gun he had checked. After spending the night, he was arrested the next day when attempted to catch another flight. He spent 10 days in jail for something he had no control over.

  • this is impressive. perhaps another study as such with .380 acp and a 9mm pistol just to see the same interesting factors. quiet please.

  • I am going to have to try the phonebooks with my .44 mag and .500 mag with various loads. I might need a few more phonebooks tho lol

  • I wonder how they would test against a hard cover.

  • Dear GunWebsite could you please test Tracer Ammo when ever you get a chance

  • @mitsubishidiamante

pretty tough, we are in the desert, it's dry here a lot

  • Definately a very informational video. I wouldnt mind seeing more videos like this.

  • My dad says that Hollow Points are illegal

I don't think he is right

  • @BlankPicketSign

NP are NOT illegal, I am not aware of any ammo that is illegal in the US

  • @GunWebsites

    BALLS YEAH!!

Time to buy me a Sexy Glock =^_^=

  • @BlankPicketSign in my opinion a guy who makes cat faces when they type isnt ready to own a gun

  • @ericsyutubeaccount

There is no Scientific Study to show Any correlation between Cat Faces and Gun Ownership =^_^=

Further testing an evaluation is required

    *strokes his Mosin Nagant*

  • @GunWebsites so far as I know JHP bullets are illegal in NJ and if you get caught with these type of rounds you will get get at least $1000 fine per bullet. They have to use for personal defense expandable FMJ round which basically do the same effects. Of course some laws and information can change overnight but you should check your state and local laws about this round.

  • @marfigtrainings I googled New Jersey Law. It looks like Hollow Points are legal to protect your home.

  • @marfigtrainings

Live and learn, I never heard that before, but I guess I don't talk guns with many people from NJ.. thanks for the info

  • @GunWebsites yep had a friend from louisiana pass through NJ and had a ccw but the gun was in trunk and ammo separate. was pulled over for a light out. when pulled over he handed the cop both DL and CCW and was immediately arrested and payed 50,000 fine and served 3 weeks. he only got off the felony charges because his lawyer talked the judge down.

  • @wo0dzm3n

    I doubt that story

Who pays $50,000 for being innocent ?

  • @GunWebsites the total thing cost him 50000$ after paying court cost and lawer. i was wrong before i called and asked today. still just for passing through its not worth it. i wont travel to a state that has laws like this. i also wont spend money in a state like this eaither.

  • @wo0dzm3n

    I won't argue with that

  • @wo0dzm3n It's not my intent to start a pissing match here but, either there's allot more to this story or it didn't happen. I don't believe it cost someone 50,000 dollars and three weeks in jail just for driving through NJ with an unloaded gun in the trunk of their car. Doesn't pass the smell test. What made the cop feel the need to look in the guys trunk? Almost sounds like a substance charge and lawyer fees to me.

  • @grizz474 when u hand the cop a ccw and inform him yes there is a gun in the car... like ur suppose to then he was searched and arrested.

  • I've seen other youtube tests of hydra-shoks and there seems to be shattering in them as well.

  • note to self, dont tape a phonebook to your friends chest and shoot him, it wont work

  • keep in mind.... the .45 was in service through all of the world wars and Nam..... the only reason why the feds went to the .40 is because alot of the younger feds cant hit shit with the .45 acp.

  • you dont want too much penatration ..... going through your target and hitting grandma down the street.

  • if you where using FMJ for the .40 and Hydra Shok for .45 acp the .40 will have more penatration. if your trying to compare penatration use FMJ rounds for both.

  • Fuck a bullet proof vest, ima where some phone books! LOL!

  • I tought u were gonna shoot with the phone books...

  • great video...Correct me if I am wrong, but this video shows me that the 40 has greater penitrasion (maybe do to its higher velocity) and the 45 acp creates a larger wound channel?

  • @cadet1037

thats the general rule, but not sure how well our test 'proved' any of that

  • .45 hits harder

  • 40 has more ballistics but is smaller in diameter.

  • 0.40 - 0.49, so between 0.04 - 0.13

define what you want to test

work out a method that tests only that

keep everything else consistent so you or anyone else can repeat

    do the test

present your conclusion based on the data collected

  • What no ninja glock in this one?

  • the .45 went through more of the phonebook. of course its gona loose more mass

  • so a .40 is more powerful than a .45 ?

  • @ kenyata

    no, the .45 is larger

  • That is no always the case, You forgot to factor in velocity. The faster an object travels, the more energy it has. Say you have a 32 grain .204 Ruger round that goes 4150FPS and a 22WMR round@1900FPS, the .204 Ruger will have 1224.06 ft.lbs of energy while the 22WRM will have 320.72 ft.lbs of energy. The same is true for any caliber. That is the difference between a 38 and a 357 magnum. Other than the numbers, you have to look at the ballistic performance where it really counts. Non ...

  • of this matters if you cant hit your target though.

  • This is a really complex question. Stopping power is determined by the ability of a bullet to create a temporary cavity in it's target. This ends up being a complex fluid dynamics problem that is hard to answer. For example, a large slow round will be unable to penetrate its target, causing tissue damage at the surface, but not beneath. A thin fast bullet will pass through like a laser and fail to create a cavity. The answer lies somewhere in the middle.

  • @kenyata The .40 penetrates deeper and packs a solid punch. The .45 is a larger round with a slower velocity but is considered a superior round to the .40 because of the size and weight. I have a .40 and have compared it with many 9mm and many .45's. I like having a faster bullet with a good punch.

  • I thought the comparison was interesting whether or not it simulated body guts didn't matter. Also, you had mentioned trash at the shooting site, I like to bring a large garbage bag with my gear so I can clean up after my fellow shooters and make all of us look like a swell bunch. I have seen an entire county forest closed to target shooting because of shot up trash. Thank you for all your good work.

  • @ theKGB65

Great idea with the trash bag, thanks for watching

  • Wet phone books do work better but the water jugs filled of newspaper is def the best solution i have seen compared to the jelaton. you will need at least 4 jugs though. I would like to see a multiple selection of 40 cal ammo to see which works the best.

  • so that's a 40 caliber and 45 caliber bullet just five less then 50 caliber right or am I wrong? I don't really know much about guns.

  • Yea but the 50 cal has alot more powder.atleast 350 grain not sure what the max grain is but 50 cal is just over kill lol.i love the kick though!

  • spelling is horrible wound*

  • Phone books, by far not the best for such a test. The density of the human body in much, much less, and expantion of the slugs would be totally different. The best I've seen so far is wet news papper stuffed into one gallon jugs. Also with a few layers of denim covering the entery point. Try it!

  • i agree but dont you think like a sweat shirt or jacket would be a better shell, since i dont train or shoot to would i go for vital areas, my point is jean jackets went out in the late 80's do you believe sweats a jacket or like a shirt would be better for exact comparison? i plan to conduct such a test

  • @ pjicleanair420

Good point about the choice of material

Link us to the test if you post it here !

  • dude for the record if you own a 40 cal, go to cheaper than dirt they are selling boxes of winchesters bonded ranger line for 18.75 for 50, they just dont come in ranger box but product id # is same as on video in my favorites about ranger bonded line, product number is RA40B, grab all you can i just picked up 4 boxes, they are a bonded t series best deal on the net and noone else has

  • Comment removed

  • I second the better scale- it is possible that the 40 actually lost more mass than the 45, but because of the rounding it appears the opposite. Also you can't compare powders really unless you confirm that both speer 40 and federal 45 use the same type of powder, which is doubtful. Would love to see the wet phone book tests.

  • If you guys are going to continue to do this stuff I recommend getting a reloading scale it will help you to more precise than the postal type you have and can measure down to 1/10th grain I have done this test also and got around the same results. good video keep em coming

  • Good point, I think the other scale we use once in a while might be better for small weights

  • put the powder back in the shell, fold the opening down, and you've got the best cap evar

  • Hey thanks for the video, my father and I are up to the same thing, but having trouble loadin the vids, keep on with the videos and let us know where you find some cheap ballistic gelatin!!!!

  • will do, link us when you get the vids posted

PS there are lots of "how to" videos out there to learn video stuff

  • lol, I don't know why I didn't think of that, thx!!

  • I only mention it because a few times now I've looked something up for way too long just to find there was a how to video waiting all along

  • so what you guys are saying is that i need to make a suit of armor that is three phonebooks thick!

    I'M ON IT!

  • only if you want to make a suit that won't let you move, and that will let the second or third shot right through..

  • It's called a Kinetic Hammer guys.

  • OK..

  • Well done guys, a real nice video with some interesting results.

Thanks a lot for posting this guys.

  • is it dangerous to set fire to that powder? :P

  • it would just flame up

  • keep them coming

  • this is so cool make more

  • thanks, looks like we are getting mostly positive comments so we will work on more testing ..

  • A Phoenix phone book can stop a runaway semi truck. Great vid.

  • LOL

  • great video, i hope you make more like this!

  • Great; common sense, practical demo. Clear down range? I love that. Too many cowboy/clowns post to the net. 40 will do most anything a 45 will. Both heavyweights. If you get past a passion for 1911's, 40 is probably the way to go.

  • LOL, thanks.. it's a habit after too much time on ranges

  • What I would like to see is a comparison of .40 in two or more different rounds. Gold Dot versus another JHP. Might give you more of the results your looking for. I like the video was very informative. Thank you keep up the hard work.

  • I would suggest milk jugs stuffed with shredded newspaper then filled with water. Its time consuming to fill then up but I would submit its a very realistic medium.

  • I do know a few dogs who love to shred paper.. that could save some time, LOL

  • Very interesting! Keep them coming please! Since it is carry ammo it would also be interesting to see how you carry, holsters and the like.

  • thanks.. we do have videos on the holsters, etc.. check out the playlists for them

  • so i'm guessing in all reality the 40 s & w out performs the 45acp pretty much.

  • well as people have said.. it's not really apples to apples here..

in this test this brand / type of .40 beat that brand / style of .45 ammo.. in these testing conditions only ..

so hardly a conclusive test ..

but I do feel good about it since I usually carry the .40 ..

  • Yeah i usually carry my M&P 40 the smith and wesson series of M&P are great guns they have really come along way in a few years.

  • Great presentation for a first go at it.

    Thanks a lot brother.

  • Thanks for all the positive feedback.. I guess we will put more thought into these kind of tests in the future..

There are a lot of options and ways to conduct them, so we are going to put some thought into how to do them as good as possible..

Any suggestions will be considered, so thanks again for all the comments / feedback

  • nice video....i think you guys should do the ballistics gel. its not as expensive as you would think...

  • interesting tests.....

    nice vid.....

  • great vid thanx for taking the time to post it..

  • great vid

  • You should shoot the same caliber from different companys to see what works best

  • I was impressed with the FNH 5.7x28mm phonebook test on yt.

  • Excellant video, interesting, anything about guns and ammo is interesting to me. I would like to see a comparison of .22 rimfire ammo..

  • me too the .22 is a very underestimated round and is acctually a pretty powerful round

  • Very cool!

  • Thanks for the phonebook demo 5*. I hear if you soak the phonebooks in water you will get a better view of cavity expansion and projectile expansion. I 5 gallon bucket full of clay works even better.

  • I'm not sure about it but .45 acp is kinda expensive right? could you tell me how much per shot? :P

    Thanks again for the videos!

  • I get mine for between $.30 and $.50 per shot.

  • Dude, they are all expensive except the .22 Check out my Range day video for a fun cheap gun to shoot (GSG-5)

  • Ja, good videos. Always interesting to see what actually happens to these bullets after they leave the barrel.

Personally, I'm more interested in what happens in unconventional materials rather than ballistic gelatin. Not too many naked gelatin perps where I hang my hat.

  • nice video, you should do more of these vids really interesting

  • bannanas vs oranges vs apples here lol fun video though

  • Also got use the same brand guns in the same size guns

  • Cool... how about phone books as body armor. haha

  • I thought of that when I saw they stopped both rounds.. but I suspect it would have hurt to have them stop rounds ON YOU, LOL

plus they are worthless after the second shot, the pages were just torn up

even a .22 would have passed right through after those first two

  • .40" out of a 5.3 barrel and a .45 our of a 4.5" barrel.

Not exactly apples to apples, but I don't expect you to buy another gun...

Maybe you could borrow a chrono for a better idea of what's going on with penetration vs caliber vs weight vs fps...
