This song was popular on the radio when I was going through one of the most deeply depressed periods of my life. I thought of ending it all, once and for all. But somehow whenever this song came on the radio, I was uplifted to the point I could go on for another day.
I bought the album and from then on, whenever the blues would come knockin', I'd play this song and slowly I'd shake it and move on. Thank God for Wet Willie music power and "Keep on smilin' til the sun comes out again y'all..."
My wife asked me to get some beach music together for the last day of school last year. She teaches at a K - 5th grade school. The music was for a summer theme for the kids and was playing loud as the parents were picking the kids up outside that day. I added this classic from my high school days and forgot about the "you're just hanging out in a local bar and wondering who the hell you are" part. Went over like a lead balloon........oops. I don't get to pick the music this year!
Wet Willie was not one of the more popular southern rock bands but I think they were great.I found out about them from a Charlie Daniels song"the south going to do it again".Their music has a funk feel to it but not on this song.
This is my favorite song. It reminds me of sitting in this one old bar in St. Louis, when I was 23, married, having an affair. It was what I remember what I played on the jukebox to keep on smiling!

@LesPaul4689 Carry on my wayward son, There'll be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest. Don't you cry no more. It was A hard way to spend A youth but a lot of those brothers are here now, seek them out! their understanding is the tonic that will allow you to heal. Know too that these days, we know they blamed it on the warrior, but it was our government who did wrong. God Bless and heal you! war is hell is only half the story, so is living with it. Love from the people.
Could some of y'all mosey over to the Front Porch Republic blog? Because there you will find some people who could tune in to some of the old things you and I miss about neighborliness and about America NOT being an empire (which is not to say being an international doormat for people to wipe their feet on, okay!). Read the essays of Wendell Berry, read Bill Kaufmann. There is still hope for America. For foreign policy, Andrew Bacevich. Come home America!!
My bro and family just left on a Delbert McClinton cruise on Holland America from Ft.Lauderdale and Jimmy Hall is a featured performer along with Raul Malo (former lead singer of the Mavericks)....damn I wanted to sail with them...good tunes.
@LesPaul4689 You keep on smiling brother. Were smiling with you. Its guys like you who have allowed me to sit here and enjoy the freedoms of this republic. Thanks. A lot.
I was a "supposed" security person hired by the local gymn, for an outdoor "festival" around '76 near Troy, NC. We ended up drinking most of the beer we we suposed to be guarding, Marshal Tucker never came out of their bus in the pouring rain to play, and thousands of people trashed the stage in the rain. Wet Willie was the last good band to play in the rain-they were dedicated partyers & players back then-
@ironmaiden6ification At 14, Most of the kids I know would love to smoke A reefer to any of 'em. and because the time is between 4:19 and 4:21, and probably because " The last one's gone already" and cause you can't take it home or mom will smell it, "she went to college and she knows, man!" SEE Smoke two joints!
Friend of mine said that he was hitch-hiking in the rain once in Norfolk, Va., and this car pulls over, it was Jim Hall! This was wayyyyyyy back in the mid-70's. Keep on Smilin'
To all the rockers-i lived in the Blue Ridge in the 70's,Wet willie,Marshall tucker.Allman Bro's.Emmie Lou Harris +that butt kicker shine and that all american home grown made for excellent times. Wish I could take you'all on that fabulous times...
I was a young turk when this came out, but even then I knew that I was being drenched in a magical wave of incredible creativity. It was definitely a better time. We actually enjoyed each other; what a concept. Pre-Reagan was sweet.
@bibsrenza You know, that last sentence that you wrote is dead on, and what i've been thinking for a very long time. Not really the political aspect of that thought, at least not directly. But you are one million percent correct. Pre-reagan. Pre-Reagan was a people that were relaxed and loved VW bugs, now they're uptight and drive BMW's. Pre-Reagan was a time where you would stop and talk to your neighbor, now it's you can't be bothered. I could go on and on. And it's not getting better
Thanks for understanding. Sometimes it is hard to reflect on where we were in relation to where we are. Ronnie and his troops fooled a generation of Americans to believe the country would be better off if we put ourselves first. Our collective soul has been damaged. Maybe beyond repair. In the end, it is all about people. I like the VW bug reference. Can you remember meeting total strangers who smiled and shook your hand? People in the 70's were quick with a joke and a kind word
It is better to have rocked and lost then never to have rocked before. Seriously, it is probably inconceivable to imagine, but we grew up in a warm time. There was a mutual respect and togetherness that has vanished. Now we have Wall Street, tea-baggers and the NRA: everyone is too busy beating their chests and being tough guys.
@getdrunkgethi420 You drank Ronnie's kool-aid, didn't you. You are a prime example of the ugly American. Thanks for being exhibit A. Go back to your rifle range-tough guy.
@getdrunkgethi420 - No America, where have you been? Hippies as you call them do not hate freedom, you are a fool. Do you even know what you are talking about really? Who can imply that one loves freedom and in the same sentence disrespect human dignity and the right to life! And how can you slander with words what you so proudly display in your log in name, really, "Get Drunk Get High", what a hypocrite! Proclaim a belief in one thing, but, totally do not follow it!

The 2X's I was subjected to "it" my # was over 200. Imagine! My father, George W. Carroll
decorated /WWII vet flyer US ARMY air corps/both "theaters" ie: a carrier in the Pacific
and out of Southhampton England.... THE Slaughtr? the Battle of the Bulge.... "Bomberder take control"
His brother told me why I and my brothe had to go upstairs when "12 O'clock High" came on TV.

I was a young turk when this came out, but even then I knew that I was being drenched in a magical wave of incredible creativity. It was definitely a better time. We actually enjoyed each other; what a concept. Pre-Reagan was sweet.
bibsrenza 1 year ago 2
@bibsrenza You know, that last sentence that you wrote is dead on, and what i've been thinking for a very long time. Not really the political aspect of that thought, at least not directly. But you are one million percent correct. Pre-reagan. Pre-Reagan was a people that were relaxed and loved VW bugs, now they're uptight and drive BMW's. Pre-Reagan was a time where you would stop and talk to your neighbor, now it's you can't be bothered. I could go on and on. And it's not getting better

@PlanTonto
