Yep, it would appear that this series was created by a bunch of 60/70's LSD addled ex-Hippies who thought it would be funny as fuck to scare the living shit out of kids. Me being one of those kids. I'm 38 as I post, and still have problems coming to terms with this 'kids' program. Think it was that that Blue Lion, Rory. He seems to be the leader, with his massive head and small legs. Never-the-less, the drumming dog is cool (kind of reminds me of Reni, from the Stone Roses, for some reason).
yeah this tv show scared the shit out of me as a kid too i could watch glen micheals cavalcade all the way thru .... no problem but this tv show was fuckin freaky
Rory rory tell us a story, rory rory tell it like it is, well you muppets it's time for another Tory rape and pillage of the country, scary evil blue fuckers just like me........
I liked the show but had a book of it...an annual I think...there was a picture of some ghosts chasing the animals...gave me nightmares for months..lol
I used to watch this to the point that I pestered my parents into taking me to see them live! Was a little boy of about 4 or 5 maybe. Just watched this clip now and, Christ!, it's terrifying!! What did I like about this!? The lion will give me nightmares NOW, let alone when I was that age. What were my parents thinking of letting me watch this stuff? If I showed my kids this they'd have nightmares.
Its the eyes, and the virtually unmoving mouth of Rory the lion that is freaking me...

I used to work at Westminster city council in the late 70s and early 80s as a painter and decorator and when I was there I worked with the blue friendly Rastafarian lion who’s name was Alvin Christie he also did the music to a Sunday morning show called babylon. Which was for ethnic persons and he can be seen playing when the program starts. His main band was called “inner force” they were quite big in the westbourne park area of London.

Eeek this always gave me the fear as a kid - plus they were like a scraggy and cheapskate version of the Banana Splits. I agree about the Blue Lion..found him particularly disturbing.
One of my earliest memories is escaping from my pushchair in Boots the chemist when i was two years old, turning a corner to be greeted by somone dressed like the blue lion. screaming, running back to pushchair a very traumatised child and never watching the bloody programme again! Never got over it! Now, where's my medication!
I found the original source tape of this footage after years of searching and i actually ended up getting in touch with 2 of the actors (Bev and Steve, thanks guys) who put me in touch with a retired Yorkshire TV employee who gave me the studio tape containing this episode. I encoded it to dvd and avi and posted it in a few places on the net. That was 5 years ago and i'm glad to see it has been circulated. I still have the original tape from which this came but thankyou for sharing this :)
@eleven38 Me too! It scared the shit out of me when I was a kid then I saw it for the 1st time in years on a Ch4 top 100 kids programmes. It came on the screen and I froze! LOL
@redm0zzy I saw the same programme - a couple of Christmases ago! First time I'd seen it since about the age of 3 and I too had a regression moment - I burst into tears!!!!!
This program scared me too (but I always loved it enough to stick around) but kind of sat there staring at it open mouthed so damn curious as I beleived they were really alive and strange versions of people I would meet one day.
I was usually behind the sofa screaming and crying at The Evil Dead cinema tv trailer instead when I was a kid or the 'Electricity Kills' public information warning ad. Fun times!
I'm called Rory -"Rory, Rory tell us a story" taken from the show. i must ahev been 4 or 5 when this was on - more polished in my memory than I se it now.... Not too many people remember when I ask..... Great stuff!
This so traumatised me as a child. I used to hide behind the sofa when they would intone 'Rory Rory Tell us a story'. As an adult. I hear it in my head in a frightening slowed down way, but it probably wasn't! I was fine with Dr Who though...
Evidence at last thanks to the web!! I don't suffer from a delusional disorder after all...This really existed, but nobody I ever ask has ever heard of it..Ahhh. Nostalgia ..
OMG! I remember these guys. I went a concert of theirs and they came down off the stage and when they came near me I just screamed my head off. Still find the blue thing freaky now, and I'm 36!
well, this is the first time ive seen these guys for about 30 tears. My mates dont remember these lot who were on tv in the afternoons, i suppose it was only me who wagged school to watch this , the sullivans and crown court. Those were the days!
I want to start a campaign for this show to be remade and brought back to TV. You HAVE to keep the oversized animal heads, but imagine them singing some of today's songs - I mean how cool to hear Rory singing Snow Patrol or something.....BRING BACK KWACKERS...BRING BACK KWACKERS.....come on, join in..........
I can remember being force fed this at lunchtimes as a young child and all the time yearning to watch the banana splits instead. In fact i wouldn't be suprised if Bingo from The splits hasn't tried to sue the drummers ass for stealing his look.
Sadly, I have heard that this first episode is the only one now in existence - all the rest have been destroyed many years ago. What a shame. One of my favourite shows when I was a kid. Rory and Boots quite simply the most hideous things to hit the telly.
