  • Rory and Boots quite simply the most hideous things to hit the telly.

  • Yep, it would appear that this series was created by a bunch of 60/70's LSD addled ex-Hippies who thought it would be funny as fuck to scare the living shit out of kids. Me being one of those kids. I'm 38 as I post, and still have problems coming to terms with this 'kids' program. Think it was that that Blue Lion, Rory. He seems to be the leader, with his massive head and small legs. Never-the-less, the drumming dog is cool (kind of reminds me of Reni, from the Stone Roses, for some reason).

  • first live band i ever saw

  • I watched The Thing back in 1982 and this was more scary. It's the lion. Is it a lion? Is it Stamford The Lion?

  • Aslan fucked by hypothermia!!!!

Rory came back to me like an acid flashback, no wonder I grew up with emotional issues.

Love the fact he's taking the piss out of a mule. Look in the mirror you dead-eyed freak.

  • legendary...started playing guitar coz of these guys ...now 39yrs and still playing for a living

  • i had nightmares ... after i saw them live.. and the poster on my wall came to life,,,, it was the blue lion ...!!!

  • yeah this tv show scared the shit out of me as a kid too i could watch glen micheals cavalcade all the way thru .... no problem but this tv show was fuckin freaky

  • Rory rory tell us a story, rory rory tell it like it is, well you muppets it's time for another Tory rape and pillage of the country, scary evil blue fuckers just like me........

  • As well as this whole episode (this is just a clip) I have their album transferred from vinyl lol

  • I saw them live at Abbey Park, Leicester, must have been 1979/1980.

Scary stuff to watch but they sound ok on record!

  • First "band" I saw live! Honestly, Aberdeen Capitol, couldn't tell you when, I was tiny.

  • @mumu23k

Me too. Isle of Wight, probably 78/79?.

Was beginning to think it was a dream until I saw this.

  • I liked the show but had a book of it...an annual I think...there was a picture of some ghosts chasing the animals...gave me nightmares for months..lol

  • i used to love the theme tune...animal kwackers.....animal qwakkers....bungle...roady...twang....and boots

  • I used to watch this to the point that I pestered my parents into taking me to see them live! Was a little boy of about 4 or 5 maybe. Just watched this clip now and, Christ!, it's terrifying!! What did I like about this!?!? The lion will give me nightmares NOW, let alone when I was that age. What were my parents thinking of letting me watch this stuff? If I showed my kids this they'd have nightmares.

Its the eyes, and the virtually unmoving mouth of Rory the lion that is freaking me...

  • I was scared of it too, but still watched it, I have an annual somewhere too

  • This used to give me nightmares as a kid but I loved it. It's easy to see where ideas from the Mighty Boosh come from ;)

  • Im SO pleased that I am not the only one who found Rory the Lion absolutely terrifying

  • I FUCKING LOVE THIS. I want the .mp3 :P

  • I have their minatures somwhere

  • Eeek this always gave me the fear as a kid - plus they were like a scraggy and cheapskate version of the Banana Splits. I agree about the Blue Lion..found him particularly disturbing.

  • i remember this Cant remember their names Think it was Bungo, Rory, Twang and Boot

  • The Mighty Boosh!!!

  • @raheemhosein Rudi and Spider, lookin for the NEW SOUND..........

  • omg i rememer seeing these live too

  • what the fucjk LAWL

  • Rory rory tell us a story !! Went to see them live in the Apollo in Glasgow.one of my first memories !!! 77/78 i think.

  • One of my earliest memories is escaping from my pushchair in Boots the chemist when i was two years old, turning a corner to be greeted by somone dressed like the blue lion. screaming, running back to pushchair a very traumatised child and never watching the bloody programme again! Never got over it! Now, where's my medication!

  • OMG this is horrible ...

  • AWESOME! loved this show ;-)

  • I used to love this show as a kid. Looks a bit bloody crap now though.

  • bastards evil. affected me for life

  • The costumes look much more tacky than I thought at the time.

  • I found the original source tape of this footage after years of searching and i actually ended up getting in touch with 2 of the actors (Bev and Steve, thanks guys) who put me in touch with a retired Yorkshire TV employee who gave me the studio tape containing this episode. I encoded it to dvd and avi and posted it in a few places on the net. That was 5 years ago and i'm glad to see it has been circulated. I still have the original tape from which this came but thankyou for sharing this :)

  • that fuckin blue lion scared me as a kid, ITS FUCKING EVIL, look at it!!!

im scared now, 30 years later

    arghhhhh

  • Yeah, I used to scream and cry!!! My mum stopped me watching it in the end!!!!!!!

  • I agree, it was the lion that gave me nightmares!!!!!

  • @eleven38 Me too! It scared the shit out of me when I was a kid then I saw it for the 1st time in years on a Ch4 top 100 kids programmes. It came on the screen and I froze! LOL

  • @redm0zzy I saw the same programme - a couple of Christmases ago! First time I'd seen it since about the age of 3 and I too had a regression moment - I burst into tears!!!!!

  • @eleven38 thats so true pal

  • @MsSue1993 indeed lol :) i came back to comment on ur reply and its looking at me again arghhhhhhhhhhh help, its evil !!!

  • @eleven38 I'm glad to hear it wasn't just me! Used to scream at my mum to switch it off :P *cringes*

  • @eleven38 ha ha late reply but same for me, i saw these live in gravesend kent had a poster on my wall...terrified me ha ha!

  • Hahahaha, whats that thing on the left meant to represent?

  • Oddly catchy cover!

  • JFredUK that was well funny what you said.

  • What an acid flashback eheh!

"Animal Crackers, Animal Crackers, Bongo, Rory, Twang & Boot...". I used to watch this after school (in the 80's) IIRC.

Was CERTAIN it was called "Animal Crackers" but there you go...

P.S. LOL @ wakkij: "Rory, Rory, Tell Us A Story..." - nice one, chap. ;)

  • I was beginning to think I'd imagined this programme. Uk's poor version of the bananna splits.....glam rock animals!

  • I used to love this show! thanks for reminding me it was not the same as the Banana Splits - I think the memory had blurred into one weird show ;)

  • Creepiest. Kids' show. Ever.

  • I loved this show! That's a fantastic version of an old wartime song by Bing Crosby - ask your grandparents :)

  • Very creepy. But nowhere near as creepy as The Mini Pops.

  • You can tell it's not live. The lip movement doesn't match the words. (0;}

  • The guitar playing doesn't match the sounds either.

  • @JFredUK doesnt stop Cheryl Cole!

  • The tiger 's chord progression is very sloppy lol

  • Rory Rory tell us a story. Rory Rory whats it gonna be?

  • this is amazing

  • This was some creepy stuff as a kid.

I used to stay up on a Friday night to watch Dracula with Christopher Lee in it without any problems but this blue lion scared me pooless!

  • Used to have the album, this track was on it. Loved the story at the end.

  • It's the original Mighty Boosh!

  • a cross between the junglies, banana splits and slade fab i remeber this i wasnt scared of it though

  • The drummer looks like one of the Banana Splits!

  • this programme scared the living shit out of me as a kid and i hid behind the sofa when it was on,

what on earth were they thinking lol

also talking of living shit has anyone noticed that this song sounds a bit like my chemical romance's teenagers(scare the living shit out of me)???

  • I so know what you mean.

This program scared me too (but I always loved it enough to stick around) but kind of sat there staring at it open mouthed so damn curious as I beleived they were really alive and strange versions of people I would meet one day.

I was usually behind the sofa screaming and crying at The Evil Dead cinema tv trailer instead when I was a kid or the 'Electricity Kills' public information warning ad. Fun times!

  • Bizarre! Can`t believe I used to watch this as a kid:)

  • loved this when i was a kid,no wonder i grew up to be a disturbed individual. seem to remember Twang had a flying V guitar though.

  • Didn't scare me when I was a kid . . . scares the pants off me now though!!?

"Rory, rory tell us a story" - god, that takes me back!

  • Cant believe I have just found this.

My dad was bongo the dog.

That could quite possibly be him

  • Still scares the crap out of me :)

  • I used to watch this in the 70's!

  • Wow, I wondered if footage of this would still exist. Somewhere at my parents house i still have the Animal Kwackers annual...

  • I'm called Rory -"Rory, Rory tell us a story" taken from the show. i must ahev been 4 or 5 when this was on - more polished in my memory than I se it now.... Not too many people remember when I ask..... Great stuff!

  • Boy this takes me back to when i was a nipper in the 70's...

  • Thats Roy Wood and Wizzard surely!!!

  • scared the life outta me as a kid!

  • i saw them 2 wen i was little, scared the hell outta me!

  • yeah but he does have lovely legs.

  • Roary is really scaring me now!

  • my god!forgot how disturbing they look!

  • I saw these live in Stoke on Trent

  • Ah man I so loved this show. EXCELLENT post

  • i had their album and went to see them live at the civic theatre in doncaster.

  • WTF these guys must be on drugs LOL

Uk answer to the banana splits

  • is it me or does the mangey old lion look like madonna

  • ...What the hell??

  • ..and if that isn't guaranteed to fuck kids up, I don't know what is...

  • So it was a bit like The Banana Splits - but it gets the Yanks back for copying the Beatles with the Monkees.

  • Ahh wasn't the 70's a great time for children's TV!

  • Rory Rory tell us a story...

  • I love this.I love animals in drag. Ta-ra!

  • I was scared of this as a kid...and i'm still scared of it now.

  • Me too! Rory sends shivers down my spine.

In fact I'm hiding under the desk now, but somehow i'm glued to watching a piece of my childhood.

  • When was this, I didnt remember it until now.... Its definately a bit scary.

  • Yep this traumatised me too as a 5 year old!

  • This so traumatised me as a child. I used to hide behind the sofa when they would intone 'Rory Rory Tell us a story'. As an adult. I hear it in my head in a frightening slowed down way, but it probably wasn't! I was fine with Dr Who though...

  • This used to be on Thursdays at lunchtime when I was very young. The blue thing (Lion)? terrified me and seeing this again now i can see why!

  • I went to see this live at Bedworth Civic Hall. Sweeeeet!

  • Rory, Rory, so sweet and smiley

    Let's sing a song in a rub-a-dub stylee !

  • Evidence at last thanks to the web!! I don't suffer from a delusional disorder after all...This really existed, but nobody I ever ask has ever heard of it..Ahhh. Nostalgia ..

  • Partly responsible for my 2 nervous breakdowns - there is some culpability - without a doubt.

  • So lodged in my memory ! happy days !

  • Rory, Rory, tell us a story, story. Tell us what it is!

I had all the albums as well!!

  • it's the way the costumes looked which scares children... admit it, its freaky.

  • omg did british children really watch this im 30 and im freaking out those things are scary

  • I watched this as a child and never felt scared. How can you be scared of a big old softie like Rory who sings and tells stories.

Not like the evil looking brutes that feature in so many computer games that children play today.

  • OMG! I remember these guys. I went a concert of theirs and they came down off the stage and when they came near me I just screamed my head off. Still find the blue thing freaky now, and I'm 36!

  • well, this is the first time ive seen these guys for about 30 tears. My mates dont remember these lot who were on tv in the afternoons, i suppose it was only me who wagged school to watch this , the sullivans and crown court. Those were the days!

  • i remember meeting these guy's in southampton at the age of 6 , i freaked!

  • More scary now than it was back then! "Rory" the blue thing (lion?)freaked me out! Very, very odd!

  • Great show I used to love this when I was a kid still got the double lp as well. Bring back kwackers.

Don't know what the fuss was about it being scary i never was.

  • I want to start a campaign for this show to be remade and brought back to TV. You HAVE to keep the oversized animal heads, but imagine them singing some of today's songs - I mean how cool to hear Rory singing Snow Patrol or something.....BRING BACK KWACKERS...BRING BACK KWACKERS.....come on, join in..........

  • I can remember being force fed this at lunchtimes as a young child and all the time yearning to watch the banana splits instead. In fact i wouldn't be suprised if Bingo from The splits hasn't tried to sue the drummers ass for stealing his look.

  • I always thought i was going mad as i remembered this but none of my friends did........thank god for YouTube!! I am sane lol

  • plus animal kwackers is soooooooooooo cool

  • very good but it kept on freezing

  • Sadly, I have heard that this first episode is the only one now in existence - all the rest have been destroyed many years ago. What a shame. One of my favourite shows when I was a kid. I remember an episode where the tiger lost his boots and they sang Tiger Feet - genius! I always wanted to be Rory!!!

  • I still have an LP of theirs somewhere.

Rory Rory Tell us a story Rory Rory tell us like it is

  • I went to see these live many years ago it has just cracked my ten year old up how easily i must have been to amuse

  • Excellent!
