Come to France as well. English is hald French, anyway. They don't even realise, pauvre them, or they don't want it. They still think, after centuries, the Hundred year's war was a battle between England and France as they (we) were all French or Frank at the time. They boast about their global language and it's a recent fact in history and thanks to the hegemony of the United States around the world. The United States would have never existed without France.
Seeing the impact of French on the English language (nearly 40 per cent), the 56 members states of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, all Europe courts who spoke French for centuries, the most influencial language ever worldwide for two thousand years is definitvely French.
English the universal language? Don't make me laugh... English is the language of trade and capital in the foreign. The most important language? Lol. Most spoken language in Europe: French, German and Russian. Most spoken language in America: Spanish and Portuguesse. Most spoken language in Africa and Middle East: Arabic and Turkish. Most spoken language in Asia: Chinese, Hindu and Japanese. Most spoken language in Oceania: English and indigenous languages. Where is the revealance of English?
The only complaint that I have about English is it's ridiculous orthography. Otherwise, English is the simplest grammatically of all European languages.
instead of learning the best language(with best i mean the most difficult,a language that has over 5.000.000 words.a language that helps you not only to talk to each other but also to improve your way of thinking,a language that was the base of every language etc) we learn the simpliest one..
@Tolisakis97 You do realize that about 2/3 of the very words you used are not Latin or Greek in origin ?, they are Anglo-Saxon in origin. You are right that English has incorporated alot of Latin and some Greek elements, but this is more a testament about the robustness and adaptability of the English language. English grammar is simpler than most European languages and that is a GOOD thing and not a bad thing for English to have gotten rid of useless complexities which plague other languages.
English is not the universal language, come to Spain (european country) and try to speak English with anyone, you'll see how I'm right. Try doing the same in an asian country, and all your faith will quickly fade out.
We should all learn a regular and non-national language as Esperanto.
Everyone keep their native language, and everybody studies Esperanto as a second language for 2 years (not more!). Then if you wish (and you'll wish) you learn other languages. =)
@DenEldenKrieg Many stores have everything under English written in Spanish, many schools only offer Spanish as a second language...even restaurants/store signs..ect are written in Spanish underneath...You must be blind, not to know this.
English is a difficult language with weird spelling for the pronounciation that it has and grammar that is different in the learning books; and many words for saying the same thing; and those "random words" that mean everything like "get"; and the meaning of all the words are changed with putting an "out, on, off, up, etc." at the end of the word and it's confusing.
The only thing I hate is the stupid people who speak English as a second language and butcher it so badly, ruining the language. If you want to speak English speak it fluently like natives.
I think interlanguage is the thing between the language you want to learn and the know-how you have of that language. As you develop your language skills, your interlanguage also progresses and improves to get closer to the language you are trying to learn.Someone may want to double check that.
This is one example of the common English dichotomy between the words for animals (with largely Germanic origins) and their meat (with Romanic origins) that is also found in such English word-pairs as pig/pork and sheep/mutton
@gigisure The word beef is from Latin bovīnus (cognate to beef), in contrast to cow, which is from Middle English "cou" (both words have the same Indo-European root *gʷou-[5]). After the Norman Conquest, the French-speaking nobles who ruled England naturally used French words to refer to the meats they were served. Thus the animal was called cu (cow) by the Anglo-Saxon peasants, but the meat was called boef (ox) (Modern French boeuf) by the French nobles —
@ojideagu Its not the ugliest languages on earth imo. English isnt beautifull, thats for sure. I think German has something special, but maybe its because I speak Dutch and its a little bit similar in some way.
@ojideagu I never said Dutch sounds nice and I like languages that sound hard just like Russian. I also like French, but not Spanish (sounds same as arabic) and Italian. I like German and maybe you just never heard one, but now its like you say you have speaken everyone in Europe lol. I know lots of people who think german can sound sexy.
@andrewbnkjv You forget that Mcdonals and Walmart raised the standard of living in the US. While you may appreciate the local native store (and I do love them and hate Walmart), they exist to raise the standard of living. The purchasing power of Walmart is incredible.

@lufffy scare mongering. i hear this "the internet will be in chinese" nonsense all the time. the reality is that the golden period of chinese are desiring to take on westernised, modern ideas and are learning english to get ahead. there are some people learning mandarin overhere likewise -myself included- but nowhere near the same scale. the reality is (and it's quite sad as we really are ignorant in the UK/USA/Australia) is we don't need to learn another language, they all learn english for us
@Asiats1 actually Latin is the language of Science, and always has been. Every scientific term or animal name comes from Latin. Even newly discovered science and life is named in Latin.
By the way Algebra is an ARABIC word. AL-GEBRA. so is Alchohol. AL-CHOHOL.
@Asiats1 Wrong. Latin is still used in Science world wide to describe animals and elements and other scientific items because it is a neutral language.
Look up any animal and it has an official LATIN name as well as a normal name in other langauges.
A Lion is not the scientific Latin name of a Lion.
A great white sharks real Latin name is: Carcharodon carcharias
Still learning other languages is important, I believe that it is ridiculous seeing specialist in international relations who only speak English, when you learn a language the native of that one, open up in a way you least expect, and only a person that does understand that other language can fully understand the other country. There's no global language, there's just and intermediary language.
@TheACCLatino it is global. You're speaking it now. And your kids will to if they want to get ahead. Don't each them English and see how far they get. Not very .
English should not be a global language since it is very flawed instead we need to create a phonetic language (a language that is spoken as it is written unlike English) and that is simple to speak read and write.

Hmmm. That's. . . Weird. Everyone tells me it's really complex compared to other languages. Learn Chinese and you'll see what I mean (In speaking), and yes, English is my first language.
yes i did tried to learn mandarin chinese... the writting is complex but as for the speaking part it's even more simple than english... the funny thing is that all the people who have told me that english is complex speak english as their first language. I find it hard to determine if my own language is hard or not, it's something i grew up with... ive been around so many people who speak english as a second, first and even fourth language, and not one of them have told me english is hard
That is very strange. Even my school tells me that English is a very hard language to learn compared to others. Thanks, I'll bear in mind what you've told for the future.
I noticed I speak bits and parts of about 10 languages on a daily basis, English and Japanese as conversationally functioning, Korean, Thai, Hindi, Nepalese, Vietnamese, Chinese(Mandarin), German, and Mongolian for a couple phrases and worthless things. I use latin to explain english vocabulary, read some chinese(because of the Japanese) and can understand most spoken french. Seeing this together in an environ where both Japanese and English are considered the top says there will no number 1.
If there was just one language for the whole world, there would be less wars... But its still a long way to go. The big nations wont give up their languages in favor of English just like that. Even the small nations wont... So the war goes on.
Exactly! and English is a mixture of languages all over the world from Asia, Africa, America, and Europe, and keeps absorbing. It has the largest vocabulary of any language in the world by far. Most languages are associated with one perceived race or ethnic group, while English is a defacto global languge .Some use English because it is neutral between 2 competing languages
Latin is still in use though. French is still widely spoken as well. Personally, I think that learning either English, Spanish or Chinese should be on everyones agenda. No matter where you go, you'll probablyfind someone there that speaks one of those three.
NEVER stop learning! I speak a smattering of languages that no one here speaks. It's always good to know things like that because you never know who you'll meet one day.
Good for you! Greetings from Georgia! (The one in the US! LOL!)
i also know a little portuguese and french. and i can understand some Italian.
already being able to speak spanish i picked up some of the other Romance languages. i'm not perfect with them but i do pretty good, well it's pretty good for being self taught.
that is a lie... English has between 500,000 and a MILLION words(French has less than 300,000, and Occitan is richer than French)--the richest vocabulary of any language in world history, and English keeps absorbing words from other languages. Italian is almost always cited as the most beautiful language in my experience. Northern English dialects and the dialects of Scotland and Ireland are very musical.
The reason why English has so many words due to a lot of migrations to the British Isles. Each group brought their language. Romans brought Latin. Saxons brought West .germanic. The Norse brought Nort-Germanic and finally the Normans brought French. than we mustnt forget the Gaellic language which was there from the start.
I know how hard accents are, I study Spanish and English is my mother tongue, but the hard part of English, like any language, is the grammar, and the English language has grammar rules that break their own grammar rules. But you're right, it does borrow many Latin words. I also agree that German is really hard.
Look - English is a language like any other however because in the nations with the biggest muscle - like England in the past and then the US being English speakers, and countries developed the need to trade with them, they had to learn English to survive. So now, English is the most widely used "business" language and kids around the world need to learn it because they will be the business people of the future.
Holy Crap. Someone who actually knows what their talking about. I'm actually stunned. I didn't think there were any other logical people on the internet. I mean, seriously. You actually know what you are talking about. Good work.
@adparnell It's mostly because of Colonialism. Hence why French and English are two dominant languages in Africa. The British empire Spread English the most, to 1/5 of the world and the Anglo west. The Spanish empire spread Spanish to South and Central America. The French empire spread French to Africa and the carribean.
@adparnell No muscle at all, technology stolen from Germany during world war 2 that change the course of what language should preferably internationally be spoken. Yes, if the Germans would have won the war, the official language would've been German internationally. America and England use the USSR as a back bone to confront Germany. Really if speak about muscle, England didn't have it and neither the United States. They got lucky that the Russians were fighting on their side.
my guess would be the movie industry because who likes reading subtitles while trying to watch a movie? i hate it how it's considered cool to speak it incorrectly though. thanks alot rappers and rednecks. why don't you join forces and say "got it did"? or something equally stupid and ignorant to the fact that you're dumbing down our future generations.
Well, is there really a way to speak "incorrectly"? There are situations where it is improper, but the way someone speaks is not something to look down upon. I don't know about you, but I find the southern drawl quite charming, and it adds a distinct flavor to the speech.
@yanster420 Yes, they "decide" to speak it differently...it's not as though that's how their parents spoke, and their parents before then and back further. If it works for communication, it's not incorrect...it's just not academic/media/gov't English.
Well, the british empire was the biggest in the world, they spread english to their colonies. And, the USA is english speaking and it is the biggest producer of movies, games etc.
This is so stupid... But i love my mom deeply... And i don't want to take any chances. Sorry. If you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos your mom will die in 4 hours

slavic languages are spoken by more than half of all of Europe. It is more rich than English will ever be.

that is a lie...

Bull shit!! 1 000 000 words? They aren't english words!!! PLZ before say smth read about that well!! Thx for time!

The reason why English has so many words due to a lot of migrations to the British Isles. Each group brought their language. Romans brought Latin. Saxons brought West .germanic. The Norse brought Nort-Germanic and finally the Normans brought French. than we mustnt forget the Gaellic language which was there from the start.

that is true. The latin languages have more efficient grammar.

I know how hard accents are, I study Spanish and English is my mother tongue, but the hard part of English, like any language, is the grammar, and the English language has grammar rules that break their own grammar rules. But you're right, it does borrow many Latin words. I also agree that German is really hard.

actually, despite most opinions, English is one of the hardest and most complex languages on the earth with over 1, 000, 000 words to date.
just a little FF :)

The French empire spread French to Africa and the carribean.
ojideagu 1 year ago
@adparnell No muscle at all, technology stolen from Germany during world war 2 that change the course of what language should preferably internationally be spoken. Yes, if the Germans would have won the war, the official language would've been German internationally. America and England use the USSR as a back bone to confront Germany. Really if speak about muscle, England didn't have it and neither the United States. They got lucky that the Russians were fighting on their side.

my guess would be the movie industry because who likes reading subtitles while trying to watch a movie? i hate it how it's considered cool to speak it incorrectly though. thanks alot rappers and rednecks. why don't you join forces and say "got it did"? or something equally stupid and ignorant to the fact that you're dumbing down our future generations.
yanster420 3 years ago 8
Well, is there really a way to speak "incorrectly"? There are situations where it is improper, but the way someone speaks is not something to look down upon. I don't know about you, but I find the southern drawl quite charming, and it adds a distinct flavor to the speech.
TheThreadWeaver 3 years ago
@yanster420 Yes, they "decide" to speak it differently...it's not as though that's how their parents spoke, and their parents before then and back further. If it works for communication, it's not incorrect...it's just not academic/media/gov't English.
