Not an unusually bumpy landing for this difficult approach....Any landing you could walk away from and not damage the plane was a good one at Kai Tak......(that's why the airport was closed in 1998).
Stop the vid at 0:08 and you can see the windsock coming into view on the right side. Crosswind is at about 5-10kts. Windsock gets picked by the dissipating wake of the MD11.
So the problem wasn't the crosswind, but an overshoot of the centerline, which happened regularly; the approach did not leave much room for error.
So all in all, this should have been a clear go around. Especially when you realize that you will touch down significantly off centerline.
This is most certainly a very poor landing. The plane was not on a stable approach and a go around should have been executed long before he attempted to correct his drift with left rudder application. How can anyone consider this a professional landing, even with heavy crosswinds this is a massive display of poor airmanship.
correct inputs for landing with a crosswind are ailerons into the wind, opposite rudder. pilot had wrong inputs on approach and touchdown (watch the rudder). at least they made it down in one piece...
abu dhabi int airport pilot went too fast there were no winds when the plane touched down it went back into the air and landed again and for wen it was before yesterday thanks for the question :P
@airbus94 lol the pilot bumped the landing... it happens and will happen again there is no need of a go around at all... Would be stupid to burn unnecessary excess of fuel at environment and companies cost...
I think they should have performed a go-around as soon as they were losing the centerline. But it's easy to say so.... sitting on a chair in front of a PC.
that runway is notoriously difficult to line up with, throw a crosswind in there it makes it even more difficult. He really smacked it on the pavement but at least he kept it under control.
i seen so many video,s of hong kong and i see the planes are always landing from this side and having hard time linning up with the runway , anyone knows why they did,t use the other side of the runway , i mean why do they have to land from this side if its challenging why not land from the other side ?
it is because of the crosswinds and the tail winds most of the times planes would have it hard coming in with the tails winds and were in a bit if trouble if they had a late go around
@airbus94 if the left or right main gear collapsed it would be goodnight charlie. 10% of fuel on board for alternate landing means if it did collapse or the tyres popped on either side it would roll over and big fire!!=death and mayhem
You're kidding right? The right and center gear are off the runway. They almost strike wingtips. And I'm sure the gear and tires needed replacing after this.
If this is your idea of a good landing, please remind me to never fly with you.
I don't think the pilot did a bad job, the camera angle tricks you he was aligned the whole time fighting the crosswind and the reason why he didnt go around its because at the last second a gust of wind blew him off course
this approach is notoriously difficult but this plane was feet away from a serious disaster. the captain should have known this approach was bad and executed a go around. And you are wrong, just because you walk away from a landing doesn't make it a good one. Damaging an aircraft and putting passangers in a dangerous situation when it can be prevented by simply going around and reshooting the approach is not good. Sorry, you're wrong, Rageoff77.
@AUBLUEOAR I think the first officer had the airplane upon short final, as you can see in the video at the right hand bar.
I don't speak Italian but seemingly the captain exclaimed: No!' just before he idled the throttle, which usually is done by the pilot in command at the the final approach.
From the brief look i got at the face of the co-pilot, he knew he f*cked up.
@imanofficerable He said "Piano" that means "gently". However watching the other video I think the co-pilot was on the first hours of patent because he mistook the words "landing gear" in the checklist and the officer pointed at the handle that was already down, and they still had the autopilot engaged in final
The pilot in the 747 is probably like oh shite this could be bad, I do like the Md-11 though even though it gets put down alot for safety, as longs as its maintained and has good experienced pilots, its fine
That is at Kai Tak (Hong Kong) the approach to rwy 13 is famous and difficult so it is probably why the MD11 made that bad landing + it could have been whindy!
(I think that there is a video here on Youtube filmed from the cockpit of an Alitalia MD11 that lands at Kai Tak in that way)
he was way off the centerline

@aavgoustis Yeah, MD-11 is known for being pretty unstable on approach when compared to most other planes because of its different design.

teodo787 Nope that landing is actually perfect for a crosswind landing and in Hong Kong too. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that...
