its not bad on your back at all if you start out with low weight on concentrate on technique. kettebell technique is simple to aquire but key to producing results. it in fact strengthens your back and glutes very much so. if you want buns of steel kettebells are a good way to do it. been doing kb's for 3 months and already have seen excellent results.
Some people have commented that it's hazardous for your back but I think that this is not a problem. If you keep your back blocked (keep it from moving, or in isometric) it shouldn't be a problem. It is exercise for this area directly also because it works this area. I do a variation of these on a situp board.
yah, i am afraid he isn't using your local gym's ab machine therefore it must be bad for your back right? i broke my foot and my wrist and have been using kettlebells for rehabilitation because they are safer than isolation exercises. i can assure you i have better posture from using them and my back is stronger than it ever was.
Wow that looks like it would kick your ass.

Proper form and technique is how you prevent yourself from being injured while exercising. If you have neither, expect to see your doctor more often.

its hazardous because there are a lot of people teaching improper technique. any kind of strength training is dangerous if done with poor judgement
