  • Thumbs up if you suspect Skrillex was the one who disliked this.

  • i love playing this on guitar such a good song

  • Is it just me or is Lady Stardust by far the finest tune of an exceptional record that is Ziggy Stardust?

  • I for one think this version is better X3 I love listening to raw demo versions. Usually you can hear more emotion.

  • What a find, a raw class version of a work in progress.

  • Nice and inspiring always to hear the works in progress..cheers for the upload, Xen Smithy.

  • Awful nice

  • "..and I smile sadly for a love I could not obey..." so true to me right now, I still loving her. what can i do? just cry and sing this song of darkness and disgrace.

(sure she wont ever find this comment)

  • He sings "Ohh how I lied, when they asked if I knew his name" instead of "sighed", interesting.

  • @milescend ..Exactly..switches to camp androgeny or resignation on the final release from a more mysterious secretive undertone of LIED ...Good observation..I missed that until you pointed it out! cheers!

  • and he sang all night...

  • thanks for this!!!!

  • Beautiful

  • There should be no issue about the voice. It's Bowie pure and simple. And it's only a demo ffs!

For those who can't fathom it... this is what singers actually sound like when they're not doing much more than recording an acoustic jam session, with mimimal twiddling of mixing desk knobs, NO auto-tuned vocals, over-dubs or special effects taking all the 'grit' out of the song!

  • So cool!!! Huge fan and I never heard these demos. Are there more??

  • @jhiken on the same album, ziggy stardust also has a demo! it's great.

  • @jhiken Look for Ryko CDs. They all have bonus tracks - demos and alternate versions - and they're dynamite. Even though I have many Bowie albums on vinyl dating back to the 60s, I bought all the Ryko CDs and haven't regretted a single purchase.

  • @anonyms404 you're an idiot. you may not care about the creative process but it does exist and demos never sound as good as the finished product that is released to the masses.. why do you think its called a demo? do you know what a demo is? maybe you should look it up because if you dont want to hear a demo and instead want to hear finished product dont click the link of a song that says original demo in the title.. do you get that? and this doesnt sound like crap, your ears are broken.

  • this song was about marc bolan for people who didnt know that

  • What a voice!!

  • david's voice is heavenly in this track!!! thank you for sharing!! quite sublime!!

  • I LOVE DAVID BOWIE!!!!! in all the ways!!!!

  • Marc will live forever

  • Certainly different from the album, a bit more "space" sounding, and I'm glad to be able to hear this, I like hearing how songs are developed "behind the scenes".

but the album version, I think, works better with the flow of the album, because it sounds more "Burlesque" than "Alien"..as though Ziggy is communicating through a simple drag performer..

  • I far prefer this version of the song. This demo and Five Years are my two favorite Bowie songs. He's just terrific.

  • excellent performance

  • I just downloaded this mp3 at mp3iifffy. Check that site out - its sick. Google mp3iifffy

  • Chill out sweetheart, your manhood isn't on the line over this.

I've seen Bowie do this live and this is a fair representation of what it's supposed to be.

Now be a love and give us a kiss.

  • you best be trollin.

  • Anyone else hear two voices over lapping in parts of this?

  • @ometec Think it may be Bowie and Ronson.

  • You're in a small choir, nearly alone.

Ever been to a transvestite cafe / cabaret in the 70s, 80's? Ever?

This type of non smooth rendition is right on and this particular version you are slamming is spot on, actuallt too good and THAT's why you don't like it.

  • That is not David Bowie singing , good impression though!

  • @tarkstar99 No, it really is him. It was on one of his albums.

  • @tarkstar99 This is demo, which was released on album Ziggy Stardust - 30th Anniversary Reissue, published in 2002.

  • the voice is supposed to be "gravelly" it's part of the song

  • to you

    nuff said

  • It doesn't sound like crap, you hear like crap

  • Very genuine rendition, like the song itself.

  • en. wikipedia. org/ wiki/ Demo_(music)

  • @zanisham9

    RIP to Fen

  • THIS IS THE OPERA VERSION,

THE GODLY VOICE OF A UTOPIAN

THAT SO FILLS UP THE SONG

IT CARRIES ALL WITH MERELY THE PIANO

& IT HONORS THE MAN WHO INVENTED

    PATHOS FOR THE 70s

    THE NAPOLEON OF ROMANTICISM

    MARC

    EROS, NOT YET ALL DEAD

  • That was some speech my friend

  • Wow. This is the best comment I've seen on Youtube. Really made me smile and feel proud to be Bowie and Bolan fans :)

  • @JTerrible63 Good heavens. You should have been a Butlins Bluecoat mate! The kids would have loved all that.

  • I just came across this by pure coincidence, but I have to agree with you. I have come to realize that if people like a singer, they will be enamoured of everything he/she does, no matter how awful it is. If they hate the singer concerned, no amount of talent will be able to convince them otherwise. Forget objectivity, it is just about non-existent! That's just the way people are ;-)

  • @expatbritingermany i dont believe that because i myself have many band crushes and love alot of stuff they do but then some of it i hate.. and will not give credit where its not due.. so.. maybe youre talking about some people and not all.. because if im this way then there has got to be atleast.. a couple thousand in the world who are the same.. because we as people are just not as individual and different then others as we would like to think. peace

  • @TheThroney - I think I know what you're trying to say. All I meant was it is difficult to be objective - whether it's your partner we're talking about, your mother, or your favourite singer/band. We are all influenced by personal preferences, which results in people raving about performances that are less than perfect, and others giving the thumbs down sign to excellent performances. It's part of human nature ;-))

  • I think he was just testing out different vocal styles. This is not his best vocal trial - glad he changed it by the last cut. Great to see how he envisioned the song structure as that is the coolest thing about this. Fantastic to hear an early trail of this classic!

  • Rest assured, there are plenty of live performances showing him to be just fine without "studio help"; and besides having a crisp sound and good seperation courtesy of the studio and some sound effects on some tracks for artistry's sake I really don't think he actually has his voice touched up in the studio.

  • I actually prefer this version.

    Just saying.

  • the fact of the matter is that he sounds great in here. the mixing and mastering could be better, but its a demo. i do sing and i'll tell you that it's so hard to sing how he does here and you saying it's sub-par only shows you have absolutely no repsect for the creative process.

  • you must have an amazing voice if you think these vocals suck... seriously?

  • What's up with the Bowie vocals concerns?

Maybe he doesn't sound as good as the original song but absolutely EVERY artist is going to sound a bit different if they make a acoustic version of a song

And this is a demo as well

  • What's wrong with the vocal? Sounds great like usual to me.

  • I love this version. Every singer doesn't sound incredible without a bit of studio tweeking. Come on.

  • this guys right.

i too am a massive fan of bowie but this aint too good.

  • You are a Twit ! Not the nice definition of one , the other one .

  • anonyms:

    1) obviously, you don't know what you're talking about or all that much about the making of music, try singing like that yourself

    2) this stripped down version kicks mad ass, thanks

  • Bowie Kills here !

  • youtube for some reason isn't allowing this video to load right now.

    that pisses me off.

  • I believe it is Ronno playing piano on the album track.

Obviously David plays on this 'demo' version.

It's amazing to think that only a few chords and some words make such a masterpiece. Simple and brilliant.

For Marc Bolan too... God Bless him.

  • damn, great version of this song. Bowies voice is in full perfection!

  • demos are so much more pure then final versions, i love this one so much =D

  • better than the final cut methinks

  • Can anybody show me how to play this masterpiece on the piano, go great!! Ziggy rocks!!!

  • It's not on the regular ziggy stardust cd, it's the anniversary special edition one.

  • Yes, I have it on CD.

  • thanks for this post--love this song!

  • I ripped it from the Ziggy Stardust cd with bonus tracks,b-sides, and demos like this

  • thanks
