Actually, England left America alone in that vast continent. In RL the distance was part of the problem. England put restrictions on America's trade, so everything had to be imported from England at high cost. No manufacturing was allowed either. The last ditch negotiater the Continental Congress sent to plead King George agreed to pay the taxes demanded, if England would lift the costly restrictions that were crippling American life. Needless to say, the King dismissed the offer.
