  • I just love this piece.Has to Brahms finest work.It is so uplifting.Makes the heart and soul sing

  • Solti (maestro) has a sure hand and foot in following the genius' pace.Solti's reputation was based on genius, uncurbed by the passing of decades.

  • oklahoma all state violin players: 2:23 3:03 you're welcome:)

  • clearly one person is not a fan of Brahms' delicate art of the sarcastic "thank-you"

  • I am in this beautiful city right now (Sept. 2011). Thus, I was inspired to comment. I would agree with previous writers that the Poles have done a nice job rebuilding the city after its destruction during the war. The university hall where the piece had its premier is actually not that big, perhaps 30 feet wide by about 120 feet long and full of marble. I would love to hear a period performance of the piece in that hall. Nevertheless, the CSO did an excellent job on this recording.

  • I like your short anecdote 'Jackwchoi'!

  • My university's student orchestra is preparing this sheet of music for the nearly competition, and I am one of them. Wish we can get a good prize!

  • @schumacher2004 what's the name of your orchestra? i'm also from the netherlands and my student's university orchestra is also preparing this. do i know you? :P

  • 6:30 is the best part

  • Looks like someone clicked the wrong button :' /

  • @Milenko00 i always wonder if this apparently stupid design of putting these two buttons so close is on purpose by youtube.

  • Pure Genius.I love the music of Brahms!

  • I miss playing an instrument, hearing this brought back memories.

  • it's my city Wroclaw ouverture ;-)

  • comment dire ? c'est magique

  • YES! 100 likes, 0 dislikes!

  • Part of this is used in the opening bars of Elmer's Bernstein's Faber College Theme from the movie "Animal House." If that isn't a great parody of the academe, I don't know what is!!

  • @pinkdogavenger yeah, I love this piece, but when that theme shows up I can't help but think of Bluto and the rest of the gang at Delta House and have a chuckle.

  • 94 likes and no dislikes. aww yeah :)

  • and he took the finale too slowly i think. but i love how he made sure you heard every single part from every instrument

  • i love this(: i think there could've been more strings in the beginning though, i think the balence was tipped to far in the brass direction

  • my chamber orchestra plays this and im in middle school also we are performing in six flags on june 3rd at around 10:30 A.M. if anyone is interested

  • Beautiful! :) This is a wonderful piece, and I'm playing it with my symphony orchestra, it's truly amazing how there are so many unique composers and works... :)

  • gr8 song

  • @jellybunxd You mean "gr8 PIECE"

  • I had the epic crash cymbal part in All-State Orchestra! Rock on!

  • THIS is music. not just throwing a bunch of beats together and autotuning your voice. no words, just music. not that words are bad, but this song doesn't need any(:

  • My high school orchestra is playing this piece. It's soo hard but I love it so much.

Violin 2 for the win! :)

  • thumbs up if your here because of all state orchestra in oregon

  • @tommy6564 all district in illinois haha

  • Thank the Almighty that this towering monument to the genius of Brahms is recorded for posterity; and that the striking directorial genius of Solti was applied to it. This performance is perhaps the most accurate and satisfying one of Brahms's music that I have ever heard.

  • Great performance, great sound (for a recording that old) and beautiful pictures!!!! Thank you for uploading this.

  • Now THIS is why Chicago with Sir Georg Solti were considered one of the best Orchestras in the world!

  • this is great! i'm playing this for an honors orchestra. CSO FTW! and basses are the best btw.

  • Best version I've found!

    GO VIOLAS!

  • finally!!! Academic played well!! We're playing it in school and ughhhhh its soo bad!!! This has renewed my love for this piece!!

  • Im usually not too fond of Brahms, but theres something about this piece,...

  • Thank you for this video, the comment and the explanations

  • Thanks for posting that performance on youtube! I have to play this along with the Firebird with the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra next week and this really gives me a good interpretation of the piece. The brass was really amazing in this recording. Great inspiration! Really like that huge jump in the tuba from low C below the staff to high C above the staff near the end of the piece....the CSO tubist really nailed it.

  • check out Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra - it's better

  • Funny how a British director has a better interpretation and understanding of German literarture than German director's?

  • 3:45 intonation glitch... didn't expect that from the chicago symphony

  • @k1llljoy Got any idea how high/hard that bit is??? Maybe you should join the chicago symph before you start complaining...

  • @Lyndybop I have every idea how high/low it is, being a violist myself who has played this piece twice with my university's symphony orchestra.

There's a line between complaining and noting aspects of the performance.. you don't have to be in the CSO to criticize.

  • Also watch Paul Hindemth's mid-'50s performance with the same orchestra. Already a great orchestra in a very unsentimental performance. One could drive by Hindemith's New Haven home and see him mowing his front yard in his t-shirt. Always a very practical man.

  • Lovely recording, and great slide show.

  • This is the best interpretation.

  • Thanks for uploading this wonderful video with the photos from Wroclaw (Breslau). Brahms composed this music as a thank for the honorary doctoral degree from the university of Breslau. The Poles have done a great job to rebuild the historic city and they keep its German roots in honor. When I once took a taxi to the university the taxi driver said: "a great university with six Nobel price winners". He referred to the German history of the universiy.

  • @fj5a017 You are correct on all of that except that he wrote the piece to make fun of them, because he didnt think he needed the honarary doctorate.
