I am actually touched by what the Garcias had done to the prisoners. In past, Philippine prisons were a sordid place of misery and suffering and chaos with gangsters all around. People from the outside cannot always emphatize for the prisoners, how difficult it is to wait for a time to pass for an uncertain future. But the Garcias just changed that. Let me tell you about the truth behind the dancing culture of Cebu. Here in Cebu, I've seen lots of young students (especially girls) who quit drop out of school to become entertainers (most notably dancers). They thought they can become rich and famous through entertainment....and then live happy ever after.

As it turned out, these young dancers ended up living hard lives (earning P300 per day, and in some cases per show). Some of them enter poverty and some go back to school over-aged.

Trade? Learn? That takes a bunch of money. Now, in the US, it makes perfect sense but in a country where schools don't even have enough books, prison education is not a priority. The prisoners can basically choose between food or books. I am pretty sure they would choose the food. You saw how crowded the other prisons are. I'd say the prisoners would rather have food, then more space. Education will probably been down the list.
