Race is mostly visible, anyway. For example, I "look" white while "biologically" I am not. Many people put more emphasis on physical features than actual ancestry. Italians and Irish were considered a separate race from other white people early in the 20th century, and now they are assimilated among whites.

In southern Norway the population of nationals of Arab decent is high, and they are naturalized Norwegians. Race is mostly visible, anyway. For example, I "look" white while "biologically" I am not. Many people put more emphasis on physical features than actual ancestry. Italians and Irish were considered a separate race from other white people early in the 20th century, and now they are assimilated among whites.

And another example: many of the Latino people may be "biologically" white or black, but we consider them a separate race- Hispanic.

@InternetViking Yeah, he has the tendency to drive over you with a semi-trailer. For good and for worse. I dont agree with him on several key issues, and in debate he will try to drive over the other even if he only has a go cart. Amazingly enough he often manages that as well, but not with impressive rhetorical results. His support of the Iraq invasion for one has led to many a youtube video with questioning rhetorics. But more then not his style is win.

we tend to identify with those who are like us. that being said most blacks will vote for obama and women will vote for hillary until, the voters hear the candidates views on the issues. at that point the opinions will change.

Here in Europe if you have a black parent and a white parent you are called a mullat. If you then have a child with a black the child is black, and if it was with a white he is white. It is all semantics as pretty gawd damn useless.

@supaglue Here in Norway we say "mulat". If I translate from our wiki, it says "from one darker and one lighter parent" (very translated). You are correct, the term comes from Portuguese, but has another meaning in Scandinavian. It is not offensive here, I have heard people use that description about themselves, and it is common in newspapers etc. I understand your point on cultural self-determination, but I have a Spanish relative, many many gens ago, as most people here (viking). @GnosticAtheist I agree to a point - however you can be both Norwegian and black. It is difficult to extricate ethinicity from nationalism and where the value of identifying one way or another lies. Perhaps that's a stereotyping problem with labels as a whole?

@supaglue Yes, obviously you can. I know several on a personal basis. My cousin is one (adopted) and I study with several born here or adopted. So it is not unheard of at all. In southern Norway the population of nationals of Arab decent is high, and they are naturalized Norwegians. It is more and more useless definitions, as "race" no longer holds much culturally important. Not in my eyes, at least.

@GnosticAtheist That's interesting to learn - I had no idea that Norway used the term in a non-perjorative sense - In Spain and the UK it is certainly considered offensive. I suppose the value attached to the particular language and it's connotations will always play a significant factor, when identifying oneself culturally.

@supaglue Indeed. I am checking the term now, and it is indeed not a negative. The shortest entry I have found is this: "mulatt -en, -er avkom av neger og hvit" (hereditary from a negro and a white [direct translation]). Remember that Norway does not have a specific racial history. It has been Caucasian until recentry, and as such the terms may seem racist, but they are not meant to be such. Terms as "nigger" is pejorative, while "neger" (negro) is the common for dark skin.

@GnosticAtheist - In what Country in Europe do people called someone born mixed race a 'mullatt'? I presume you mean the portuguese 'mulato', which refers to a half-horse-half-donkey offspring. Something tells me that could be found to be offensive. And of course, you miss the point that people have the right to choose their cultural identity as they see fit - so if you have a 'drop of black blood' (whatever that means), you are perfectly entitled to identify yourself as black and vice versa

If it's the black vote effected the outcome of the election in anyway, I'd like to see the logic behind it considering the black population in America in 2008 was 12.4% (only 13% actually voted) . White people make up 75% of the population, and are the only ones that can decide elections.
