@talkersgirl3476 fat. lol but he's been ridden a little bit this summer and we're starting to talk about breakaway or goat tying with him next summer. we'll see how he goes :)
@19twilightfanatic He fell in a barrel race competition around the third barrel with me and he caused a splint that was directly on his joint on his knee
@BestGoat You could have prevented that by reining correctly, I know every horse is different but the reason horses slip is because a combo of your position in the saddle and your horses head set.
@LuckyBuckyDucky I have a horse that's had his nose yanked off repetitively with a hackamore. A lot of hackamores are actually harsher than bits. Because my horse has been pulled on so much by his previous owners he is not ridden in a hackamore. I know a lot of horses who are in the same boat. A hackamore may work for some horses but not for all of them.
@Ninjasaurus321 NBHA came up with that form of placing so basically for ex. if the fastest run is a 15.0 that would win the 1D, and if you add half of a second to that time, that is the winner of the 2D, and if you add 1 1/2 second to the 1D winner, you'd get the 3D winner and so on and so on. If that's not correct then sorry! i'm pretty sure that how i was told that it worked, though.
it kinda looks like your horse is a chestnut in the sun but in the dark its a buckskin i was like asking myself is this a chesntut or a buckskin and i think he's a buckskin

@mightymouth4ever usally that means that your horse needs an extra boost. Try the bumper spurs? hey, if it's any consolation i learned some good tips from your video! i'm new to barrel racing, and i can take any tips i can get lol. so do you have any advice on getting the lead change right between the first and second barrel?
@Bestgoat you did a great job explaining how you barrel train. Obviously people are jealous because you are skilled enough to train your horses without a trainer. If all they do is bash you like they are then obviously they have nothing better to do. You did a great job! All those bitches can go to hell. Lol
Your saddle is so sweekey! And don't worry about those other people. Probably jealous because you train your horse and they have to ship them off to a trainer.
WTF yall! Leave her alone. She's not saying this is how you absolutely have to do it, she's just doing it to help in someways. Don't have to be so gosh damn rude. Whats wrong with people these days? Damn. Anyway, I Barrelrace as well and I'm sure many beginners find this at least a little helping if not more. Thanks.
Stop giving her such a hard time!! Read the title for once!! Do you guys not see that it says " How I Train to Barrel Race"?!?!? If you dont like the video, then why watch the whole thing and then leave a mean comment, this actually helped me, thank you =)
Why is everybody hell-bent on being so rude to this girl? The title says it all: "How I train to barrel race." She's not telling you what to do, she's showing you what works for HER. Everybody is different, I don't train the same way she does, but It does not mean that one of us is doing it the "wrong way." I'm respectful of her training methods even though they aren't the same as mine. So be nice people, you can voice your opinion and still do it in a polite way.
@chevygirl88 thank you :) that's the first nice comment ive had in months pretty much. i left youtube for a bit and then came back and holy crap everybody turned vicous it seemed. but thanks for having my back there. i appreciate it.
okay.....1st, you didnt teach us anything. 2nd, if you said we could do whatever..then why try to teach us your way. and 3rd, every horse is different and there is no way to teach how to barrel race...you have to work with your horse...and expeirence everything with your barrel racing and your horse.
@ccowgurl13 ok bitch thats exactly what i said. This is MY fuckin way on how i train to barrel race. i never said you guys what to do i just showed what I do and you guys are free to do what the hell you want. jesus christ you guys are so eager to pin me down.smarten up and get a fuckin life please. trust me, bringing me down is not going to make you feel better and im sick of all this critique shit. this video has helped a lot of ppl.too bad ur not one of them but i dont really give a shit.
@ccowgurl13 entertainment and some people want to know what techniques i used. duh. nobody ever told you to watch this video so fuck off. im done with ppl like you.
I ride english, but I want to do SOME western stuff, and I was wondering (since this makes the most sence to me) should I do barrel racingg? btw, love the video, and cute horse (; i subbed u
I Trained My Cousine`s Horse, And I Used Like, What You Did On This Video, And Now sHe Is One Of tHe Best Horses To Barrel Race With! I Wanna Say... THANK YOU! :D
Great video except the part about giving ur horse a pocket and then letting it get shorter as u get faster that just makes the horse learn to take ur pocket away and shoulder the barrel. U want to be consistent with ur pocket so they no not to shoulder the barrel over.
I've barrel raced for years, but I recently bought a new horse that isn't that good, and my sister went off to collage so I have to train my new horse on my own! Thanks for the tips! I'll see if they work for my horse! But they seem really good!
I see that you are neck reining.... Barrel racing horses don't neck rein! i mean they do in a sense but what you should be doing is picking up your inside rein up between your belly button and hip. you should use less hands and more legs. and i see your friend doing the same thing. you should try it.
@BestGoat i've been a barrel racer and instrctor for 40 years. i think i know what im talking about. you can be giving your horse mixed signals when you neck rein
well thats good and all im happy for you im still standing by my opinion why would you want to change it. its kind of a bitch thing to do. but dont worry about it, i haven't labeled you as a bitch...yet. but if you continue on posting know it all comments on my videos, then yes you are a bitch. sorry, its harsh. im sure you can take it. dont worry bout it.
@horzecrazy1 actually not if you do it right. There are articles on how people tend to shorten the outside rein when the neckrein, but its because they are unaware.
@horzecrazy1 you shouldn't if your neck reining correctly. most barrel racers do neck rein.if the horse is trained correctly and your signals are correct than it will work just as well.
I find your voice to be super familiar, but I'm not sure if I know you, lol. I gave 5 stars to this video, it's very helpful. I do have a question though. On a horse I'm working on for barrels, he likes to swing his hind end at the second barrel, making it WIDE. Would pivotting toward the the barrel help him sink his back end a little better so it's not so wide? I haven't ever had a barrel horse or anything, and it's my first year doing games. So I need all the help I can get.
@jayjaymar17 hes way on his front end then......when you do slow work back him before you turn and when you turn take it wide...make him break at the pole and round through his hip for you.......just make him turn it like that for a while and that should help......i would start by only trotting him then once he learns do it at a canter......big issue is to make him use his butt :)
Thank U! I am going to lengthen my reins: I went shorter and I think I am hanging on his face; LOL U don't have a lisp; if U have time coould U view "vccpres" (Youtube) and maybe comment? I have had this hot horse 2 mo. we are doing only trail work btwn runs to get calm; I have a back prob which might get in way; so appreciate any comments; I like your style!!!
I cant get my stuborn mare to sidepass, she just backs up or throws her head, And ive tried backing her up to a fence, and then she just moves around and doesnt side pass. What do u suggest i try to do?
get her to listen to your legs more by using them as you turn. also, release pressure even if she just leans in that direction. she'll catch on fairly quick and try to keep your commands as uncomplicated as possible. side passing is a difficult maneuver to teach and i still have a mare that cant side pass more than three steps and ive been trying to teach it to her for the past month. just takes time
@BarrelRacer955 try an assistant. we are training my mare to sidepass and it helps if you have someone on the ground doing the movements that you have been doing with the horse on the ground to sidepass while you do the movements in the saddle. my mare is still really green with it to.
When i walk my barrels i always stop my horse When her hip is lined up with the barrel, than back up and go around. Do you think i should be stopping her at a different point and if so why? : )
try stopping her when her nose is lined up with the barrel instead of her hip. this way, when your galloping towards the barrel, she will have less chance of blowing past it. by stopping her early like this, you are teaching her to slow down BEFORE the turn at not AT it. She should have more power in her turns and should make a nice snappy turn. good luck!
@RidinWildandFree when they buck, quickly stop him and spin him in really quick tiny circles. then, go back to the third, circle it, and try again. keep repeating it until he stops.
the bit question is impossible to answer. it really relies on the horse but i would recommend a two piece snaffle with shank of some kind. nothing too severe cause there is a lot of turning and stopping.
O ya. And by the way. How can i get my horse to move just her hind quarters over because i've tried doing it with my barrel horse and she wont do it. lol
GOOD JOB!!! i have a young horse and i can ride him bareback with a hackamore and do really awesome runs and he does it pretty much all by himself, but its totally different under a saddle!!
hey thanks for this video it really helped me and my horse we are both new to barrells and am sure this will help us nock a few seconds off. I see that some people have to critisize otheres horses it doesnt make them or there horses any better or faster. Thankyou
My Quarter Horse had a problem with running into the barrels rather than going around them i tried these tips and she went around finally! good video!
well there's no way you would be able to tell. this was me running him right after he recovered from an injury and with a lot of weight to lose and too bad i was holding him back.
i dont have tapes of him running full out. and he's had heaves for a year now. and im not sure you'll be able to keep up with us here. but hey. who knows. im not gonna get into a bitch fight with someone i dont know and really makes no difference to me. sorry. but hey. have fun with barrels and your life.
wow, my horse always cut me off on that damn second barrel! i tried spinning her away from it and she doesn't as bad anymore, i just have to keep workin' at it and i'm sure we'll be winnin em all! thank you soo much, all credit goes to you :)
my mare used to duct out before the second barrel too, and I talked to my coach and he said to practice the pattern both ways and do figure 8s around 2 of the barrels, and take her to different arenas. He said to do this bc they think they know the pattern but really they don't, and they are not listening to you. So doing these exercises will have them listen to you. This has definately helped me, she doesn't duct out anymore.
i <3 your method and i love dusty hes a dun!

If you dont like the video, then why watch the whole thing and then leave a mean comment, this actually helped me, thank you =)
twizzlertown 1 year ago 2

BestGoat 1 year ago
okay.....1st, you didnt teach us anything. 2nd, if you said we could do whatever..then why try to teach us your way. and 3rd, every horse is different and there is no way to teach how to barrel race...you have to work with your horse...and expeirence everything with your barrel racing and your horse.
ccowgurl13 1 year ago
@ccowgurl13 ok bitch thats exactly what i said. This is MY fuckin way on how i train to barrel race. i never said you guys what to do i just showed what I do and you guys are free to do what the hell you want. jesus christ you guys are so eager to pin me down.smarten up and get a fuckin life please. trust me, bringing me down is not going to make you feel better and im sick of all this critique shit. this video has helped a lot of ppl.too bad ur not one of them but i dont really give a shit.

Great video except the part about giving ur horse a pocket and then letting it get shorter as u get faster that just makes the horse learn to take ur pocket away and shoulder the barrel. U want to be consistent with ur pocket so they no not to shoulder the barrel over.

would be helpful if i could see more than the ground and the neck of the horse....

I've barrel raced for years, but I recently bought a new horse that isn't that good, and my sister went off to collage so I have to train my new horse on my own! Thanks for the tips! I'll see if they work for my horse! But they seem really good!
CelticTears101 1 year ago
I see that you are neck reining.... Barrel racing horses don't neck rein! i mean they do in a sense but what you should be doing is picking up your inside rein up between your belly button and hip. you should use less hands and more legs. and i see your friend doing the same thing. you should try it.
horzecrazy1 2 years ago
all horses should be trained to neck rein. its a basic skill every horse should know.
BestGoat 2 years ago
thats not what i meant... i mean yeah every horse neck reins but it is better for the horse to turn when you pick up the inside rein.
horzecrazy1 2 years ago
i disagree completely but its our own different opinions
BestGoat 2 years ago
@BestGoat i've been a barrel racer and instrctor for 40 years. i think i know what im talking about. you can be giving your horse mixed signals when you neck rein
horzecrazy1 2 years ago
well thats good and all im happy for you im still standing by my opinion why would you want to change it. its kind of a bitch thing to do. but dont worry about it, i haven't labeled you as a bitch...yet. but if you continue on posting know it all comments on my videos, then yes you are a bitch. sorry, its harsh. im sure you can take it. dont worry bout it.
BestGoat 2 years ago
@horzecrazy1 actually not if you do it right. There are articles on how people tend to shorten the outside rein when the neckrein, but its because they are unaware.
cowgirl22hannah 1 year ago
@horzecrazy1 you shouldn't if your neck reining correctly. most barrel racers do neck rein.if the horse is trained correctly and your signals are correct than it will work just as well.
marcieincooke 1 year ago
@horzecrazy1 not every horse neck reins. you have to train them to

So I need all the help I can get.
jayjaymar17 2 years ago
@jayjaymar17 hes way on his front end then......when you do slow work back him before you turn and when you turn take it wide...make him break at the pole and round through his hip for you.......just make him turn it like that for a while and that should help......i would start by only trotting him then once he learns do it at a canter......big issue is to make him use his butt :)
00horsecrazy00 1 year ago

BarrelRacer955 2 years ago
get her to listen to your legs more by using them as you turn. also, release pressure even if she just leans in that direction. she'll catch on fairly quick and try to keep your commands as uncomplicated as possible. side passing is a difficult maneuver to teach and i still have a mare that cant side pass more than three steps and ive been trying to teach it to her for the past month. just takes time
BestGoat 2 years ago
@BestGoat Ok. Thanks for the tip :D I will for sure try them.
BarrelRacer955 2 years ago
@BarrelRacer955 try an assistant. we are training my mare to sidepass and it helps if you have someone on the ground doing the movements that you have been doing with the horse on the ground to sidepass while you do the movements in the saddle. my mare is still really green with it to.
marcieincooke 1 year ago
i know what you mean!
I HATE holding a horse's head for him!
i try to MAKE mine move himself!
&& this really helped btw! :)
i never thought of the stopping idea.
brittanylovespumpkin 2 years ago
When i walk my barrels i always stop my horse When her hip is lined up with the barrel, than back up and go around. Do you think i should be stopping her at a different point and if so why? : )
TheMadiandSam 2 years ago
try stopping her when her nose is lined up with the barrel instead of her hip. this way, when your galloping towards the barrel, she will have less chance of blowing past it. by stopping her early like this, you are teaching her to slow down BEFORE the turn at not AT it. She should have more power in her turns and should make a nice snappy turn. good luck!
BestGoat 2 years ago
I will definatly use this on my horse=]

Thx for making this vid! I used some of these tips and it worked wonders on my mare! LOL!
barrelracer4lifecg13 2 years ago
how do you prevent your horse from bucking when running home??, mine does, and i got thrown the other day because of it.
also what bit would be best to use for barrel racing, and gymnakahna.??
RidinWildandFree 2 years ago
@RidinWildandFree when they buck, quickly stop him and spin him in really quick tiny circles. then, go back to the third, circle it, and try again. keep repeating it until he stops.
the bit question is impossible to answer. it really relies on the horse but i would recommend a two piece snaffle with shank of some kind. nothing too severe cause there is a lot of turning and stopping.
BestGoat 2 years ago
@BestGoat thanks.ill ust that.

O ya. And by the way. How can i get my horse to move just her hind quarters over because i've tried doing it with my barrel horse and she wont do it. lol
BarrelRacer955 2 years ago
put pressure behind the cinch with your foot and when she steps away from it release and reward her. take it one step at a time
BestGoat 2 years ago
i'm just starting on training my mare to barrel race, have any more pointers then you have in the vid?

hey thanks for this video it really helped me and my horse we are both new to barrells and am sure this will help us nock a few seconds off. I see that some people have to critisize otheres horses it doesnt make them or there horses any better or faster. Thankyou

1D where i live would blow you out of the water!
barrelprincess101 2 years ago
i dont have tapes of him running full out. and he's had heaves for a year now. and im not sure you'll be able to keep up with us here. but hey. who knows. im not gonna get into a bitch fight with someone i dont know and really makes no difference to me. sorry. but hey. have fun with barrels and your life.
BestGoat 2 years ago
thats really good . bending to what your horses need . alot of people need to think about that when they are training , including me sometimes lol
horseygal2033 2 years ago
wow, my horse always cut me off on that damn second barrel! i tried spinning her away from it and she doesn't as bad anymore, i just have to keep workin' at it and i'm sure we'll be winnin em all! thank you soo much, all credit goes to you :)
spicesbarrelracer 2 years ago
my mare used to duct out before the second barrel too, and I talked to my coach and he said to practice the pattern both ways and do figure 8s around 2 of the barrels, and take her to different arenas. He said to do this bc they think they know the pattern but really they don't, and they are not listening to you. So doing these exercises will have them listen to you. This has definately helped me, she doesn't duct out anymore.
