I like how you get to keep Exp when you die. It means you don't lose any significant progress, and is helpful especially if it turns out you needed to fight a few more battles before trying that boss fight. Aside from the Dragon Quest games, I can't think of many games that have this feature. Just Mario RPG and Final Fantasy 6.
I once went almost halfway through the game and died on purpose for the trick. It turns out that it doesn't work for party members who hadn't yet joined.
By the way, Mario's Pad acts as a free inn. Just head into the house and talk to the mushroom on the table.
I also like how you're fully restored after every boss battle.
