Mangini may beat portnoy in technique but the way MP constructed the drum parts within a song is what makes him unique. He has no problem playing in odd time, and he doesnt overplay with a bunch of complex rudiments. This is the reason I like his playing style. Mangini is awesome but a prefer portnoy anytime.
@wierderthanwierd JP and DT wrote all the drum parts for the new album with a computer program and sent them to MM for him to learn. All Mangini is doing is playing drum parts written by someone else. Look it up, it's true. Don't get me wrong, I think he is a great drummer, I just don't think he has the creativity that Portnoy has.
@oxi2112 -this kind of comment has been constantly being repeated by everyone including you, even in other videos. cant you just wait for the time DT releases their next album? that we can determine if MM could write songs the way MP did, or not..
@Whyruss2 I'm not just talking about DT, MM has been around for 20 years floating from band to band recording other peoples music. When he's not doing that he's setting usless speed records and teaching at Berkley. (you know what they say about teachers). He may have the technical edge on Portnoy, but he couldn't hold a matchstick to his creativity!
@oxi2112 He specifically kept it toned down for his first tour (and the record) with the band. He and the rest of the band have acknowledged this on multiple occasions. Portnoy is good, but he's not even in the same league as the Genie...
@oxi2112 I guess we have to wait for the next album then ;-)
As for Portnoy - yes he was creative but not too much on his last 2 DT records. To say the truth - I'm glad he's gone. I didn't like the way he wanted to go with DT.
@oxi2112 dude it is nice that you love Portnoy so much. I liked him too. He had amazing creative skills, no doubt. But there obviously was a reason why He left the band. Now you have two choices to choose from: 1 enjoy the new Dream Theater with their new drummer Genie, or quit listening to them altogether and let the rest of us enjoy his ability to play anything Portnoy played, and to a 'T' I might add, As far as the music on the new DT, ask why there are so many slow songs, not a'Genie' prob!
@Hittman67: To many IMO. The rest of you can still enjoy MM while I leave a comments. I never said that MM didn't have the ability to play these songs, you're right he does play them well.( Though, I'm still looking for a version of The Count of Tuscany where the begining sounds correct). Hopefully on the next album they will give him some creative freedom and then we'll see what happens.
@oxi2112 He learned, recorded and toured with the band within the first 3 months of joining them, einstein...do we need to remind you he taught at Berklee, arguably the single most prestigious musical institution on the planet? he will blow your mind. In 5 years no one will even think of Portnoy's ridiculous growling numetal vocals any more...
@squitestubez Hey genius, do I have to remind you that while MM was "teaching" MP was out creating amazing peices of music with his own band!... Sorry guy, you can have all the music knowledge in the world, but without a creative outlet ...you're just a over qualified studio drummer. Oh, and I'll take MP "numetal" voice over JL shitty excuse for a voice any day!!!
@chrisbDTM I'm not whining, just stating some facts. Adrenaline Mob is ok, actually I prefer Transatlantic over them. Either way MP is still creating and writing, MM is not.
@oxi2112 Are you retarded? Do you really think that JP wrote all the drum parts for ADTOE? Do you actually think that MM just play what Petrucci told him? Fictitious Christ! You has to be the most stupid Portnoy fanboy ever!
@alushearo Are you a moron? Stop jerking off to MM video's for a second and go look it up, It's true. MM wasn't a part of the recording process, JP recorded the drums with a program called "Superior Drummer" and sent him the tracks, asking him if this was something he could play. And I'm not a MP fanboy,I enjoy lots of different drummers, just not ones that set useless speed records and play other peoples music for a living!! FF!
@oxi2112 Read my last comment again fanboy. I'm aware that JP wrote the SKELETON for the drums. Petrucci isn't a drummer, there's no fucking way that John could possibly came out with the drum parts of Outcry or those fills at the end of BAI. THEY already said that MM changed like 70% of the SKELETON.
I really haven't followed Mangini that closely before. But, he has incredible limb independence!! Check out the high-hat with the left and then the ride with the right! May seem elementary to some, but for the average joe, that's awesome!! It frees up the kit for you so much when you become able to do that at will. Incredible drummer!!
i really think that he is better than portnoy, at least on this song, sorry ...

@oxi2112 OC he is creative enough! It's just that the new album was nearly ready when Mangini joined the band.
