hetalia makes learning enjoyable and i can remember stuff. but when my world geography teacher says something it's like blah blah place you need to remember on test blah blah. seriously the class would remember hetalia. and then maybe that other 50% of the class wouldn't have Fs. i'm serious about that F thing. then again i'm in the class with the most idiots.
Lies. I -3 history, always have with all my heart. Then Hetalia came along. AND I learned ALOT more! Hetalia combined all of my most favorite things in the world.
What? No way. Of course it gets ppl interested in history! Well I have always looooooooooved history, but not so much of the details of Italy and other countries. Hetalia got me interested. Yay Hetalia! -3-3-3
Dude, I was into history then, and after seeing hetalia I became more into history. During lecture times, I would draw the and write the historical situation that was going on into what could have potentially happened in hetalia. My ending grade was a 99 ha! xP
i liked history before hetalia, and i still do. Yeah, you have to take every thing that happens in it with a grain of salt, but its funny and prompted me to write a term paper on the war of austrian sucession
As an undergrad I would like to say one thing from the student side: History is an amazing subject and it didn't take Hetalia to get me interested - it took amazing teachers and professors who actually knew how to make it relevant and funny. Teachers who are monotone and fail to bring the subject alive are the reason why I don't blame most people for turning to Hetalia; however it'd be nice if everyone did the 99% research it takes to get the full picture because Hetalia leaves out a lot!
dude, hetalia changed my Knowledge of world history. ever since i watched it, i always was so eager to study. now im in AP world geography and im always the first to finish all my work and test in like 5 minutes.
i love hetalia and in my technology and society class the other day the teacher was talking about england and americas tecnologys bout how bristans was more something i cant remember but i had to keep my laughs in.
...... Okay, here's how I know it has affected my friends in some way.
I once got a kid in my AP World History class into Hetalia.
As we sat there during a very LOOOONG lecture, a slide comes up about different renaissances and such in Europe, and my teacher get to one bullet point.
"...... Such as Italy and Holy Roman Empire. Because of this, an art retaliation of sorts was made..'
...I know that I got into Hetalia because I liked history, but Hetalia made me more interested in the histories of countries other than than the ones I cared about. I used to hate learning about stuff that didnt interest me, but Hetalia MADE me more interested....I actually read my history book for fun now...so suck it non-believer! >:P...XD
@Purpledialga10 Be glad England hates France with every fibre of his being, otherwise Prussia would be fighting all by himself.... (England always jumps at the chance to fight against France C:)
@CelticxPanda As I said in the note, it's an excerpt from ANNcast (Anime News Network podcast): specifically the episode "Shermanator Salvation" from May 7, 2010.
@PolandOwnsMLPs1 Yeah i had a hunch after reading Wikipedia too and some history about it..but i was confused on why dosent Germany remember anything >.<
@Kaneuchiha666 Historically...after the Holy Roman Empire was disolved by Napoleon, the 360 Germanic states that made up the Holy Roman Empire became a smaller group of Germanic states (38, I think) that the Prussian leader Otto von Bismarck attempted to unite economically with Prussia. The Germanic states were unified on January 18th, 1871. It became the 2nd German Reich, or...well, Germany. Prussia became a very important state within the Reich.
considering I get straight As in every subject, obviously anime isn't in any way going to "melt your brain". In fact, I have a wide variety of people all over the world that I've had small conversations with online, and was able to speak a littl of their native language, which is something I'd have never been able to do without Hetalia. Also, I am now proud of my heritage, while before Hetalia I just wanted to be Japanese. And I'm able to make friends easier now too:)
this makes me actually pay attention in class!!!!!! and i learned alot from hetalia!! i didnt know there was an austrian war!! none the less Belarus, prussia, lativia, estonia, and lituania were even countries!!!!!!!!
I started watching hetalia a week before I got into my history class. I never studied. I made OVER 100 on most of the tests because I got his random useless trivia questions about the countries =D
Yeh know, I was always a bit of a fan of history. I always thought it was interesting. However, Hetalia took what I already loved, and made it hilarious.
Hetalia itself doesn't always teach history. But it does make it come alive more than any textbook ever did for me. I learn better when I can imagine people with hilarious quirks. It's kind of like how you make little songs and such about things you learn in school to remember them. At least...that's how it works for me.
YOu know, its because of this show that I am extreemely interested in History and world affairs. With American elections coming up there is a lot of talk about America so I pay attention to it. Now I'll be going to college to get started on a career in teaching, guess who will LOVE her history class and now knows how to make it fun? And who is to blame? Hetalia.
It isn't the show really that teaches you.... It's more of if you actually like the characters and want to learn more about them you look them up and find the most interesting things about the character/country I never new ANYTHING about germany prussia or austria but thanks to actually being interested with the characters, I've learned so much about Austria and Prussia that I would never learn in an american school and I am glad I looked it up <3 thank you Roderich and Gilbert for being cool

I actually just found hetalia to be amusing, i had always been interested in history, this just makes it more fun for me now.. It also inspired me to learn new languages or at least bits and pieces..
in my opinion hetalia is something great and not just the manga/web-comic/anime but the whole fandom with all its fanfictions and stories and stuff. - When I read a fanfiction I have to look up the facts, in my history class I always ask myself "how can I put this in a hetalia story" and then I think "is that even possible? What does my history book say?" and I look it up to write my story properly. - The pop-ups in the anime serve as a model and encourage you to look things up by yourself.
Any public school in America will only teach you from Columbus to (if you have a very good teacher) MAYBE the start of the american civil war. EVERY DAMN YEAR the same lesson over the same thing, ingnoring anything else that ever happened elsewhere, as if every other country popped into existance for the sole purpose to interact with America, then dropped off the face of the earth afterward. It actually makes me sick how ethnocentric the history they attempt to force-feed us is.
@GlorifiedMonster@GlorifiedMonster I'm in the highest history class I can take, but I've learned more about European history from 5 minute episodes of Hetalia than I have from a half-year of AP World. It's not the teachers fault though, they can only gloss over the barest facts if they intend to give us 4000 years of history before the exam. It should be split up better; maybe by time periods (A year on ancient history, a year on the middle ages, etc.) What do you think?
@rihannomusume I have to agree completely.. itd be easier as well for students! I mean most already know about the civil war and they're STILL teaching it to us over and over.. you cant expect students to pay attention in class if its the same thing over and over
@GlorifiedMonster Really? I only got the civil war once, it's been the revolution time after time. The only breaks in the pattern were 4th grade, when we learned about being a spanish colony... then the revolution; and in 8th grade when we started the causes of the civil war. Are teachers in my state mad that the south (us) lost, or do they just prefer teaching about the 13 colonies because we weren't a part of them? By either logic teaching about other countrie's history makes even more sense.
@GlorifiedMonster I guess my teachers are trying not to offend the rednecks who are still rooting for the Confederacy by cutting it out of history classes... on the other hand english classes go over civil rights; although, again, the exact same thing every year -___-' While I understand we need to learn this stuff, changing up the lessons once in a while might motivate more kids to pay attention.
I've actually learnt most of the history I now know through fanfiction and role-playing. I didn't know half the things I know about Italy now before I started role-playing Hetalia. From the anime I mostly learned about different cultures and it did reawake my interest in history which had been subverted after an entire semester of Australian history (we don't really have a lot of it so I felt that one term of Australian history would have been sufficient).
***WARNING!! RANDOMNESS!***Second part of that: "Austria took France, Russia, and Sweden against Prussia, which had already signed a treaty of alliance with Britain."
@DarknessOverAll13 - that's what intrigues me about the show. It's just like with "My Little Pony"; I am not a big fan of the show itself, but I'm much more interested in the effect the show is having on people. Specifically, getting AMERICAN TEENS interested in reading about Frederick the Great, etc.!
@Rheinhard If only... the only thing that teenage kids care about these days are either My Little Pony (like you said) and Justin Bieber and Twilight =_=
@WolfieTheAssassin - I disagree. Admittedly a lot of teens care about those, but the reason I'm interested in this show is the number of teens who attend my panels and who seem to care about things like the details of the Prussian social welfare system under Bismarck. Maybe a minority overall, but not zero...
@Rheinhard I understand; it's just my opinion because where I live specifically, that's all that the kids care about. I've seen every single episode of Hetalia and I've never been attached to an anime for this long. It made me become a history nerd (I was even interested in history before I ever heard about Hetalia). Sad thing is when I try to get my other friends interested in Hetalia they say it's boring and would rather read Twilight :/
@Rheinhard For sure :) though, all of my friends are still slackers in History class :( I really want a Hetalian friend that would be more interested in the logical side of Hetalia (Like WolfieTheAssassin down there >u< She's my BFF and she actually cares about that :))
I never saw the similarities between Germany and Holy Rome until I saw fanfics. Then I rewatched it and saw that they did look similar. Then someone on dA gave a link to prove that Holy Rome and Germany are the same person and I read it... even if it was from Wiki. I wonder now when Italy will notice or when the fact will actually pop up.
@Snowball502 Well I think it's clearly implied in the show that that is the case, and a lot of the land area which comprised the HRE is now what we think of as Germany, but I think a very good case can be made that the inheritor of the mantle of the HRE should be Austria. The majority of the Holy Roman Emperors were Hapsburgs, the ruling family of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
@Rheinhard So you're saying that technically HRE is Austria? How is that possible? In the show HRE and Austria are seen living together, so how would that work? Also, if HRE was located where Germany is now, then it'd be more logical that Germany was HRE instead of Austria.
@Snowball502 - no no, in the SHOW, it's pretty clear Hidekaz is saying that HRE grows up to be Germany. But from a POLITICAL standpoint, focusing on the chain of power (from the ruling house of the Holy Roman Emperors, which for centuries have been of the house of Hapsburg), and not on land boundaries (though what's now Austria was in the HRE too, as was most of Western Europe from France to Poland) it would make more sense to say that Austria is the logical inheritor of the title of HRE.
@Snowball502 - As my Hetalia History co-author RF reminded me, when Napoleon Bonaparte declared the HRE was dead in 1806 after defeating them, the the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II became Emperor Francis I of Austria. Also most of Prussia (East Prussia, now mostly Poland) was never part of the HRE, except for the Margraviate of Brandenburg. But the king of Prussia became Emperor of Germany after 1871. So, to sum up... it's complicated!
@Rheinhard Poor HRE... He's been tossed around everywhere, not really sure of who he is, or who he belongs to, or who his real boss is. All he really wanted (In the show)was to become one with Italy, but then he had to leave. Then he died.
But, yes it is complicated. I know what I'm asking my History teacher on Tuesday! (Even though we aren't learning about HRE yet. Or I doubt we ever will...)
@Snowball502 - well perhaps not died so much as transformed... Interesting to learn what your teacher thinks about this... I am not sure how much of these details of European history American primary school history teachers are familiar with, in the main... My former history teacher friend said that the main thing they're interested in for history teacher certification is that you can teach U.S. 101...
WHAT?! Really?! He is?!?! *Runs to double check facts, reads a bunch, triangulates sources, checks AGAIN, runs back* Huhuhuh *Out of breath* Yep. He is :) Also, I learned! YIPPY
Today we were talking about Italy in my world history class, and all I could picture was Italy from Hetalia, same goes for all the other countries. It makes it easier to keep up with what is happening if I'm picturing people instead of random shapped blobs/land masses :) it also makes me want to want to go to history class so who ever's saying it can make you want to go, your right:D
It's not a substitute for real studying, but Hetalia does introduce us to new events and alliances that we've probably never heard of. Also, it sparks interest in history, so you'll actually want to learn more. I can name almost every European capital and describe a LOT of flags.
Hetalia is maybe about 0.4% educational, and the rest is crack, but I watched season one when I was 12 and suddenly became a history addict... In my mind the Hetalia characters were all telling me what had happened in their countries at a certain time and why... I guess it just helped me see my textbook as a set of actual events and people rather than just words on paper.
Hetalia isn't a SUBSTITUE for your history class, no. But it's a good compliment. And also, I too started paying more attention and actually looking FORWARD to history because of Hetalia (not that I'm constantly reminded of hetalia in World History. :P)
I find it funny that people don't think that Hetalia teaches history, because it really does. And sometimes, you learn things from other sources, yes, but it's because of Hetalia that you find yourself actually paying attention :'D
@Comptech224 it's from an episode of the Anime News Network podcast, ANNcast, May 6th 2010, named "Shermanator Salvation". They have a brief debate about the nascent Hetalia fan phenomenon near the start of the episode, which contained this dialog (which I've edited down).
I was actually able to relate Hetalia to a lot of what we were doing in class, and it made it that much more interesting. Hetalia is made for the sake of entertainment, but part of the reason it's so entertaining is that it's true, even if only a bit.
I love how most people say Hetalia doesn't teach history, even though you have explanations, that pop up in the corner of your screen, and between scenes. It's just that most people don't pause the video to read them. Which is sad, because if they did, then theyreally would learn history, at least some of it. I learned a lot more about the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth thanks to World Series, (the 3rd and 4th season of Hetalia).
The thing for me is, I ALWAYS pause, just because I can't help but be interested. It also helps that when I was little, my bedtime stories and the books I would read at home were mostly about the Tudors (thanks to my overly obsessive mom)
@hinatagirl282008 dude my mom is freakishly obsessed with the tudors too. it kinda rubbed off on me cause i was in my history class and my teacher didnt know much about them and i was just in the corner shooting off facts about Henry and all them. it was kinda funny
when i started watching hetalia, in my history class we started learnig ww2... hetalia helpd me...so i have to say if you actually pay atention to some parts you learn some history...thumbs up if you agree!!
@emonote123 In my reading class last year whenever we were on the Holocaust section, I had watched the first few episodes of Hetalia [I wasn't a big fan then, so I didn't watch it much] prior to it. Hetalia helped me remember which countries were the Allies, and which countries were the Axis. :DD We had a test on it, too
hetalia makes learning enjoyable and i can remember stuff. but when my world geography teacher says something it's like blah blah place you need to remember on test blah blah. seriously the class would remember hetalia. and then maybe that other 50% of the class wouldn't have Fs. i'm serious about that F thing. then again i'm in the class with the most idiots.

@GlorifiedMonster @GlorifiedMonster I'm in the highest history class I can take, but I've learned more about European history from 5 minute episodes of Hetalia than I have from a half-year of AP World. It's not the teachers fault though, they can only gloss over the barest facts if they intend to give us 4000 years of history before the exam. It should be split up better; maybe by time periods (A year on ancient history, a year on the middle ages, etc.) What do you think?
rihannomusume 1 month ago
@rihannomusume I have to agree completely.. itd be easier as well for students! I mean most already know about the civil war and they're STILL teaching it to us over and over.. you cant expect students to pay attention in class if its the same thing over and over
GlorifiedMonster 1 month ago
@GlorifiedMonster Really? I only got the civil war once, it's been the revolution time after time. The only breaks in the pattern were 4th grade, when we learned about being a spanish colony... then the revolution; and in 8th grade when we started the causes of the civil war. Are teachers in my state mad that the south (us) lost, or do they just prefer teaching about the 13 colonies because we weren't a part of them? By either logic teaching about other countrie's history makes even more sense.
rihannomusume 1 month ago
@rihannomusume Ah, see? I'm from the north.. They teach us about the mill girls and the civil war more than they do the revolution..
GlorifiedMonster 1 month ago
@GlorifiedMonster I guess my teachers are trying not to offend the rednecks who are still rooting for the Confederacy by cutting it out of history classes... on the other hand english classes go over civil rights; although, again, the exact same thing every year -___-' While I understand we need to learn this stuff, changing up the lessons once in a while might motivate more kids to pay attention.
rihannomusume 1 month ago
I've actually learnt most of the history I now know through fanfiction and role-playing. I didn't know half the things I know about Italy now before I started role-playing Hetalia. From the anime I mostly learned about different cultures and it did reawake my interest in history which had been subverted after an entire semester of Australian history (we don't really have a lot of it so I felt that one term of Australian history would have been sufficient).

***WARNING!! RANDOMNESS!***Second part of that: "Austria took France, Russia, and Sweden against Prussia, which had already signed a treaty of alliance with Britain."
Kinda made me giggle...just a little.

Rheinhard 1 month ago 22
@Rheinhard If only... the only thing that teenage kids care about these days are either My Little Pony (like you said) and Justin Bieber and Twilight =_=
WolfieTheAssassin 1 month ago
@WolfieTheAssassin - I disagree. Admittedly a lot of teens care about those, but the reason I'm interested in this show is the number of teens who attend my panels and who seem to care about things like the details of the Prussian social welfare system under Bismarck. Maybe a minority overall, but not zero...
Rheinhard 1 month ago 5
@Rheinhard I understand; it's just my opinion because where I live specifically, that's all that the kids care about. I've seen every single episode of Hetalia and I've never been attached to an anime for this long. It made me become a history nerd (I was even interested in history before I ever heard about Hetalia). Sad thing is when I try to get my other friends interested in Hetalia they say it's boring and would rather read Twilight :/
WolfieTheAssassin 1 month ago
@Rheinhard For sure :) though, all of my friends are still slackers in History class :( I really want a Hetalian friend that would be more interested in the logical side of Hetalia (Like WolfieTheAssassin down there >u< She's my BFF and she actually cares about that :))

@Rheinhard i love healia(fave anime BTW) and me, my two bigger brothers and two friends are all fans of MLP XD

I KNEW IT!!! HRE IS GERMANY!! NOW I HAVE TO GO RUB THIS INTO MY NEIGHBOR'S FACE!!! :DD
Snowball502 1 month ago
@Snowball502 Well I think it's clearly implied in the show that that is the case, and a lot of the land area which comprised the HRE is now what we think of as Germany, but I think a very good case can be made that the inheritor of the mantle of the HRE should be Austria. The majority of the Holy Roman Emperors were Hapsburgs, the ruling family of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Rheinhard 1 month ago
@Rheinhard So you're saying that technically HRE is Austria? How is that possible? In the show HRE and Austria are seen living together, so how would that work? Also, if HRE was located where Germany is now, then it'd be more logical that Germany was HRE instead of Austria.
Correct me if I'm wrong please.
Snowball502 1 month ago
@Snowball502 - no no, in the SHOW, it's pretty clear Hidekaz is saying that HRE grows up to be Germany. But from a POLITICAL standpoint, focusing on the chain of power (from the ruling house of the Holy Roman Emperors, which for centuries have been of the house of Hapsburg), and not on land boundaries (though what's now Austria was in the HRE too, as was most of Western Europe from France to Poland) it would make more sense to say that Austria is the logical inheritor of the title of HRE.
Rheinhard 1 month ago
@Rheinhard I see.. So HRE was raised by Austria but is Germany Geographicly? That would make sense.
Snowball502 1 month ago
@Snowball502 - As my Hetalia History co-author RF reminded me, when Napoleon Bonaparte declared the HRE was dead in 1806 after defeating them, the the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II became Emperor Francis I of Austria. Also most of Prussia (East Prussia, now mostly Poland) was never part of the HRE, except for the Margraviate of Brandenburg. But the king of Prussia became Emperor of Germany after 1871. So, to sum up... it's complicated!
Rheinhard 1 month ago
@Rheinhard Poor HRE... He's been tossed around everywhere, not really sure of who he is, or who he belongs to, or who his real boss is. All he really wanted (In the show)was to become one with Italy, but then he had to leave. Then he died.
But, yes it is complicated. I know what I'm asking my History teacher on Tuesday! (Even though we aren't learning about HRE yet. Or I doubt we ever will...)
Snowball502 1 month ago
@Snowball502 - well perhaps not died so much as transformed... Interesting to learn what your teacher thinks about this... I am not sure how much of these details of European history American primary school history teachers are familiar with, in the main... My former history teacher friend said that the main thing they're interested in for history teacher certification is that you can teach U.S. 101...

Kitkat5230 4 months ago
Hetalia is maybe about 0.4% educational, and the rest is crack, but I watched season one when I was 12 and suddenly became a history addict... In my mind the Hetalia characters were all telling me what had happened in their countries at a certain time and why... I guess it just helped me see my textbook as a set of actual events and people rather than just words on paper.
trappedontheinternet 4 months ago
Hetalia isn't a SUBSTITUE for your history class, no. But it's a good compliment. And also, I too started paying more attention and actually looking FORWARD to history because of Hetalia (not that I'm constantly reminded of hetalia in World History. :P)

I find it funny that people don't think that Hetalia teaches history, because it really does. And sometimes, you learn things from other sources, yes, but it's because of Hetalia that you find yourself actually paying attention :'D

Comptech224 5 months ago in playlist More videos from Rheinhard
@Comptech224 it's from an episode of the Anime News Network podcast, ANNcast, May 6th 2010, named "Shermanator Salvation". They have a brief debate about the nascent Hetalia fan phenomenon near the start of the episode, which contained this dialog (which I've edited down).
Rheinhard 5 months ago

@DisneyFangirl09
The thing for me is, I ALWAYS pause, just because I can't help but be interested. It also helps that when I was little, my bedtime stories and the books I would read at home were mostly about the Tudors (thanks to my overly obsessive mom)
hinatagirl282008 1 month ago
@hinatagirl282008 dude my mom is freakishly obsessed with the tudors too. it kinda rubbed off on me cause i was in my history class and my teacher didnt know much about them and i was just in the corner shooting off facts about Henry and all them. it was kinda funny

@DisneyFangirl09 I think it's because the characters talk really fast with accents most of the time I can't even understand them...
