  • I remember cruising the streets of Detroit headin' to the store or some other cool place w/pops in his w/green '54 Merc Monterey! I can still hear dad singing along w/that mono speaker to the sound of the 4 Lads or some "Big Band" music of his and mom's era! Dad had just been lured to Ford's design from GM and the Merc was his first of many! Amazing how a song can spark such long ago memories! I was 5, Capt. Kangaroo was just starting, I was starting school, we will have these moments 2 remember

  • @Mr57Henry Me too - except we were cruisin Omaha, my dad drove a 54 ford customline and I was 6. We grew up at the right time, didn't we?

  • @John1948Five We sure did! Back when there was little in the way of safty for kids! My little sister nearly flew out of that Merc going around the corner but as luck would have it she was wearing suspenders! Helmets on a bike ride? Heaven forbid! Unless....you were going to play Football somewhere! Funny how many fond memories thump your mellon when listening to these great songs. Hudda ever thunk the day would come yud pop up youtube and hear whatever you want? Cruz'd thru Neb! Go 75MPH Yah!

  • Have always loved this song since I was a teen in the '50's - thanks for sharing it here so we can continue to enjoy it.

  • Excellent summary of background; I LOVE learning material such as this about much-loved groups from my youth.

  • Great harmonies of years gone past. This music would get a woman in the mood faster than lightning. I have the vinyl issue of Breezin' Along on Columbia. Thanks for the post John.

  • Franklin Field, Boat house Row

  • The songs don't even compare to the music of yesteryear.

  • great post, so so nostalgic, thanks

  • I remember The Four Lads from the early fiftys.

  • awesome!!! one of the all time great songs. those school days were fun, we all go our seperate ways but have some great memories. as we are in the winter of our lives we look back at those great times and are so greatful. thanks

Personally, I thank him for these great songs/videos.

  • @alternatehistories: His prerogative for his postings...

  • Thankyou for sharing this wonderful "memories" video . This is my 1961 class song :) The 50's and very early 60's were the best !

  • Great song; not maudlin, in any way!

    Vocals are outstanding!

    Production is excellent!

    Story and music are timeless!

  • @Esconsia What a lovely thing to write about your husband. He has chosen well. This song brings to mind the New Year's Eve I got pretty far gone, got into a taxi with my girl, and gave my address backwards!_ instead of 2132 ---- Street, i said 3122! My girl didn't live in my town, so she had no idea what my address was. Eventually I sobered up enough to tell my address properly, so we could get home and crack the bottle of champagne I had waiting. that wasn't the girl I married.

  • This song by The Four Lads hit #3 on the Top 40 charts. And it finished at #17 overall for the year 1955. On July 9, 1955, Bill Haley and His Comets hit #1 with Rock Around the Clock, signifying the start of the Rock Era. This song charted afterwards, and became the first big hit for a Canadian act as this new era in music began.

  • Brings back memories to me from a long time ago, my husband used to dance with me to this, he still does..it takes us back to when we first met, he in his suit, me in my jeans...we were looked upon as an odd couple, but we didnt care, we were like the modern day Lucy and Ricky...got compared alot to them, sometimes it was anything but love and other times it was anything but not...hes not as young as he used to be, but it doesnt matter, i still luv him anyways...wouldnt trade him 4 the world <3

  • I feel very sorry for those that indicated thumbs down and hope that the rest of your lives will be made of moments to remember.

  • This song defined my HS and college (Notre Dame) days in the wonderful 50's. Be nice if we could turn back the clock.

  • Does anyone ever have that feeling where you miss the past? Even if it was a few years ago? I love this type of music. Good uploader.

  • Great song by four guys from St. Mike's Collage in Toronto Canada.

I was very young then and how was I to know what kind of future was

    being fore told by them!

  • Great song by four guys from St. Mike's Collage in Toronto Canada.

  • @John1948Five i just love that song The Four Lads - Moments To Remember

  • This great song spent 6 weeks at #2 in 1955.

  • Thanks to my wounderful friend ebfan41 for sendin and sharin this wounderful song with me. I don't recall the group or this song, but it is terrific,.Thank you so much for sharin and I wish you a beautiful Easter weekend my friend. God Bless, Hugs & Smiles, Love, Jan

  • Thank you for this post, and thank you to my friend ebfan41 for sharing. AAhhh...I remember this well! Beautiful harmony...

  • This song brings back such happy school days memories!! Thank you John for posting. Love the pictures!!! The Four Lads singing this song is a favorite. 5*****

  • I go back to the 50s and 60s and wish I could see it all.

  • Great Canadian group the four ladds

  • love it..

  • Beautiful voices ... blend well. Great song... good memories!

  • This is REAL music , Not computer generated trash.

  • since michael buble has surfaced and sings so many classics, why don't we see a new "group" get together to sing the standards too ??? strike while the iron may be hot.....whatdyya think ? I'm in......never grow tired of hearing good music..call me old but I don't really care.......I can still hear...this generation may not be able to say the same when they reach my age..........?????

  • I graduated in 2008, and wholly wish that this was the song our choir sang at Graduation!

  • I Love this stuff!

  • great!

  • We also have a gen coming into adulthood after 9/11; and they DON'T remember a more optimistic, happier America or world. Today, how does one learn when schools are racked with violence, not to mention college being too exorbitant which has created more stress in being able "to make it" They see no hope. They don't realize they're not going to be young and pretty forever, so I wish them long life! They don't have the timeline to see how quickly decades fly by.

  • Reading these posts, my take is the women's movement largely added to today's problems. I remember moms were home as were all my friends growing up. Children today don't have this anchor, or discipline, respect or social "ppl" skills. We played in our hoods, unlike driving through suburbs where no kids play due to abduction.(understandable); but we live in fear. Many 20 ish have no work ethic because companies don't value them, and the wages aren't livable.

  • We will have the FIFties to reMEMber. :(

  • This came out in about 1955. i even remember it. I still remember my name too

  • Sweet!

I found this song in the 1955 chart @ billboardvideos.(net)

  • Brings back great memories of years and friends gone.

  • When it comes to nostagic songs they do not get any better than this. No how many times I hear it ..I get very sentimental. Wish i could go back and relive that time. When I was in High School in Norway, Michigan we drove all the way down to Green Bay because we heard about a place called McDonalds. Around 1958

  • I have always loved this song. It reminds of me of and makes me yearn for my youth and days of long , long ago.

  • @colreb1937 I know what youmean, I was born in 32 and the music through the 70's were magnificant..............

  • @colreb1937 I sure wish my youth could have been in those innocent days. I'm 25 today, and my youth years (not that long ago) were certainly not as innocent as this music proves yours were! No wonder those were happier times, I'm quite envious.

  • @meloyellowduck They were indeed happy and innocent days. No worries about gangs, drugs, etc. If you had a disagreement with someone you didn't have to worry about get killed. Also, the music from that era is unequaled.

  • 'Talking about discipline, I knew what was acceptable and what was outside the red lined limits. No one told me; I just knew. Having said that, I'm truly glad the worse thing I could do was drink beer: there were no meth, in the early 60s smoking pot was unheard of, at least at my high school.

  • @frontspar Hey, same here. In 62-63 - no dope in my high school. NONE. Then this wierd band called the Beatles came on the scene with this weird music. 3-4 years later, a third of the kids are doing dope. I hate their music. It sold us drugs and immorality. When a nation crumbles, moral rot happens first. We are there

  • @sparwood8 Wow, I couldn't agree more - I thought I was the only one who regarded the Beatles as one of the most destructive forces of the 20th century. They and their music popularized the counter-culture to the point where countless middle-class kids were convinced that if they didn't buy into the "sex, drugs and rock-and-roll" lifestyle, they would be hopelessly "un-cool". Hitler killed 11 million in WW2 - how many millions of kids had their lives ruined by drug use, teen pregnancy, etc.?

  • Young minded man, and to everyone else, all I can say is let's embrace it and treasure it just as long as we possibly can. The title is so apropo because these truly are " Moments to Remember."

  • very nice, love it,,, thanks

  • This was the theme for our high school prom back in 1957. So, yes, it brings back a lot of wonderful memories.

  • Does anyone have The Four Lads singing "When You and I Were Young Maggie Blues"? I had it on a 45rpm EP back in 1959 but have not heard it for years.

  • Makes me cry thinking of good times and good old days and good people gone

  • the "fabulous fifties"..wonderful time !! music was great !

  • 4 lads could sing at outlandish notes and still sound good. Praise!

  • I'd like to add that when I was working as a bank teller back in 1973, I had the honor of meeting one of the co-writers of this song, Robert Allen, great guy! I used to cash his checks for him. I hope he's still with us!

  • Great video, great song, great You ♥Ine*****

  • I totally agree with you RayBushFox, the '50s was it as far as music goes. I remember playing this record on my RCA Victor 45 rpm record player. I'm sure a lot of you remember those. And John1948Five, you're right, I think we lost it for our kids. The music that's out there now along with the Internet and the movies have just destroyed todays youth. This was truly real music, I wish it would all come back but I'm 61 and I don't think I'll live to see it if it ever does.

  • @JbrickM100A , I don't think I will be here either; I'm 72, but still listen to the oldies as often as I can. I love it too!!!

  • Truly..."moments to remember" make our lives worth living...from childhood to our present lives.

  • "We do not remember days.........we remember moments...the richness of life lies in the memories we have forgotten.....".-Cesare Pavese-. Thanks for this wonderful music. Makes me loveand value life more.

  • I love the lyrics of this song........

  • Aaaaahhhhh.....I'm transported back to a time when music WAS music! Thank YOU!

  • Boy this song and the pictures, especially the one showing snow covered small town Main street sure bring back memories of days gone by. Great days great times.

  • I know what you mean. I can hardly watch this video without slipping back to 1966. Most of the photos came from my high school yearbook.

  • @John1948Five I don't know about 1966 because I remember the Four Lads singing this song when I returned to college after the summer off. This was at very latest, the Fall of 1956, maybe even 1955.

  • @mpeindms I know the recording is from the 50s but the photos in the video are all from my 1966 yearbook.

  • @mpeindms Song was released in early fall of 1955.

  • WONDERFUL,THANKS FOR ADD

  • Within 20 minutes, the Lads, their drummer, and several of the teenage fans were having a hilarious water pistol fight in the huge alley behind the Chicago Theater

Everybody was totally drenched, and laughing like little kids.

The water pistol fight lasted almost an hour, until the Lads had to go inside, put on their tux's and look dignified for the next show.

Talk about a glorious moment to remember!

  • @uncleoscar7 This drummer you speak of is my father . His name is Eddie Nicholas and signed with the four lads in July of 1954.and played with them until around 1959 . He went into the studio with them and played on all the records within this time period . In 1961 went on to play with Paul Anka for a few years. This cracks me up because as a child we had many many water gun fights. Always a fun guy.

  • @uncleoscar7 - oh for simpler times when one could kill an hour with a simple water pistol & an imagination! Thanks for the great story, it was worth scolling down for! This song peaked in Sept, 1955. My channel has 111 playlists for every year since 1900 & features 300 artists playlisted as well. It's a time capsule of a century of music waiting to take you back........

  • so we met them at Tribune Tower, and on their way out of the building, we each gave each one of them a water pistol

They filled them at the drinking fountain in the lobby, and with a few war hoops, started a joyfilled duel all the way back to the Chicago Theater.

Their drummer went over to Walgreens'

and got a water pistol, to join the fun

A few of the other autograph hounds at the stage door quickly lined up in Walgreen's and bought out their water pistols. (Continued)

  • In the 50's I had a Four Lads Fan Club

Every time they would come to perform at the Chicago Theater my friends and I would be there chasing them around the stage door between shows.

The fan club "grapevine" brought us news that when the Lads were in school together in Toronto, one of the things they loved to do was play with water pistols.

So four of us went to Walgreens and each bought a water pistol.

They were doing a publicity appearance at WGN, (continued next box)

  • Was this song in the movie Grease?

  • I don't believe so.

  • @generationll If it was, I don't remember it, as I have seen this movie many times.

  • whenever i hear this song over the radio, i can't help but reminisce the old days.

used to be an opening theme song in an am radio station every 1:00 p.m.

  • Nice blending..How I wish our group then could perform this way..Hehe!!

  • Golden Oldie

    Thank You

  • Have always loved this song.........this is the best version of the song......Thanks for sharing ( :

  • very nice song...

  • What a great, wonderful song! with so much background information. Thanks a lot, John!

  • The 4 guys at 1:45 looks like The Ames Brothers

  • the intro is sad

  • Great!!

I grew up with this music, to me the 1950's was the best decade for music, the Top 40 had Rock'n'Roll, Crooners, Orchestras, Doo Wop and just about any other type of music represented.

Needless to say, I wouldn't give 2 cents for the tripe that they call music today.

    Thanks for the memories.

  • The generation after WWII wasn't spoiled rotten so much as being truly blessed to live in America during its greatest expansion of the middle class.

That dates from about 1947 to 1975. No country in the world matched America for sheer economic output and distribution. Kids growing up then had a lot because there was a lot to have. But that was before the Japanese took over manufacturing and we started exporting our economy to the Chinese. We will never see another time like that. .

  • This is a great song, but it makes me melancholy.

  • I really feel sorry for these kids today. They're young but they have no youth. The internet, movies and crappy music they make today have wiped away their innocence and destroyed any chance at a real childhood.

  • That's an interesting description of what I have see and worried about. We were so blessed but our generation is the one that let it all be lost. I guess we were better kids than parents.

  • Hello John, there's an interesting theory about this very thing. "The Greatest Generation" grew up during the great depression and then fought in WWII. After suffering all of that they were determined their children would have a much better life. The next generation was raised spoiled rotten with everything handed to them and an unhealthy sense of entitlement and instant gratification. Work ethics and honor became things of the past.

  • I'm only 25, and I agree. I find it sad that my generation has had too many things handed to them, and have already started foolishly having kids of their own who are turning out even worse.

  • It's okay son. With youngsters like you around there may still be hope for this wonderful country of ours.

  • Nope I think your theory applies to the present generation. I worked hard all thought out High School. Both my parents worked and we were what you would call middle class. I had a job right out of high school. They were good times because we made them that way and our parents were much stricter than those of today. When we did something wrong you got hit where ever your parents could get you, today they are sent to their rooms to play with their computers! Sorry we were not spoiled rotten!

  • Yes, but we are the ones who failed to provide discipline. If anyone ruined America we have to look at ourselves.

  • Have to remember, the Four Lads are Canadian!!! They were one of the better groups

  • @John1948Five Good comment. We let the ACLU take our freedoms away, and the US Supreme court turn itself into a judicial dictatorship. We also worshipped Elvis instead of God. HUGE mistake. I have no quarrel with Elvis though

  • @686204 It's not that we tried as much as that our liberal society has made discipline a crime and we were not allowed to raise our kids as our parents raised us. We let these liberal teachers and others infest our society with their righteous views and that's when these kids turned rotten.

  • @686204 I agree with You.

  • @logancody07 I am from that 'next' generation, and at age 20 was working on a huge construction project (The Bennet Dam in Norhtern B.C.). NOTHING was ever handed to me, neither was I spoiled. I DID work my arse off, though

  • @sparwood8 There are exceptions to every rule my friend. You obviously have a very admirable work ethic of which you can be proud. In a world of lazy losers you'll be very successful.

  • @logancody07 Thanks. I lost a bundle in the Meltdown of '08 though. I have been retired for over 10 years. Run my own business for spending cash, and something worthwhile to do 20-25 hours a week. and at 65 I still workout with the weights and the punching bag. Time goes SO fast. We are here, and then gone; like a vapour

  • @logancody07 Hey I know lots of guys in their 20's who love to do a day's work. We only notice the fat ones who are forever texting or playing silly vid games

  • @sparwood8 That's good to hear. Perhaps there's hope after all.

  • @logancody07 I couldn't have said it any better. Amen.

  • @logancody07 I was born in 1934 and we were very poor, but my wife and I didn't spoil our 2 boys. They, and most of their friends, had good work ethics.

  • @logancody07 Sad but very very true.

  • @logancody07 I disagree! I was born in 1934, and too young for World War 11, was not spoiled The people I knew in the 50's were not spoiled. My two sons were not spoiled and neither were thetr friends. That's a ridiculous theory!

  • @logancody07 I am also sorry for the young generation crazy movies and music they grow up to fast ,no real memories will be theirs, they want it all and want it now no common sense .every thing comes to easy and the world will not get any better cheers

  • Lordy, every time I hear this song it takes me back to 1955, U.S.Navy boot camp at Bainbridge, Md and the day we had this marathon physical, everyone naked as a jaybird and this song being played over and over thru the speakers.

  • Good Lord, fitzpjo, I guess the Navy had a twisted sense of humor, eh?

  • Oh yeah! Well I certainly haven't forgotten and of course the military have ways to make a lasting impression.

  • "...we will have these moments to remember......"

  • The movie Grease is from 1977-78.Not the type of movie I would associate with this song.

  • Grease was released in 1978 but it the story was set in 1959. It is the exactly the kind of movie I associate with this song. So I did. LOL

  • god, the harmony and strength of their voices. it sure does bring back memories as i graduated in 1958. what fabulous music we had in t hose days. thans for sharing.

  • what a memory song

  • very well done, great clips with the song

  • I love this song! (I wasn't alive to have awesome memories like you guys, though) I Wish!!!! :)

  • I remember so clearly waking up in the morning and hearing my dad playing this song on the radio! WOW what great days they were. Thanks, John...

  • Ah..Dad....this is for you.

  • At 1:22 are a bunch of seniors leaving the high school. At 1:54 is my senior prom. The guy in the middle was my backyard neighbor. We hung out together a lot. Those were the glory days!

  • This brings back a lot of memories for me too. A lot of the photos are from my yearbook. At :23 is our spring dance. At :29 we didn't tear the goal post down but we got the net after winning the Nebraska Class B Basketball Championship. At :46 are my friends Steve and Barb. They got married later. At :52 Al and Dan are smashing bumper cars at Arnolds Park on our sneak trip. Continued...

  • This brought back memories! Who would have guessed?
