  • the post-flashdance outfits, joe pizullo's voice and persona, the synthlines, the way the set looked incredibly dated even for 1984, sergio mendes' smile and how he scored big even after 20 years in the biz

everything about this is pure win. the only way they could have improved this is by adding paul engemann and joe esposito to the backing vocals

  • What a great groove. Michael McDonald would be proud of the hard hitting harmonies "AND YOU'RE WHERE you have to be tonight" ... Doobies were a huge influence in the hooks of this song. Go Sergio !!

  • The bassist almost looks like David Paich.

  • @lurch321--..yeah! That woman on the right is Siedah Garrett-before she hooked up with Micheal Jackson on that 'BAD' album. Man in the Mirror, I Just Can't Stop Loving You....I'm just sayin'. : )

  • I used to have this cassette when I was stationed in Charleston , SC. this was a nice album, brings back a lot of memories.

  • Sergio and Joe hit #29 in Billboard, 8-4-84. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • awesome years the 80's..yeahhhhhhhh

  • The only downfall to this song is that it ends

  • @goldendavis25hotmail Thank you! Great voice :-)

  • Was it not Mike Sambello who sang lead vocal on this number???? I love this song.

  • @AceBoneOne This singer, Joe Pizzulo, is the original lead.

  • The clapping sax player really makes this song that much better. Without that, this song would be mediocre at best.

  • @stooge35 - That clapping sax player is Ernie Watts, at the time he was the first call sax man. His he's worked with everyone from Quincy to Lee Ritenour. My fave solo was on the Rolling Stones "waiting on a friend". I met him on his jazz tour back in '92. He's just cool like that,...groovin' with the music. LOL Personlly, I think they placed him in the wrong spot for the show.

  • 5 people are fooled easily.... #shameonyou!!!!

  • I Love This Song!

  • sergio jamming out in the back ....love this song!!!

  • É fera! édo Brasil.

  • lol 2:09 he knows how to dance :D

  • Wow miss the 80's the clothes and my mustang and driving down the beach in S.D. and sitting at Sunset Cliffs watching the sun going down.

Can we have a time machine to go back and just relive the music and those wonderful songs.

  • @happymike44 so many memories, so many good times. Where did the time go.

  • Why did I just wake up at 5:30am singing this song?!?! This was the JAM! Long live Solid Gold!!

  • i remember hearing this on radio and thinking great song

  • this was a great song

  • I was heading to the restaurant where I worked in Charlotte and heard this on the radio and it lifted me up ( I guess it was 1984)!

  • Ther is nothing to fault wwith this song.Lyrics, singing all absolutely first class.

  • Just don't make 'em like this anymore. This is music, for real. Thanks SO much for posting this.

  • 0:40 - Isn't that black girl Siedah Garrett on background?

  • @solesirching73 Yes that is her! I was just about to comment on that. She is fabulous!

  • Who in the hell would give thing song a thumbs down?? Thats crazy!!!

  • Hi

Thanks for your reply I appreciate the information.

    Regards

    Matt

  • this dude reminds me of Danny McBride(Kenny Powers).

  • nice! never heard this one before :)

  • Sexy lead voice. Joe Pizzulo should have gotten more fore-runner songs! Dang. Great '80s tune!!!

  • @ForeverInLuvRA Agreed, this was a fabulous song; highly underrated.

  • A relatively minor hit (#29 on Billboard, #5 on Adult chart) but one of my favorites from the early 80's. I still have the 45 single of this around somewhere. As another song from the 80's says. They don't write em like that anymore....

  • I absolutely love this song to this day. Joe Pizzulo has such a killer voice, simply gorgeous performance. I remember buying this single the very first time I heard it on the radio and I played it to death.

  • Awesome all around... 80's back.

  • "with his hit song "alibis", Sergio Mendes!"

Good Lord, it's Joe Pizzulo's voice that makes it, pity he hasn't gotten more individual coverage...he's been a prominent background singer for lots of top names for years.

  • @mtwilkins Absolutely agree with you. Sergio isn't singing...at the very least they could have mentioned Joe. And with a voice like his, he sould have been singing lead long before this.Dang, so '80s, but so sexy.

  • Pure 80's...

  • Why isn't this available on iTunes? This is such an amazing song!

  • @JBags03 Also not on Zune either it sucks.

  • Man this song just catches you it takes me back to being a kid back in the 80's. I love this song something good to ride to in the car.

  • I remember watching this Episode of Solid Gold, when it was Aired in 1984. I was 10yrs old, and I loved this Song.

  • like I said, This is Music, it actually has a Melody. I found this on Cassette in my house, cleaning out the closet.

  • DEMASIADO EJEMPLO DE LOS QUE FUERON LOS 80S TENGO 40 Y CRECI CON ESTAS CANCIONES LAS AMO SERGIO MENDES LO MEJOR

    LUIS DE LIMA

  • @tbstef

ROFL! Yeah, it really does look like him!! "You might be a Redneck if you played drums for Sergio Mendes during the 80's!!"

  • Sergio Mendes is somebody who've gone through the ages.

  • one of THE greatest songs ever written and recorded...

  • Hit #5 AC, #29 pop in Billboard. God bless!

  • Comment removed

  • I LOVE this song but now I'm completely confused. Isn't that Sergio playing keyboards? If so, who's the main vocalist?

  • It's Joe Pizzulo on lead vocals.

    ~Mr. Make Believe

  • I have had the melody of the chorus stuck in my head for 26 years, only having heard it when it was released. That has to be one of the sweetest melodies, its sweetness only surpassed by the sight of Sergio grooving behind the keys.

  • brilliant song. great memories..

  • That's my bro-in law on drums!!

  • Love the line " You think you're in the clear but don't forget, that's exactly the way we met."

  • Hit #29 in Billboard.

  • Never heard of this till today on 1FM. I like it.

  • Great song by Sergio! Classic Sergio @ his best. I agree that Joe Pizzulos' voice is very good. He should've got more attention. great crusin song.

  • can someone tell me where i can purchase this mp3 file, so I can put it in my i-tunes acct. , and send it to my i-pod. I can't seem to find it on i-tunes store for some reason !!

this is such an awesome song, I HAVE to find it!!! HELP !!

  • @icemachineman

i can help you.........only contact me...

  • @busson9

    Hi

Could you please tell me how to get this track from itunes I have been trying to get it since my vinyl copy wore out.

    Thanks in advance,

    Regards

    Matt

  • @melyoc itunes doesn't have the single or the album "confetti" (for some reason "Confetti" never was released as a CD. amazon has the single on sergio mendes classics vol 18. good luck.

  • @walterhawkins80 Thanks for helping people find this recording! I love this song and Dad and I both loved Sergio Mendez (and Brazil 66) since that many years ago (I was not even in school yet but loved their album he bought!)

  • @busson9 Can you help me get a download or an actual vinyl record or anything of this song? My husband has been searching for the song for years. Any help would be so appreciated!!!!!!!!!

  • Joe Pizzulo. Such a great voice, yet his name is so unknown. It's not right.

  • wish these songs were 4eva......jus perfect summer grooves....thanks 4 postin it!!!!!

  • Solid gold dancers!

  • Watched em every week for many years. :) hehe

  • Joe Pizzulo, one of a kind voice.;

  • So BOYS, which of these three is THE HOTTEST?

    1, Joe's vocals (damn solid)

    2. Sergio's keyboards (legendary)

    3. Marilyn McCoo (soooo FINE)

A Classic Kick-Ass Song, but .... the clear

    winner is MARILYN !

  • Joe, for sure. Plus he is a looker. :)

  • Respectfully, Mr. Tall ... I STILL gotta go MARILYN -- just saw her on TV last week... so STILL IS SO HOT ... !

  • @raiderdanCA I agree. She's always been a good looking and good-singing woman. lol

  • very nice!!!

    =P

  • simply Awesome - one of the best all over the 80s. Dann Huff plays guitars !!!

  • This is great..............Thanks

  • "You think you're in the clear but don't forget - that's exactly the way we met." Not many couplets that great have been sung over the centuries!

  • dont believe in reincarnation but i would love to go back and start again in the early 80s until 1986, then go back again...and again...and again ;)

  • Boy you ain't kidding!!!!

  • There's not enough talent available today to do lyrics like this. This song brings back memories!

  • @mattdawg83686

    Well said!

  • plenamente concuerdo con Mattdawg83686

  • Sergio is the bomb! Ole'

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • One hell of a great voice!!!!!!!

  • How can you not feel good listening to this?!

  • i remembe this song when it first came out back in the early 80s, i was 24 when i got married to a lady from asia in her late 30s; we lived in the east hollywood area between los feliz and silver lake, a late disco faze was going on at that time, lots of bars and clubs and lots of young latino gay guys flooded the neighborhood, sunset & hyperion sts, and though i wasn't particularly gay at that time, being young and stoned most of the time, well, my marriage was doomed from the start.

  • Who cares about the Sync! Love the 80's, Solid Gold. More pure than the airbrushed crap today. Original. Great song, couldnt find on Itunes, darn.

  • True that about the airbrushed crap today.

  • I remember this song from when I was working as a disc jockey at a radio station in California. I loved playing it because the tune was so upbeat and fun to listen to.

  • Hey prolific, that must have been fun for you working as a d.j. back then. So many fun songs to play. I'm assuming you love music as I do. Are you doing anything in the music biz now or not. Cindy

  • I heard this first by a live cover band at Luke Air Force on July 4, 1984 as we were heading home as a family. Then the next day I finally heard the real version on the radio and loved it ever since. It just has that killer irresistible bassline. I think on most TV shows these performers actually perform it "live". However when it comes time to put the show on the air they lay audio over the "live" sound and then edit it. The lucky ones attend the taping and hear it live.

  • The lip syncing isn't off, it's actually the audio/video sync that is off... you can even tell by the instruments being out of sync.

  • this song is mystifying!! luv it!!

  • I love you Joe pizzulo, I hope this song never dies

  • Sergio's "Alibis" is a great song, much underrated. But, geez, the lip syncing on "Solid Gold" always sucked. (And I grew up watching that program -- loved the dancing.) But, aaaahhh, it's nice to see Joe Pizzulo again! I say bring the mullet back, and bring on a reissued, remastered SERGIO MENDES CD for those of us who don't want to hunt down the 1983's LP's songs on iTunes.

  • are you referring to the orginal album with "never gonna let you go"? this song is on a different album. yeah,it is a great pop song.

  • The video is out of sync with the audio.

  • Lindo espectáculo, música y todooooo. Todo aquí es hermoso.

  • Great song!!!

  • Dear Ohearn22, You're 100% totally, absolutely, positively correct! Whenever I'm working late and fatigue is setting in, I just listen to this song and I'm wide awake in 10 seconds!

  • Totally argree - a real pick-me-up song.

got tons of radio play here in Ireland at the time.

  • Thanks! It picks me up when I'm dragging, too ; )!

  • I will never understand HOW this song got shafted so badly on the charts (peaking at #29 on Billboard). Catchy tune, clever lyrics, terrific vocals -- what does a song have to do to get respect? And oldies stations ignore it, too.

IMHO, the best song ever to come from Sergio Mendes. It really deserves a better fate.

  • It really started to show how videos started to influence songs particular when the singer wasn't Sergio Mendes. They didn't put a video out and costs them. Because radio played this song all the time.

  • Solid Gold!! Oh my lord take me back to my youth!! I loved Andy Gibb as host.

  • Awesome song. Takes me back immediately to that summer, and I don't want to leave.

  • Great lost 80's song. But it sure does date itself and the era with the line, "your telephone service says you're out again". Answering services, I remember 'em. You were cool if you had one and if you had one of those extra long spiral phone cords that reached across three rooms from your wall phone. Atleast until it got tangled into three or four knots. Good song, though.

  • This song brings back very fond memories!

  • Cool video. I really miss the 80's.

  • I used to own a strip bar back in the 80's. This song was a regular track on our hit list. Sergio Mendes came down to help us open our second strip bar in Dallas in 1983. For the opening ceremony, Sergio Mendes played this song. The strippers were getting it on with the bar staff in the back rooms while it was playing. All these memories, its amazing. The 80s were the best decade EVER. Now I'm older and wiser, but I will never forget those strip bar days !!

  • We have all noticed that Joe Pizzulo is not given the credit he deserves

  • he performed in manila with lou pardini ..wow really had a time of my life..best voices ever,,,pls someone post it...gracias!

  • Ernie Watts on sax

  • Can I hear Michael McDonald in the backround in this song?

  • Love the line "You think your in the clear but don't forget - that's exactly the way we met!"

  • Never noticed before but one of those background singers is Sieda Garrett who became a songwriter and singer in her own right.....even even wrote and sang some songs for and with Michael Jackson

  • I wanna hear Joe Pizzulo in a duet with James Ingram !!!!

  • what in the world do you know about James Ingram?

  • well.. a lot.. he's one of my idols.. why? ;P

  • @EXTENDED91 Yeah they both sound a lot alike don't they?! Never thought about that! LOL

  • Great voice ..... ashame he did'nt have more exposure

  • It is him singing Solid Gold was a lip syncing show. There was almost never a band at all most of the time, just the singer. That is the 80's. This is the orginal he is singing along to the track.

  • Joe has one of the best voices,,,,,,,,,,,,,he sings anything and it sure to sound great............Joe,,,,,i hope you read this,,,,,,you are one of my favorites,

  • You weren't born yet when this rode high on the pop charts. You clearly know what you're talking about, Einstein. Really. You're a real whiz kid.

  • Un temazo... lejos lo mejor.

  • I did it! I won two tickets to see Sergio in concert this Sat nite in Huntington, WV. We've loved them since the 60s! The best. Alibis is one my personal faves. Can't wait.

  • I have looked for this song for 25 yrs! THANKS!!!!

  • great classic!

the guy on keyboard is SERGIO MENDES!!!!

  • joe pizzulo has one of the greatest voices i have heard............

  • Is that Jeff Foxworthy on drums?

  • Holy cow! I am laughing my a** off...funny...I never noticed before, but when I looked...I laughed even HARDER!

  • I know my alibis are water-tight.

  • Nice one... Thanks for posting.. Really sounds good!!!

  • This is one of my favorite songs of the 80's and of all time. Thanks you SOO MUCH for posting it!

    Bennett

  • if any of you have not heard Joe Pizzulo's take this love, you gotta hear it!!! I think

Sergio also had a hand in that song, Joe sang it though I have the CD! Look to the right and you'll see joe "older though" in a blue sweater.

  • Absolutely Love this song!!! I wish there were dance places that would play this stuff and we can watch these oldies. Love Rick Ashtley's rick rollin stuff too. would play that too!

  • This song is undenialbly awesome!!!

    Solid Gold Dancers LMAO

Solid Gold with Marylin McCoo hosting; I can't believe this was entertaining to us, but we watched it and we LOVED it!

  • Joe co-owns a recording studio in North Hollywood, and occasionally sings for an international audience

  • do you know the name of the studio? Curious

I am near L.A. right now.

  • I love this song, but this is not Sergio singing isn't it? He's on the keyboard I think. I was 12 almost 13 when this song came out.

  • The singer is a dude named Joe Pizzulo. Sergio Mendes was (don't know if he still is) a musician/composer who wrote things that other people sang.

  • Love it!!!

  • OMG! I heard this song on a music channel and I had SO forgotten about it! I was only 4when it came out, but I remember it. And, I remember I LOVED IT!

  • Wow. A lot of people are right in saying that this song is a rare find. I heard it recently on satellite radio but hadn't heard it since in over 20 years. Why don't the soft rock/80's radio stations play it? It was a big hit in 1984!

  • I wish I was 17 when this song came out:-)....wonderful memories of hearing this song at the shore and screaming the words with all my buddies...those were the days....don't make music like this anymore...

  • I was 17 when this song came out, good memories

  • Joe sings the S--- out of this song ... one of their best productions in SM's long list of hits .... !

  • I love this song! does anyone know if Joe Pizzulo performs anymore? I think I love him. LoL

  • GREAT song. And eye candy with the Solid Gold Dancers too! :)

  • this song my mother likes.

  • One of my favorites songs but never actually see a video before. Great memories

Sergio Mendes is a fantastic singer.

  • Actually, it was Joe Pizzulo who sang this. Sergio Mendes is the keyboardist.

  • Wow, I didn't know that either! Thanks!

  • didnt know that!

    thanks for the tip!

  • Heard this song on XM as a 80's lost hit for the first time in over 20 yrs. Had a heck of a time finding this song anywhere, let alone with a video. Great song and a reminder of my first year in college and my 25th year reunion this year. Who is the blonde backup singer though? Anyone know.

  • The blonde is Marietta Waters.

  • Love this song; reminds me of my then girlfriend Sue, who is now my wife of 21 faithful years!

  • Great video. How well I remember July 14th 1984. The song has unhappy associations for me - literal interpretation of the lyrics. I didn't need that girlfriend anyway. I also liked Sergio Mendes doing Mas que Nada with the Solid Gold dancers. Priceless. On my tape of it I missed Deborah, who started things off. :-(

  • Nice song!!!! Thank you for posting. This song remembers me my first year at the University of Puerto Rico and my first sex experience.

  • HA! I finally found this little gem. Joe Pizzulo was great on lead vocal, the video is fun, and the song is so hot ... and so is Marilyn McCoo ...

  • I like Joe's outfit.

  • Look at littl' Sergio Mendes. I've been looking to buy this song for years. Awesome voice.

  • Its funny, of all the lost 80's hits I look for, this song is always near the top of my list. It should have been a much bigger hit than it originally was! Fantastic song!

  • I've listened to this song a million times and this performance sounds exactly like it. Would they really trot out all the band and instruments only to lip synch it?

  • I heard that Harry Nillsson sang on the recording. Or was it this guy? He has a fantastic voice!

  • It was this guy--Joe Pizzulo. He also sung the male lead on "Never Gonna Let You Go."

  • God, I miss the eighties........

  • Good song, but will never be Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.

  • This song sure brings back a lot of post-high school memories as one of my "Top 10" favorites! Also, I always thought Joe Pizzulo would be a huge star as well because of his fantastic voice. Thank you busson9!

  • Right on toviko, right on.
