the post-flashdance outfits, joe pizullo's voice and persona, the synthlines, the way the set looked incredibly dated even for 1984, sergio mendes' smile and how he scored big even after 20 years in the biz
everything about this is pure win. the only way they could have improved this is by adding paul engemann and joe esposito to the backing vocals
What a great groove. Michael McDonald would be proud of the hard hitting harmonies "AND YOU'RE WHERE you have to be tonight" ... Doobies were a huge influence in the hooks of this song. Go Sergio !!
@lurch321--..yeah! That woman on the right is Siedah Garrett-before she hooked up with Micheal Jackson on that 'BAD' album. Man in the Mirror, I Just Can't Stop Loving You....I'm just sayin'. : )
@stooge35 - That clapping sax player is Ernie Watts, at the time he was the first call sax man. His he's worked with everyone from Quincy to Lee Ritenour. My fave solo was on the Rolling Stones "waiting on a friend". I met him on his jazz tour back in '92. He's just cool like that,...groovin' with the music. LOL Personlly, I think they placed him in the wrong spot for the show.
A relatively minor hit (#29 on Billboard, #5 on Adult chart) but one of my favorites from the early 80's. I still have the 45 single of this around somewhere. As another song from the 80's says. They don't write em like that anymore....
I absolutely love this song to this day. Joe Pizzulo has such a killer voice, simply gorgeous performance. I remember buying this single the very first time I heard it on the radio and I played it to death.
Good Lord, it's Joe Pizzulo's voice that makes it, pity he hasn't gotten more individual coverage...he's been a prominent background singer for lots of top names for years.
@mtwilkins Absolutely agree with you. Sergio isn't singing...at the very least they could have mentioned Joe. And with a voice like his, he sould have been singing lead long before this.Dang, so '80s, but so sexy.
I have had the melody of the chorus stuck in my head for 26 years, only having heard it when it was released. That has to be one of the sweetest melodies, its sweetness only surpassed by the sight of Sergio grooving behind the keys.

@walterhawkins80 Thanks for helping people find this recording! I love this song and Dad and I both loved Sergio Mendez (and Brazil 66) since that many years ago (I was not even in school yet but loved their album he bought!)
@busson9 Can you help me get a download or an actual vinyl record or anything of this song? My husband has been searching for the song for years. Any help would be so appreciated!!!!!!!!!
i remembe this song when it first came out back in the early 80s, i was 24 when i got married to a lady from asia in her late 30s; we lived in the east hollywood area between los feliz and silver lake, a late disco faze was going on at that time, lots of bars and clubs and lots of young latino gay guys flooded the neighborhood, sunset & hyperion sts, and though i wasn't particularly gay at that time, being young and stoned most of the time, well, my marriage was doomed from the start.
I remember this song from when I was working as a disc jockey at a radio station in California. I loved playing it because the tune was so upbeat and fun to listen to.
Hey prolific, that must have been fun for you working as a d.j. back then. So many fun songs to play. I'm assuming you love music as I do. Are you doing anything in the music biz now or not. Cindy
I heard this first by a live cover band at Luke Air Force on July 4, 1984 as we were heading home as a family. Then the next day I finally heard the real version on the radio and loved it ever since. It just has that killer irresistible bassline. I think on most TV shows these performers actually perform it "live". However when it comes time to put the show on the air they lay audio over the "live" sound and then edit it. The lucky ones attend the taping and hear it live.
Sergio's "Alibis" is a great song, much underrated. But, geez, the lip syncing on "Solid Gold" always sucked. (And I grew up watching that program -- loved the dancing.) But, aaaahhh, it's nice to see Joe Pizzulo again! I say bring the mullet back, and bring on a reissued, remastered SERGIO MENDES CD for those of us who don't want to hunt down the 1983's LP's songs on iTunes.
Dear Ohearn22, You're 100% totally, absolutely, positively correct! Whenever I'm working late and fatigue is setting in, I just listen to this song and I'm wide awake in 10 seconds!
I will never understand HOW this song got shafted so badly on the charts (peaking at #29 on Billboard). Catchy tune, clever lyrics, terrific vocals -- what does a song have to do to get respect? And oldies stations ignore it, too.
IMHO, the best song ever to come from Sergio Mendes. It really deserves a better fate.
It really started to show how videos started to influence songs particular when the singer wasn't Sergio Mendes. They didn't put a video out and costs them. Because radio played this song all the time.
Great lost 80's song. But it sure does date itself and the era with the line, "your telephone service says you're out again". Answering services, I remember 'em. You were cool if you had one and if you had one of those extra long spiral phone cords that reached across three rooms from your wall phone. Atleast until it got tangled into three or four knots. Good song, though.
I used to own a strip bar back in the 80's. This song was a regular track on our hit list. Sergio Mendes came down to help us open our second strip bar in Dallas in 1983. For the opening ceremony, Sergio Mendes played this song. The strippers were getting it on with the bar staff in the back rooms while it was playing. All these memories, its amazing. The 80s were the best decade EVER. Now I'm older and wiser, but I will never forget those strip bar days !!
Never noticed before but one of those background singers is Sieda Garrett who became a songwriter and singer in her own right.....even even wrote and sang some songs for and with Michael Jackson
It is him singing Solid Gold was a lip syncing show. There was almost never a band at all most of the time, just the singer. That is the 80's. This is the orginal he is singing along to the track.
Joe has one of the best voices,,,,,,,,,,,,,he sings anything and it sure to sound great............Joe,,,,,i hope you read this,,,,,,you are one of my favorites,
I did it! I won two tickets to see Sergio in concert this Sat nite in Huntington, WV. We've loved them since the 60s! The best. Alibis is one my personal faves. Can't wait.
Absolutely Love this song!!! I wish there were dance places that would play this stuff and we can watch these oldies. Love Rick Ashtley's rick rollin stuff too. would play that too!
OMG! I heard this song on a music channel and I had SO forgotten about it! I was only 4when it came out, but I remember it. And, I remember I LOVED IT!
Wow. A lot of people are right in saying that this song is a rare find. I heard it recently on satellite radio but hadn't heard it since in over 20 years. Why don't the soft rock/80's radio stations play it? It was a big hit in 1984!
I wish I was 17 when this song came out:-)....wonderful memories of hearing this song at the shore and screaming the words with all my buddies...those were the days....don't make music like this anymore...
Heard this song on XM as a 80's lost hit for the first time in over 20 yrs. Had a heck of a time finding this song anywhere, let alone with a video. Great song and a reminder of my first year in college and my 25th year reunion this year. Who is the blonde backup singer though? Anyone know.
Great video. How well I remember July 14th 1984. The song has unhappy associations for me - literal interpretation of the lyrics. I didn't need that girlfriend anyway. I also liked Sergio Mendes doing Mas que Nada with the Solid Gold dancers. Priceless. On my tape of it I missed Deborah, who started things off. :-(
Its funny, of all the lost 80's hits I look for, this song is always near the top of my list. It should have been a much bigger hit than it originally was! Fantastic song!
I've listened to this song a million times and this performance sounds exactly like it. Would they really trot out all the band and instruments only to lip synch it?
This song sure brings back a lot of post-high school memories as one of my "Top 10" favorites! Also, I always thought Joe Pizzulo would be a huge star as well because of his fantastic voice. Thank you busson9!
the post-flashdance outfits, joe pizullo's voice and persona, the synthlines, the way the set looked incredibly dated even for 1984, sergio mendes' smile and how he scored big even after 20 years in the biz

Joe co-owns a recording studio in North Hollywood, and occasionally sings for an international audience

do you know the name of the studio? Curious
I am near L.A. right now.

I love this song, but this is not Sergio singing isn't it? He's on the keyboard I think. I was 12 almost 13 when this song came out.

The singer is a dude named Joe Pizzulo. Sergio Mendes was (don't know if he still is) a musician/composer who wrote things that other people sang.

Actually, it was Joe Pizzulo who sang this. Sergio Mendes is the keyboardist.

Heard this song on XM as a 80's lost hit for the first time in over 20 yrs. Had a heck of a time finding this song anywhere, let alone with a video. Great song and a reminder of my first year in college and my 25th year reunion this year. Who is the blonde backup singer though? Anyone know.

The blonde is Marietta Waters.

Love this song; reminds me of my then girlfriend Sue, who is now my wife of 21 faithful years!

Nice song!!!! Thank you for posting. This song remembers me my first year at the University of Puerto Rico and my first sex experience.

HA! I finally found this little gem. Joe Pizzulo was great on lead vocal, the video is fun, and the song is so hot ... and so is Marilyn McCoo ...

I like Joe's outfit.

Look at littl' Sergio Mendes. I've been looking to buy this song for years. Awesome voice.

I heard that Harry Nillsson sang on the recording. Or was it this guy? He has a fantastic voice!
teachmike2000 3 years ago
It was this guy--Joe Pizzulo. He also sung the male lead on "Never Gonna Let You Go."

Good song, but will never be Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.

This song sure brings back a lot of post-high school memories as one of my "Top 10" favorites! Also, I always thought Joe Pizzulo would be a huge star as well because of his fantastic voice. Thank you busson9!
