  • In fact, one of the things I like best about the Cannes cut is that even though it still says IV/V/VI, it feels more like one story. No recap means the story begins through the characters' eyes and we learn the world through them, with not nearly as bad of info dumps. I roll my eyes at Kelly's comments in this video, because the people who hated it at Cannes still hate the theatrical version. But for those who appreciate it, it is the stronger, sharper, more coherent AND weirder film.

  • Great movie, but the Cannes cut is so much better. Basically, if you're the kind of person who's going to hate it no matter what, the Cannes cut will be even worse, but if you appreciate it even slightly, the Cannes cut is a much better. It's long and more convoluted, but the pace is so much better, slowly introducing you to these people and this world. No dumb computer explanation for pre-2008 history, for example. And the Baron gets the best line in the film... and it got cut!

  • Its one of those films that provided you understand the concept, it's actually quite a novelty to see.

I personally really liked it, but I'm not going to argue against someone who didn't understand it, as I can understand why.

  • This guy is a GENIUS as a director and a writer!! It shows how backwards out society is when a movie like Southland Tales never actually makes it into the mainstream, but CRAP like 40 year old virgin, or some stupid Dramedy makes a ton of money.... Southland Tales is a look into the future,, we are already almost there,,, and will be there VERY soon,,,

  • southland tales was ten times better than that donnie darko tangent universe crap, kelly swung and missed before he hit a homer with southland tales

  • I want the Cannes version of the Movie on DVD/Blue-ray. It´s a great Movie

  • southland tales is a mix between pulp fiction, starship troopers and donnie darko! it's so genius that ot looks like crap!

    but like Swift said:

When a true genius appears in this world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him

  • Bad acting, HORRIBLE SHOTS, AND YES THE STORY WTF? BLADERUNNER, make something like that.

  • pretentious piece of shit

  • Southland Tales is one a few films to ever be boo-ed at Cannes...fuck 'em.

  • It was a very well done job in my opinion, the casting was perfect, the dialogue, the soundtracks. Very well done. And it was really funny in a dark way at some times. Try to smoke some some while watching. It cracks you up and keeps you on the edge and thinking.

  • Masterpiece! I wanted to watch it again right away when the credits rolled. I stood up and applauded in my living room. It attacks our society's TV/movie star worshipping lifestyle, and the "I want it now" mentality that damn near everyone has now, which also explains the bad reviews and slow take.

  • This movie is amazing but you have to realize that it is the book of Revolations on shrooms... It didn't have the same darko style but it still had the iconic music that after you seen the movie every time you hear a song in it you think of the scene

  • he set a very high standard with donnie darko but his style really doesnt fit southland tales, and i didnt like it, and im not suprised he lost so much money on it

  • i think that richard kelly really made a interesting movie who makes u thing on the sense of being a north american. southland tale in my opinion not only was great it was the brazil of the 21st centrury. and i really hope that richard keep making masterpieces like thisn and not the commercial shit that u see on hollywood

  • I'm in love with this man. Seriously, if I could only have one wish it would be to meet him.

  • Honest hearted question: Can this person make a movie without "the end of the world" and "parallel universe" in it?

I've known of this guy for three hours and these seem to be well worn plot devices.

    I don't care if he's a genius. I care if he's responsible.

  • @GuitarGare "I care if he's responsible?" What is that even supposed to mean?

  • @TheArmy19D

Actors, writers, directors and film makers are all guilty of putting "constructs" in front of people that play with their minds, and, under the guise of "fulfilling their craft" regardless of morals portrayed, realities suspended or trodded on.

If someone puts a million dollars in your face for a two week shoot to be an axe murderer, you're going to do it, regardless of resultant nightmares of the viewers. Irresponsible filmmaking is just a fact of life. I was speaking ideally.

  • @GuitarGare I still do not see how he is being irresponsible. Are you saying the ideas in this movie are dangerous?

  • @TheArmy19D I guess the best way I can put it to you is this: I saw "Bonnie and Clyde" when I was 12. It messed me up for life. It was a well crafted movie, but in the end, there was some haunting imagery and a breakdown of sensibilities of a young boy. This is "irresponsible" film making, and the way of the world.

  • @GuitarGare You let a movie mess you up for life? You must be very impressionable. When I was12 I watched movies like Dawn of the Dead, Evil Dead, The Toxic Avenger, and the Excorcist. I turned out just fine. I guess it all depends on you weak your mental state and perception of reality is. Bonnie and Clyde? If that movie came out today it would probably be PG-13.

  • @TheArmy19D

You are correct. But I didn't "let it". I see now I'm talking to a young person.

Please remember, the world was a different place in 1966.

This thread is now saturated for me. I did 12 years on usenet, so talk if you want, but I'm too old for this.

  • @GuitarGare You must have lived a very sheltered life. In some places in the world traumatic experiences for 12 year olds are seeing your parents hacked to death with machettes by rebel forces, having your village shelled, being sold into sexual slavery, or being handed an AK-47 and told you must commit genocide. But I guess fake blood can be traumatic for a spoiled little snot like you.

  • Rented it... Buying it... Watching it... more then 3 times =D

  • This movie is so beautiful in so many ways... some people just don't get it, you kinda have to be a sci-fi nerd to love it I guess...

  • Worst fucking movie EVER!!!!!!!!!

  • Omg i want that shirt...

And Richard Kelly, nom nom nom.

  • Movie would have been good if i didnt star Dwayne "The Terrible Actor" Johnson. Darko was one of my favorite films though

  • without him, there would be no Southland Tales

  • What religion is Richard K? Just out of interest.

  • @pipolo15161 lynch makes retarded non-sensical films.

  • I love the concept and the idea's that are presented but I hate the comedic bullshit laced within it. The point of the film, I assume, is to fixate on social change or our world will be ruined by several demonstrated factors. And then to make us somewhat feel or understand what we may lose if we continue in this fashion.

  • This wasn't a very good film. It seemed like he had taken a bunch of random elements and themes, tossed them in together, and came out with crap. I like Donnie Darko a lot and I wanted to like this film too, but I too believe that Kelly did wayyyyy too much in this movie. I liked the fact that I didn't want to see all of the christmas movies that were predictably releasing at the time, but I just was even more disappointed at this. He is trying to defend this movie, but he sounds like HE'S lost.

  • Yeah i was baked when i watched this but i have the feeling that you could be stone sober an still not understand it fully. I'm just gonna follow Kelly's advice and watch it again, even more blazed :). But i did like it a lot whatever the fuck it is!

  • i didn't get it tht much and i fucking loved it

  • Why? Why did you love it? Did you love the concept of it? The plot? The lack of a plot? Buffy acting like a pornstar? I just want to know why you love it. Enlighten me please......

  • I did get it, it's not that complicated, it just has a lot going on. If you understand the scientific concepts the movie is anchored on, and then you see how Kelly is tying those greater concepts into more human stories (and there's a lot of them going on at once), it'd make sense. It's a brilliant mess of a film.

  • This film didn't work, it's a shame cause after Donnie Darko I wanted to like it. He's defending it here but I bet he knows it's seriously flawed. He's not the first director to over reach and come up short.

  • fuck u

  • You're obviously an idiot.

  • This movie was very under rated.

It is a fantastic story which makes you think about you and your life style.

The style of the film is also individual which I love.

  • thaaaankyou

  • I think people forget much of the comedic element to Southland Tales. I'd like to see all of the Cannes cut of the film, and read the graphic novels.

This film will become at least a cult classic in due time.

  • it´s a movie about chaos. It is chaotic, in consequence.

It will gain its desserved respect (or even cult), eventually.

  • LOL 23 Ratings

  • This movie was unwatchable... Donnie Darko however was awesome.

  • what a mess, a godawful mess. and utterly pretentious in its casting (trying to say 'im so good a director i can use tacky tv actors and still be oh so profound...') and its so called philosophy and politics are just half assed and lazy. its a pity cos donnie darko was class. he jast got way way ahead of himself. hubris is the word, the exact thing he was trying to satirize. so the only irony was unintentional. and not even so bad its good.

  • I like the film because its all over the place, as is life, and it has philosophic questions for different aspects, in general, of society. This movie could have used a better narrative script. Overall this movie asks for more participation then your average film watcher is willing to give.

  • Well said! I just can't believe how young Richard Kelly is. I never would have pictured this guy to be responsible for two of my favorite films.

  • C'mon man, it's a shame but this movie does not work, it's awful. I admire him for what he tried to do but he failed, big time.

  • u fail

  • no man, your just fucking stupid and can't comprehend shit.

    :)

  • this movie was a masterpiece

  • Agreed.

  • Its weird, cos i loved this film, but i still dont know why!

  • the movie was good. anyone thinking otherwise is welcome to their opinion, but that opinion sucks worse than your take on this film. there's my two cents.

  • I realize this movie is horrible, but that's why it's so great.

  • There's so much negative publicity about this movie. To each his own. This movie seems to be based on 100's of extremely advanced principles that perfectly come together. I watched it just once I understood it fully. It is a sensory overload. What else could someone describe a realistic potential end to this universe that takes place in just a few hours. These concepts could be spread across 100's of generations. To cram them into this amount of time is pure genius. An Einstein of film.

  • Its becuase his film actuly makes people have to stop and think, which most movie veiwers now numbed and need things spelt out for them, dont understand the complexity of the film becuase they feel instead of reading the graphic novel our society can make the movie which makes us not have to think about anything anymore which is slowly makeing our culture illiterate and not have to think and not have to try and streach the mind and exersize the mind

  • You would think that someone talking about "making people think" would have decent grammar.

  • im sorry i was kinda thinking faster than i typed so i just tried to get it all out

  • Irrelative, this person has a point.

  • You are right....there are many themes and political subtext throughout this entire film. I enjoyed it, but I still think the main plot-line is really not that hard to follow....

  • i think i must read the precuel

    :S

maybe thet would help me understand it better

  • At least this guy is trying to make a different type of movie.Hats off to this guy. Donnie Darko was fucking awesome.

Im so sick of the movie industry these days all the movies fucking suck. There all big money production and no substance.Totally uncreative. Thanks for being creative Richard!

  • You have horrible taste you shitty emo.

  • How is that emo?

    At all?

Emo is a culture, you idiot. Anyone encouraging creative thought is not emo by any means. That's a stupid "word" aswell, considering all human's are emotional.

    What defines good taste?

    Majority belief?

    Cinematic aspects?

    This is debatable.

  • Richard seems like a cool guy and Darko was a great movie but Southland Tales just sucked. He can say it's sensory overload but even if you don't know what's going on the individual scenes aren't even good.

  • I don't see how anyone didn't follow the plot of Southland Tales. Was it that complicated? Cause I enjoyed it

  • You must be an insane bitch.

  • that girl has an awesome job and shirt

  • Wow, she had some great questions and her last question was the clincher.

  • the movie was amazing.period. it doesnt even warrant multiple views to understand it. if you feel like you needed to do such a thing than maybe your not the right type of a movie goer for this one.

  • richard kelly is so hot

  • omg yes

  • I saw this the week it debuted at the Arclight in Hollywood. Not a single person walked out. I completely understood the movie and adored it. Richard Kelly just has the unfortunate task of not making movies for stupid americans.

  • Yes, it made the mistake of asking the viewer to possibly try and figure out what the movie was trying to say, rather than just force feeding it to you while you eat popcorn and fart and throw up on your American Eagle t-shirt.

It makes me sad to hear things like stramengula's comment.

  • Should I interrupt the pretentious backslapping session between you two and let you know how entirely inaccurate what you're saying is...or should I just leave to feed your own ego and believe that this movie failed due to the supposed "dumbness" of the public that pretentious and immature people believe in...but that doesn't actually exist?

  • Well whatever, fuck you. The point is that the movie was targeted toward a niche market, and was unfairly rejected because people were to quick to judge. I'm accusing that niche market - people who watch 'pretentious' art flicks - of being dumb.

  • If you think I'm 'pretentious' for liking the movie and being upset that it seemed to go over peoples head or under peoples radar, then you can go fuck yourself. You can fuck yourself for every time you used that piece of shit word 'pretentious', and you can suck my shit you retard-cocksucker.

  • Nice name troll.

  • I've seen the movie yesterday night. Well...I'm sorry, I am a fan of Donny Darko, I've been watching it again and again 5 days in a row, but this last movie is just horrible. It's supposed to be ironic, or at least I think so, but I didn't get the plot, I didn't catch the point, I didn't like the actors, all was really confused...Very disappointing. Many people left the cinema during the movie. It's a shit.

  • why would u see a movie again and again if you don't like it?

  • I have seen the film and I am really impressed by it. It is very ambitious. Its novelty and love for adventure definitely got me on its side. Bravo Kelly! you have surprised us again.

  • who hired this interviewer???

  • I saw this movie last night. I do wish that it had the same magic as Donnie Darko. "Showed it to the toughest audience in the world" and then "added and it all worked out for the best" hmmmm. Still very odd movie. I found it odd. I guess I wanted Donnie Darko?
