In fact, one of the things I like best about the Cannes cut is that even though it still says IV/V/VI, it feels more like one story. No recap means the story begins through the characters' eyes and we learn the world through them, with not nearly as bad of info dumps. I roll my eyes at Kelly's comments in this video, because the people who hated it at Cannes still hate the theatrical version. But for those who appreciate it, it is the stronger, sharper, more coherent AND weirder film.
Great movie, but the Cannes cut is so much better. Basically, if you're the kind of person who's going to hate it no matter what, the Cannes cut will be even worse, but if you appreciate it even slightly, the Cannes cut is a much better. It's long and more convoluted, but the pace is so much better, slowly introducing you to these people and this world. No dumb computer explanation for pre-2008 history, for example. And the Baron gets the best line in the film... and it got cut!
This guy is a GENIUS as a director and a writer!! It shows how backwards out society is when a movie like Southland Tales never actually makes it into the mainstream, but CRAP like 40 year old virgin, or some stupid Dramedy makes a ton of money.... Southland Tales is a look into the future,, we are already almost there,,, and will be there VERY soon,,,
It was a very well done job in my opinion, the casting was perfect, the dialogue, the soundtracks. Very well done. And it was really funny in a dark way at some times. Try to smoke some some while watching. It cracks you up and keeps you on the edge and thinking.
Masterpiece! I wanted to watch it again right away when the credits rolled. I stood up and applauded in my living room. It attacks our society's TV/movie star worshipping lifestyle, and the "I want it now" mentality that damn near everyone has now, which also explains the bad reviews and slow take.
This movie is amazing but you have to realize that it is the book of Revolations on shrooms... It didn't have the same darko style but it still had the iconic music that after you seen the movie every time you hear a song in it you think of the scene
he set a very high standard with donnie darko but his style really doesnt fit southland tales, and i didnt like it, and im not suprised he lost so much money on it
i think that richard kelly really made a interesting movie who makes u thing on the sense of being a north american. southland tale in my opinion not only was great it was the brazil of the 21st centrury. and i really hope that richard keep making masterpieces like thisn and not the commercial shit that u see on hollywood
Actors, writers, directors and film makers are all guilty of putting "constructs" in front of people that play with their minds, and, under the guise of "fulfilling their craft" regardless of morals portrayed, realities suspended or trodded on.
If someone puts a million dollars in your face for a two week shoot to be an axe murderer, you're going to do it, regardless of resultant nightmares of the viewers. Irresponsible filmmaking is just a fact of life. I was speaking ideally.
@TheArmy19D I guess the best way I can put it to you is this: I saw "Bonnie and Clyde" when I was 12. It messed me up for life. It was a well crafted movie, but in the end, there was some haunting imagery and a breakdown of sensibilities of a young boy. This is "irresponsible" film making, and the way of the world.
@GuitarGare You let a movie mess you up for life? You must be very impressionable. When I was12 I watched movies like Dawn of the Dead, Evil Dead, The Toxic Avenger, and the Excorcist. I turned out just fine. I guess it all depends on you weak your mental state and perception of reality is. Bonnie and Clyde? If that movie came out today it would probably be PG-13.
@GuitarGare You must have lived a very sheltered life. In some places in the world traumatic experiences for 12 year olds are seeing your parents hacked to death with machettes by rebel forces, having your village shelled, being sold into sexual slavery, or being handed an AK-47 and told you must commit genocide. But I guess fake blood can be traumatic for a spoiled little snot like you.
I love the concept and the idea's that are presented but I hate the comedic bullshit laced within it. The point of the film, I assume, is to fixate on social change or our world will be ruined by several demonstrated factors. And then to make us somewhat feel or understand what we may lose if we continue in this fashion.
This wasn't a very good film. It seemed like he had taken a bunch of random elements and themes, tossed them in together, and came out with crap. I like Donnie Darko a lot and I wanted to like this film too, but I too believe that Kelly did wayyyyy too much in this movie. I liked the fact that I didn't want to see all of the christmas movies that were predictably releasing at the time, but I just was even more disappointed at this. He is trying to defend this movie, but he sounds like HE'S lost.
Yeah i was baked when i watched this but i have the feeling that you could be stone sober an still not understand it fully. I'm just gonna follow Kelly's advice and watch it again, even more blazed :). But i did like it a lot whatever the fuck it is!

Even he doesn't know what the fuck this movie is about. I just watched this movie last night and wanted to bash my own skull in to forget this garbage. It sux because I loved Donnie Darko. This is one of those movies people will say they liked and if you disagree they'll just say "you just didn't get it" but there is nothing to get. It is just a horrible star studded piece of shit. Richard Kelly owes me two and a half hours of my life and I want them back.......
Why? Why did you love it? Did you love the concept of it? The plot? The lack of a plot? Buffy acting like a pornstar? I just want to know why you love it. Enlighten me please......
I did get it, it's not that complicated, it just has a lot going on. If you understand the scientific concepts the movie is anchored on, and then you see how Kelly is tying those greater concepts into more human stories (and there's a lot of them going on at once), it'd make sense. It's a brilliant mess of a film.
This film didn't work, it's a shame cause after Donnie Darko I wanted to like it. He's defending it here but I bet he knows it's seriously flawed. He's not the first director to over reach and come up short.
what a mess, a godawful mess. and utterly pretentious in its casting (trying to say 'im so good a director i can use tacky tv actors and still be oh so profound...') and its so called philosophy and politics are just half assed and lazy. its a pity cos donnie darko was class. he jast got way way ahead of himself. hubris is the word, the exact thing he was trying to satirize. so the only irony was unintentional. and not even so bad its good.
I like the film because its all over the place, as is life, and it has philosophic questions for different aspects, in general, of society. This movie could have used a better narrative script. Overall this movie asks for more participation then your average film watcher is willing to give.

Honest hearted question: Can this person make a movie without "the end of the world" and "parallel universe" in it?
I've known of this guy for three hours and these seem to be well worn plot devices.
I don't care if he's a genius. I care if he's responsible.
