Were those guys actually charged with anything or was this just FIU's upper authorities trying to strike fear in their students so that none of this will happen again??? Think people the men and women in uniform are just following orders!! Who is to blame for FIU students being silenced??! The same people you help fund by going to their school!! If you want to make a real difference become them then intellectually defeat them.
I can agree with you to certain an extent. The FIU cops had to do their job. Surely had FIU called MDPD, the outcome would have been the same. The arrests would have happened. I was upset as I witnessed the event because I know this was peaceful protest. The police I assure you did not break any law either. It's their job to maintain order--by orders of someone who did not want that on their property. My argument was that the arrests come from the top. Shame on FIU first and foremost.
@dovemagic i don't think anyone wants to put any more blame on the police than necessary, however they swear an oath of office to uphold the constitution of the US. Taking blank orders without reference to any specific rules or regulations prohibiting people from assembling on campus is not their job.
The seven arrested were not told their charges until they were booked hours later, after being transferred from FIU to county holding.
The cops refused to state what charges they were arresting for
@premitive1 Part 1. Interestingly everyone likes to bring up constitutional rights for everything. First and foremost, this is not about a single cop or department’s judgment. It’s wasn’t a routine traffic stop where a cop decides to give you a ticket/arrest you for something based on their own judgment. If you were on my property and I asked you to leave and you refused, then I have the right to get you off. I’d call the cops and I hope they did their job and enforce your removal.
@premitive1 Part 2 FIU decided that where the protestors met was unacceptable and they wanted them out. The cops enforced the wishes of the “owner”. Therefore no constitutional rights have been broken. They were told to leave and where to go continue. They also never requested such permit. They didn't so the police may go ahead and arrest. Now, we all know the good ‘ole charge of disturbing the peace/disorderly conduct is what they were arrested for.
@premitive1 Lastly, Miranda rights do not have to be read unless the person is investigated. What upsets me the most of all this now is that the cops could have released them right away with no charges. But FIU ASKED them to press charges..which they did. Shame on FIU all the freaking way.
no, they were not told to leave until after people had been arrested. this is something i'm trying to make clear, there was not an announcement that the assembly should disperse.
What's more, the charges were interfering with an educational institution, not "unlawful assembly" or "disorderly conduct" or what have you.
I don't know who owns the school, it would be very disturbing if it's the administration.
@premitive1 You seem like a rational/intelligent person &your comments are appreciated. I can tell you're as passionate about the event as I am. I'm a student and I was angry. As for the charges, I was merely pointing out whatever they could have/would have been. Also they were told to go more than once. Maybe not all heard, but it was done. You should be disturbed, as I mentioned, this was in fact in administrative hands the whole time. What's worse IMO is that they asked them to press charges.
@dovemagic I was there. I will attest that there was not an announcement made to the assembly by police. When I was asked by an officer to help move the group, he never specified during his request that failure to comply would result in arrests.
"They" were never told to leave. I don't know where you get this impression. As an eyewitness I contest, no warning given, especially not a 5 minute warning.
Arrests began immediately after an announcement was made by a participant that we were leaving!
The concentration of wealth in the hands of a few is weakening our democracy, so it's important that the protesters get arrested for no charge to show the flaws in the system. These kind of arrests never would have taken place back in the 1990's, when cops were better trained and there was much greater awareness of people's civil rights.
What has disturbed me most about these posts has been the blame on the police and the criticizing of their "asses" and or weight. What The Bloody F* doe that have to do with the matter at hand? A peaceful protest was demanded to be shut down. Unfortunately they have to do it with the cops who in turn must do their job. ATTN: Protesters...find out who on top wants this shut down and criticize them! ;)
Our school president released an email informing the university that they did not have the approval prior to their demonstration. Also, it wasn't occupy FIU, it was an art festival. They were arrested because they were told several times to leave(by FIU police) because their sound equipment would be disrupting classes right behind them. Seeing as I pay tuition, I'd be pissed if my class was interrupted due to their music. When they ignored several warnings, it was then they were arrested.
@ladiiice421 take a look at some of my other videos.
FIU often has events which are much louder than the music festival would have been and you don't ever complain about those.
Of course people would be angry is their class was interrupted, but that was not going to happen. Please, use critical thinking before drinking the kool-aid.
@premitive1 Those events are NEVER anywhere near classrooms or during class times. The DM pit has a classroom situated right behind it. Second floor GC has sound proof windows near the pit so event noise does not reach classrooms.
hey Kris, this annual parade, the one I have video of here in my account passed right by DM. That means that every "classroom situated right behind" would have heard the same marching band I recorded in my video. It was done between 1 and 2 pm on that day. So yeah, you're wrong.
since most occupy ppl not all are obama supporters they should know that their lord and saviour signed a bill aka NDAA that allows for US citizens to be arrested if seen as threat to the state or a political dissadent and be can be thrown in prison without and judge or jury so if ur in the occupy movement and u support not only obama but the establiment in general jus remember who took away ur rights when ur getting arrested for nothing
It's funny to me how people love to criticize cops for doing their job. Whether you agree with the protest or not, there are always 2 sides of a coin. I agree wholeheartedly that people have the right to a peaceful protest, but they need to blame the higher-ups in FIU who are in fact the ones that asked the cops to make the protest stop. Remember boys and girls, every time you have an emergency, you dial 911 for those/any cops to come and help you. <3
@dovemagic It's funny because officers of the law also have the ability to perceive, analyze situations, and make conclusions based on those situations. Those arrests were unconstitutional. It is a shame of the PD, shame of our President, shame of our "higher ups".
@TheCF221 you are clearly so informed about the whole situation and make comments that are so meaningful about the situation at hand. Clearly you must be representing the banana republic of ignorance! Just sayin' :)
@TheCF221 Bless your heart- you missed my point. I guess we can attribute that to your lack of basic reading comprehension skills. Let me explain this in laymen’s terms so you can follow. My comment was not trying to defend an opposing view (I did that within my other posts). It was directed at you and solely intended for you. That’s why it read: “@TheCF221”. It was a response to your obviously ridiculous comment that had nothing to do with what happened on the campus.
@TheCF221 Although your original post made me chuckle for a second, it reminded me of those teenagers who spam every video on YT with comments like: “Beiber sucks!” Of course the videos are unrelated the child, but they can’t help their little brains from posting stupidity. I do congratulate you on your attempt to respond to me intelligently. It’s great to start the day with a good laugh. Cute!
This is an absolute travesty of the American justice system. Our free speech is continuously being chipped away at with no sign of a halt in sight. So called "Democratic" leaders have failed to address this issue head on.
A democracy cannot exist without healthy discourse among its citizens. Vote for someone who will stand up for whats right rather than sign into law policies that continue to eat away at free speech. Vote for Rocky Anderson and the Justice Party.
The police force acted like they were in a banana republic. Just wait till the details of this come out. The occupiers were following directions, cops kept on saying "not good enough" and putting up more hoops for them to jump through. Plus the area where they were protesting was a "free speech area" where a permit wasn't needed. If OccupyFIU has lawyers, you have a good case here. Serious civil liberties violations.
This is absurd. I'm going to be registering at FIU soon, and I can't believe the way campus police handled this. I am at a complete loss for words.. there was absolutely no reason for them to be arrested! I have personally run a CONCERT by this area of the campus, and it's good to know that the next time I do that, I might just end up in a jail cell.
I always see these people using that pit. They never cause problems or attract more attention then necessary. For it to suddenly fall apart like this is very suspicious - someone at FIU wants to tear them apart.
By the way, we used megaphones before in campus many times inn our rallies throughout campus...why aren't we allowed this time?..why?...who is sending this orders to end occupy FIU?
