Unless you like pain, I'd stay away. There is sufficient documentation for a complete beginner to do it, (use the generic kernel rather than your own) but it takes a long time.
If you just want to know what Linux can be like, a live cd like ubuntu or mint is a good choice.
@Raffix394 It's possible for a complete beginner to install Gentoo in the same way that it's possible for an infinite number of monkeys typing on an infinite number of keyboards given an infinite amount of time to write a novel. Gentoo is not appropriate for a beginner to install unless they have extensive experience with Unixes and have access to documentation or an install tutorial. Start with something easy, get some experience, and then ease your way into it.

I am wondering also at the end of the day when class is over, do you go home and use WINDOWS or MAC or do you stick with GENTOO so you dont get rusty on your coding and stuff like that?
Actually, no, as much as I'd like to get new hardware, the economy is forcing us to our original model of accepting donated, second-hand computers. Regardless, Windows still brings more pain and cost than benefit IMHO. Maybe Windows 7 will change that.
I've personally used Linux almost exclusively since 2000. I own 2 gaming machines that dual-boot to Windows, but since I rarely play games, 98% of the time I use Linux. My main use for Windows is to watch LOST online :-)
Wow, I guess second hand is better than nothing I guess you know?
I would hate to see that though... You guys are teaching kids the IN AND OUT of Linux and then all of a sudden switch BACK TO WINDOWS. I just dont think I could see that I mean you have been teaching LINUX for so long now, It would just seem painful that you would have to switch back over and forget all your LINUX knowlege and have to learn windows 7 to teach to your class I mean if OPEN SOURCE works why not stay with it?
Let me take a minute to address a couple of reoccuring comments:
1) Gentoo is no harder to use than any other Linux distribution. There is more work in setting it up, but our users USE Linux, they don't install it or configure it, nor should they in our setting. I provide Ubuntu for those wishing to use Linux at home.
2) We do use binary packages - the difference is that I build the optimized binaries and use those for all our workstations. With Ubuntu, someone else builds them.
i kinda agree... he shouldnt be talking about source codes and installing programs... he should be talking about why linux is better for the kids, and how by using open source programs instead of spending $1000+ on programs we can direct that money to more educating
Gentoo is a great distro. In fact it's my favourite distro. But it's not as simple using it as they show here. For Linux beginners it's much better to use a simple to use distribution like Ubuntu or Mint.
All Linux distros include, or have easy access to, a powerful suite called Open Office, which is free, and has Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher etc equivalents which can read and write MS Office files. You can download it for free to run on Windows too - and stop having to PAY for MS Office.
Not necessarily. Most modern operating systems use pre-compiled binaries (be they .deb, .rpm, .exe, whatever, so compiling the source code from scratch is not very common nowadays. At least for non-programmers.
I currently manage 5000 nodes on a windows only network. I've been doing this stuff with windows for years, whether it be install software to a lab, or reimage an entire school at night via wake on lan (scheduled so no one is even around). That said we too are currently looking at migrating to Linux mainly because the writing is on the wall for Windows. It's not the cost as most software for education is very cheap including software from Microsoft.
Why Gentoo? I found Slackware and Arch Linux to be just as configurable, stable, secure, and fast. You get the everything that you would get with Gentoo, but you don't have to go through the toil of Gentoo's long installation. Correct me if I'm wrong, I am very familiar with Slackware and Gentoo but not so much with Arch. Gentoo is great but I think it would too time consuming for school.
Regarding comments about Windows / Kubuntu coming with a calculator installed - that's part of the point, these things tend to come with a LOT of things installed, more things than we need, especially since we want a responsive, fast OS for our older equipment with less RAM.
Even Kubuntu has some strange dependency locks that force the user to have things installed that they have no use for.
Once you master Gentoo, it's no harder than anything else IMHO.
Once you master Shaolin Kung Fu, it's no harder than anything else, IMHO. XD
Why Gentoo, out of curiosity? I'd figure that schools would go for something with less of a learning curve (e.g., Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS).
If you're at a point at which adding a calculator application creates (or is assumed to create) unacceptable excess strain on the system, your box has some issues outside the scope of the OS. What kind of machines are you using?
And if you really need something fast, nothing beat a minimal GNU/Linux (Slackware, Gentoo, Puppy etc..) or *BSD (OpenBSD is a good example there, maybe NetBSD too, but I haven't tried it).
I use OpenBSD on my desktop and it's quite fast. Thinking about Slackware or Gentoo on my laptop(s).
We have tried Kubuntu and found it more work to configure for our particular network needs than Gentoo. We used Gentoo to build our own binary "distro", and I can install "our" Gentoo on a new computer with less work than any other distro I've tried - I just answer a couple of questions and go get coffee!
That said, when a student wants a copy of Linux for their computer - I give them Kubuntu :-)
Initially, yes. But if used to build a custom distro for a large network of similar computers with similar goals, that upfront work is paid back 10 fold in ease of installation, configuration, performance, stability, and security. (IMHO anyway)
He doesn't have to write all of that software, the open source/free software community does. Think of Gentoo's portage as a package manager, but instead of using pre-compiled binary packages, it fetches source code and compiles and installs it.
what's the point of compiling it yourself? Let's say I want to install Audacious, whats the difference between Portage compiling it and having APT get a pre compiled version
The program they are using is called distcc. You can use as many computers to compile a single program as you like, as long as they are all using linux (or for the mac users, OSX. check your xcode preferences).
You should look for a distribution supporting the PowerPC architecture. I know Debian and Gentoo do... Ubuntu might, but I wouldn't recommend using Ubuntu for that application anyway.
distcc (distributed C compiler) is what is used to for sharing compiling load. It can be added to the /etc/make.conf file, or when compiling manually (make bzImage, for example) just add CC=distcc after 'make' on the command line. Each computer must run a distccd server for it to work.
i dont care what type of computer i use. i usually just use computers for chatting, vlogging, blogging, wikipedia.. thats it.. &music.. thats why im still on vista..
I had to reinstall vista (don't beat me please..) and something has happened, I think vista has deleted a file that allows the pc to "see" 2 OS, vista and Gentoo, so now I have to find a way to see gentoo and make this file, the problem is that I've not informatic knowledge....I have a lot of work to do.
Windows always has to be #1. When you installed Vista, it wrote over your boot loader. Always install Windows first then your linux distro when you are doing a dual boot.
Reinstall your bootloader. Vista has modified the MBR (the thing that tells your PC where the operating systems are on the hard drive) in a way that keeps your bootloader from working properly. Basically, it is skipping past the bootloader and going straight to Vista. Just reinstall the bootloader or (at worst) reinstall Linux.
I don't know if I'd call Gentoo "easy," it's notorious for being one of the harder distributions to install. It's awesome that they're using the network as a farm to compile programs. That sysadmin is a dude.
at least these kids will grow up with some skillz. Teach linux and then can come out of high school making more than their parents! Go gentoo. Props for getting the school to let you use linux.
Yeah, it's kind of like what they say about Red Hat: if you learn any other distro, you learn that distro, but if you learn Red Hat, you learn Linux. I think something similar can be said of Gentoo.
Yeah, I'm all for Linux, AND all for Christian schools, so this video OWNS! (Running Fedora Core 5 over here, but i'd like to try out gentoo when i get my hands on some different hardware. Not looking forward to messing up my bootloader messing around with partitions:p)
i wonder if a calculator install ever needs a reboot. I dont even know if Linux users have ever used Windows. I have, I know Linux is good but not for everything.

You decide every thing ! - what kernel to install what packages you have on your system.
ALL the installation are specifically complied for YOUR specific chipset!
After the installation you will have the best/most compatible OS for your SPECIFIC system!
Gentoo is all about performance.
The performance is unbelievable ...there is no other OS like it!

Once you master anything, it's not hard to use.
GNU/Linux and UNIX is great :)

Wow!
The Fundies found their way to Linux!
I think their getting smarter...
ByT3R 3 years ago
Smart enough to know that it is "they're getting smarter" not "their getting smarter" (sorry, couldn't resist).
extraketchup 3 years ago
Yes, English is not my first language, I learned it in school, so I still make small grammar mistakes.

its just hilarious when local news tries to report on something they don't understand
Jaynusofsinope 3 years ago 7
i know!!! i hate explaining computer things that ppl won't understand, such as source code. it's painful to watch my mom try to fix a computer
daisyfoofpoof 3 years ago
i still prefer ubuntu
daisyfoofpoof 3 years ago
We have tried Kubuntu and found it more work to configure for our particular network needs than Gentoo. We used Gentoo to build our own binary "distro", and I can install "our" Gentoo on a new computer with less work than any other distro I've tried - I just answer a couple of questions and go get coffee!
That said, when a student wants a copy of Linux for their computer - I give them Kubuntu :-)
extraketchup 3 years ago
you can build a custum distro for any linux not just - like the sourcecode recipe
blmartech 3 years ago
no no no, i said ubuntu not kubuntu there's a huge difference. kubuntu sucks. from best to worst: ubuntu-->xubuntu-->kubuntu
daisyfoofpoof 3 years ago
gentoo ?!?!?!?! AAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! WORK!!!!!!!
thablackmarkit 3 years ago
Initially, yes. But if used to build a custom distro for a large network of similar computers with similar goals, that upfront work is paid back 10 fold in ease of installation, configuration, performance, stability, and security. (IMHO anyway)
extraketchup 3 years ago
what admin in there RIGHT mind and install gentoo when theres kubuntu! can you say no life? lol windows comes with a calculator by default.
thablackmarkit 3 years ago
LOL.
HAHAHHAHHAHHAHA.
the news lady is so NOT versed in it... she doesnt even deserve to report on it cuz shes CLEARLY not giving the technology justice.
anyways yah, respect+ for the guy administering that securely. Hopefully his setup doesn't get r00t'd =P

or you could just use a package manager instead of writing all of your own software...
masterchief3k 3 years ago
He doesn't have to write all of that software, the open source/free software community does. Think of Gentoo's portage as a package manager, but instead of using pre-compiled binary packages, it fetches source code and compiles and installs it.
wilddog129 3 years ago 3
Brilliant.
TheJacolyte 3 years ago
what's the point of compiling it yourself? Let's say I want to install Audacious, whats the difference between Portage compiling it and having APT get a pre compiled version
Amebixfan 3 years ago
Very cool :-)
What is the name of that software for compiling software in group of computers - like they say that every computer is working.
Smajchl 3 years ago
The program they are using is called distcc. You can use as many computers to compile a single program as you like, as long as they are all using linux (or for the mac users, OSX. check your xcode preferences).
ratmandutoo 3 years ago
distcc

could u please tellme how to get linux on my poweerbook g4 i tried ubuntu but it doesnt work please give me some information
crazykid120 3 years ago
u need to get the powerpc ver, G4 does not use intel architecture
loyx 3 years ago
You should look for a distribution supporting the PowerPC architecture. I know Debian and Gentoo do... Ubuntu might, but I wouldn't recommend using Ubuntu for that application anyway.
wilddog129 3 years ago
for those of you wondering, it is pronounced JEN-too
wolf1oo 3 years ago 2
The commentator pronounced Gentoo (GHEN-to) instead of (JEN-to) -- how do you pronounce it?
On a less splitting-hairs level, nice video.
Do you know how the sys admin synced up the lab computers to share the load on compiling -- was it Beaowolf (sp ?) or what?
19505555 3 years ago
distcc (distributed C compiler) is what is used to for sharing compiling load. It can be added to the /etc/make.conf file, or when compiling manually (make bzImage, for example) just add CC=distcc after 'make' on the command line. Each computer must run a distccd server for it to work.
extraketchup 3 years ago
Awesome, thanks for the info.
:-)

Jen-to.

Now schools are seeing why Linux is far superior. But, when you have more power, you must make sure you know what your doing.
The main problem is allot of times school techs are...umm...idiots.
Pitastesgood 3 years ago 4
Is that a complement or an insult? :-)
extraketchup 3 years ago
Just speaking from experience :P
Pitastesgood 3 years ago
I agree, even here in Germany it's so too.
Our network- and sysadmin IS a complete idiot.
The only programming language he knows is Basic, Our servers run Windows 2000 and workstations XP. He's too scared to install a Linux distro.
I'm still trying to convince him to convert at least the server..

that guy is at the peak of total system control, what all geeks strive for

i dont care what type of computer i use. i usually just use computers for chatting, vlogging, blogging, wikipedia.. thats it.. &music.. thats why im still on vista..

Se poi la fase finale di creazione del binario + quella di pubblicazione sul server viene automatizzata si otterra' la soluzione perfetta!
Gentoo Rulez (H)
Microsoft Sucks :D :P

LOL tux and kde on the walls ;) Very nice, I wish my school did the same thing.
captainphlaxis 4 years ago 2
WRONG compiling doesnt allow you to select the features you want, USE flags do.
CaPaRiCa 4 years ago
Normal people don't know what USE flags are. He meant that compiling allows users to choose features at build-time.
As a side note, distcc on 21 computers... wish I could do that at home! :D
Ormaaj 4 years ago 3
oh, why I'm not able to use Linux?? :'(
I had to reinstall vista (don't beat me please..) and something has happened, I think vista has deleted a file that allows the pc to "see" 2 OS, vista and Gentoo, so now I have to find a way to see gentoo and make this file, the problem is that I've not informatic knowledge....I have a lot of work to do.
ps:sorry for my English, I'm italian...
pps: wonderful video! great big Tux!
lirelis 4 years ago
just erase your hard drive a start from scratch. You don't need windows anyways, i use wine for that.
Zoowey07 4 years ago
Windows always has to be #1. When you installed Vista, it wrote over your boot loader. Always install Windows first then your linux distro when you are doing a dual boot.
graffatag 4 years ago
Just re-install grub...
Ormaaj 4 years ago
Reinstall your bootloader. Vista has modified the MBR (the thing that tells your PC where the operating systems are on the hard drive) in a way that keeps your bootloader from working properly. Basically, it is skipping past the bootloader and going straight to Vista. Just reinstall the bootloader or (at worst) reinstall Linux.
therealdjsephiroth 3 years ago
I don't know if I'd call Gentoo "easy," it's notorious for being one of the harder distributions to install. It's awesome that they're using the network as a farm to compile programs. That sysadmin is a dude.
RcColanator 4 years ago 6
amazing i just hope other schools will look into this. LINUX PWNS.
paranoial33t 4 years ago
at least these kids will grow up with some skillz. Teach linux and then can come out of high school making more than their parents! Go gentoo. Props for getting the school to let you use linux.
shadowcipher 4 years ago 5
Yeah, it's kind of like what they say about Red Hat: if you learn any other distro, you learn that distro, but if you learn Red Hat, you learn Linux. I think something similar can be said of Gentoo.
therealdjsephiroth 3 years ago
wow they got the linux penguin and the KDE logo on the wall. how uber is that!
snowey1337 4 years ago 3
Yeah, I'm all for Linux, AND all for Christian schools, so this video OWNS! (Running Fedora Core 5 over here, but i'd like to try out gentoo when i get my hands on some different hardware. Not looking forward to messing up my bootloader messing around with partitions:p)
theralfinator 5 years ago
i wonder if a calculator install ever needs a reboot. I dont even know if Linux users have ever used Windows. I have, I know Linux is good but not for everything.
xtinctspecies 5 years ago
u just type "emerge xcalc" on the command line, and boom! It gets installed!
mushk45 5 years ago
For many of us, it was using Windows that DROVE us to use Linux :-)
extraketchup 5 years ago
I used windows primarily.
Now I have $1200 worth of M$ server software
sitting in a box. Now my server runs gentoo....
It was very har converting to linux, but it was
completely worth it. Linux can da everything windows does.
