California Poppy can also be taken in a tincture which is better than smoking to get a better effect. Because it goes into your blood stream. It has a mild opiod effect, very mild.

I like smoking it with a cup of California poppy tea seems to intensify the effects. I'm also considering mixing California Poppy with other "legal" poppies like Mexican Prickly Poppy and Red Poppy to see if it will be more intense.

I just smoked 3 small rollies stuffed with dried CA poppy leaves and stems. I feel more relaxed now than I did before smoking them. I can't say for sure whether it was the poppies or just chilling out for a while smoking them.

there is permanent ringing from otc medications too. I don't think its common with california poppy I heard about morning glories causing ringing too I wouldn't worry about it.

It would also be drastically difficult for the government to ban california poppies, given it's native to the west coast, grows voraciously, and is extremely common in gardens.

Technically they are illegal, but since they are popular in gardening, and since the seeds are often used in baking, the law is not enforced unless a large amount are being grown, since it takes many poppies to produce even a small amount of opium anyways.

why dont you grow some somniferums then u would really experience the effect of Poppys ....i dont smoke them much [occasionally] but do utilise all the plant for its painkilling properties ,pods for tea [excellent for insomnia + great dreams-off in the arms of morpheus ] and poppy paste [opium] for all other painrelief cases ....toothache cuts/wounds ,it is also as u say an excellent anti cough remedy but hey these plants are a gift not to be underestimated otherwise enjoy!we can here in NL !!

One of the alkaloids present in California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is Sanguinarine ( SOURCE: The Merck Index). Sanguinarine is likewise present in another member of the poppy family, the Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis). This alkaloid was used to induce glaucoma in experiments on laboratory animals (SOURCE: Merck Index). Bloodroot was used as an emetic and also in a mixture with other herbs to clean gums and teeth (MATERIA MEDICA & PHARMACOGNOSY). I feel iffy about smoking this poppy.

@vusiliyK Some stores also carry Kava Kava, but people who have Hep-C should be careful using it. There are rare reports of skin rashes and jaundice when it comes to Kava Kava. California Poppy extracts sold in my state are standardized. California poppy have other alkaloids besides Sanguinarine ( such as:Protopine and Papaverine).Albert Hofmann once wrote: "The dose determines whether the substance acts as a remedy or a poison". I ask others to use good judgement and not rely on blind faith.

@Nguli34689 I don't think that there is enough Sanguinarine present in the California Poppy to cause great concern as one would be with Bloodroot. Papaverine is used as a vasodialator in the same way Niacin is used and it could have some beneficial effect on the human brain and memory. Prickly Poppy (Argemone mexicana) is similar in its alkaloidal content as the California poppy. Oriental Poppy has Thebaine present in the root & latex. Overindulgence in any substance is not recommended.

@lowlandzero59 You can get a good ounce of seeds on ebay for a few dollars. You merely scatter them on the soil (which must have been weeded and preferably composted) and then mix the soil to a depth of maybe an inch or so with a rake or your hands, then keep it watered til the plants are large and flowering.
