  • Go France!

  • Unfortunately, most Americans have not read M. de Tocqueville's classic work. Unfortunately, only 3.5% of Americans are fully literate.

  • wait, what is the difference between being literate and being " fully literate?"

  • There are three levels of literacy with active literacy being the highest. In the America visited by Tocqueville, over 90% Americans were in possession of the active literacies. Why was this the case? Tocqueville himself tells us (and I'm paraphrasing):

"I could go into the remotest cabin in the Smoky Mountains and if I find anything on the mantel it will be the collected works of William Shakespeare and the King James Bible."

  • Sometimes I agree with you, but I take offense at foreigners saying so...

  • The only thing I learned in an U.S. public school is, NOT to depend on public teaching. Ironically an US public school can teach you "self reliance "

  • Yes but have any French people ! This is the first video on You Tube in French about De Tocqueville and all the preceding ones ( about 100) are in English. Perhaps I have missed them or do the French not read him. God help us in the EU if the French do not read him.
