I've loved this song since I was a kid. What impresses me about this video is it shows the continueum in the fight for social justice. Yes, one voice, one person can make all the difference in the world.
i'm 21 and that's my childhood. my father and mother they used to dance to this song every saturday evening in our living room, and i used to dance with them.. beautiful times, and they still dance to this song!
In the car my dad told me he was warmed up for the hooters in 1983 in philidelphia he said there was 20,000 people there. pretty proud he warmed up for such a great band.
wow...as i said before a great video, combined with the amazing song of course...i think they coud had shown more of the tankman, however just awesome :D
Thin and whispy...the sounds of the over produced micromanaged prepacked music from the 80's. Decent folk inspired song from Rob and Eric but where is the acoustic guitar and harmonies that should accompany the words and melody? This tune cries out for a loud Gibson humbucker guitar solo in the middle as a hook instead we get the typical 80's fender minimalist cheesy twangy solo confined to 10 seconds and then disappears. LIke most 80's music its sterile and devoid of life.
@SOLISDEUS Wow, if only this band of professional artists had thought to hire you as their musical supervisor back in the day, they would've been saved from cultural and aesthetic ignorance. I'll bet you could've turned this touching, heartfelt ballad into a roaring power ballad if they'd listened to you. Hell, I'll bet you could've convinced John Lilley to give up the mandolin and use an acoustic guitar just like every other 'sensitive' musician before him.
This songs is just my life....I left my hometown in south Brazil 6 years ago cos had to move to another fucking part of the same country to realize that the same place I was born is the best one in ther world ......in fact I miss it a lot....I can't wait to go back there
Hedy West originally wrote this song...it was a song her dad made up in bits and pieces and would sing her to sleep with at nights...in 1962 she finally decided to write what he was trying to sing to her...later in the 60s The Brothers Four recorded it but it wasnt til Peter,Paul, and Mary sang it did it become famous and Bob Dylan used it on a couple of his albums......
@zindrick114 This is taken from the Peter Paul & Mary version, not Bobby Bare lyrics.
I saw an interview where Bobby said that he was driving somewhere and heard Peter, Paul & Mary doing it on his radio. He told himself that he just had to record that song, but by the time he got home he had forgotten the lyrics. I remembered the melody and theme, though, so he just wrote his own lyrics. THIS is obviously taken from the Folk versions, though.
But I wanted to talk about the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989. Many of the protesters in fact most of them were hardcore communist party members and Trotskyists who didn't like the reforms of Deng Xiaoping moving the country into unstable market economy.
@ToddMcCreary Yes I am already aware of that thank you :P But since this is the version we're listening to and commenting on, silly me to think it might also be the one we referring to :P lol
Where went this world wrong? Even the chipmunks get more views than these songs. Why? Where is our sense for real music? I don't understand why songs are nicer if they're sung in a way to high voice (Chipmunks, Justin Bieber)? Fuck this world. 80's rule!
@Eyeball1711 I feel bad for you, the world moves one, so should you. You don't need to like todays music, but stop whining about it not being as good as it was in the 80's, new generations have different tastes, get used to it.
whoever said that the Bassist here sucks well better read some music theory, bass ain't only about fancy slappin' and poppin' stuff, the bass here fits the song like no other bassline fancy or not wil ever do and yes their bassist is skilled,so ppl before open your mouth better open your minds first!

@FunkyAxl11 they say that because modern days basists sucks, all good bass players are old school, and old. Young ones r just in some emo or fake hard core shit....
But a skill isnt the only thing that u must have as a bass player... you must get your tone to sound great, and that is very hard. I mean, Motorhead, or Queen, supereb tone and bass players

The is one of the best 500 miles with its tapping beat of a music, A sad and happy mixed and you can dance to the tuned or weep. The added words "Ill be free, Ill be free" was nice. The videos are touching, haunting, mournful and appropriate. A lovely lovely song and great music. Love it !

Thin and whispy...the sounds of the over produced micromanaged prepacked music from the 80's. This tune cries out for a loud Gibson humbucker guitar solo in the middle as a hook instead we get the typical 80's fender minimalist cheesy twangy solo confined to 10 seconds and then disappears. LIke most 80's music its sterile and devoid of life.
