I honestly am blown away watching these old promos of Dusty and Ric Flair. These two were the cream of the crop with those old school promos. Man oh man I wish more wrestlers cut promos like this in WWE. There's no passion or emotion anymore; it's all paint by numbers, "I'm gonna beat you, I'm the best. The end." The Rock and Mick Foley are probably two of the best in modern times.

Dark promos were my favorite too; Jake Roberts and Raven could kill with their promos.

Also if you read Superstar Billy Grahams book (a great one btw), he said Vince sr. planned on Graham having belt for 10 months, since Bruno didn'd want to be champion any more and then for Graham to Drop to Backlund in 78'

@lovejava04 Dusty's main/home promotion was Championship Wrestling from Florida at this time. Back then the WWWF was an active member of the NWA, so for big shows they would bring in stars from other territories. But there was no way Dusty would have been WWF champion since he was one of Vince Sr.'s guys. He won his first NWA championship around this time, which was much bigger than the WWWF title anyways.

@jshkendra From 1971 to 1983, the WWF was a part of the NWA (after Vince Sr. left in 1963). The WWF was truly a regional promotion (from DC to New England and west to Pittsburgh). When Vince Jr. took over and looked to make the WWF national, he broke away from the NWA. There is (or was) footage of Harley Race wrestling on the WWF show and billed as the NWA World Champion. Backlund appeared on Georgia Championship Wrestling as WWF Champ.

@wndebu Vince punished everyone who came from the NWA/WCW. Vince has never appreciated any "gimic" that he did not create. As the former head booker of NWA/WCW, Dusty was the symbol of "the enemy". So Vince saddled him with the HORRIBLE polka dot gimic; even making him drag a homeless woman around with him. In spite of the dumb outfit and bag lady, Dusty was so good that he actually got over with the crowd.

how the hell dusty never even got a shot at the wwe title is slowly becoming beyond me. he laid down promos that captivated crowds, his matches were always entertaining to watch if not considered great, and his character was one that most people could connect to.

sooo any opinions on why yokozuna could win the title from hogan at the king of the ring in 1993, but dusty couldn't ever get a damn title shot in wwe?

Exactly, I've always wondered about that myself. Definitely should have been the World Champion. There's no like him, no one before had his charisma and no one since. The closest was maybe Ric Flair and Hogan. But, Hogan learn everything he knows from Dusty and Superstar Billy Graham.

So Dusty did get his shot, it was just that a lot of us, myself included, was not born then.

@MJH281 good point, i wasn't born when dusty cut this interview, or when dusty fought billy graham, so of course i wouldnt know about the three shots. it's just that the fact that vince let yokozuna beat hogan for the belt -- yet dusty never beat graham for the belt -- surprises me. a samoan guy at nearly 400-500 pounds managed by fuji had one of the longest runs with the title after beating one of wwe's icons, yet the father of two of its superstars never even got one run

As for Yokozuna, Hogan was on his way out of the WWE and Yoko's title reign was roughly 9 months, nowhere near one of the longest runs

What are you talking about? I think some people tend to forget that the WWF/WWE was not always the biggest game in town. In fact during the 70s they were just another territory. Dusty on the other hand had already held the most prestigious title at the time (the NWA world title) and was fairly well known to wrestling fans all over the world. Anyway the most over wrestler in the UK during the 80s was Big Daddy, and he makes Dusty look like Ricky Steamboat in comparison.

When Vince Jr brought in Dusty in the 90s Dust was near retirement, his best days physically were long over. Vince brought him in to give Dust a final hoorah and a good bonus to his retirement fund. And you're wrong, Dusty was a worldwide legend even then
