the problem today is that no one can cut a promo. when they are backstage, you can see their eyes looking at the teleprompter. no one today can think on their feet like they could in the old days.
I honestly am blown away watching these old promos of Dusty and Ric Flair. These two were the cream of the crop with those old school promos. Man oh man I wish more wrestlers cut promos like this in WWE. There's no passion or emotion anymore; it's all paint by numbers, "I'm gonna beat you, I'm the best. The end." The Rock and Mick Foley are probably two of the best in modern times.
Dark promos were my favorite too; Jake Roberts and Raven could kill with their promos.
For those saying Dusty should have given WWF/WWE title, he may have been offered and turned it down. Dusty would work all the territories, make his money and go back south. He was NWA true and through. Also if you read Superstar Billy Grahams book (a great one btw), he said Vince sr. planned on Graham having belt for 10 months, since Bruno didn'd want to be champion any more and then for Graham to Drop to Backlund in 78'
OMG, I have a promo on VHS of dusty wearing that hat, but w/o the crowd, old school promo with Vince & Dusty was going in on Superstar Billy Graham & he was talking about how Superstar's wife was going to get on his case for letting Dusty whip up on him. oh man that was hilarious. I have to upload it.
@4JayeP I was going to say the same thing. The slow head turn says to me (Vince's brain- "yes! definite return on investment" lol) It'd be years later till Dusty returned in polka dots....Oh professional wrestling...Sucks so bad now!
This was back when Vince Sr. owned the WWWF and worked with the NWA and its promoters.Sr. was friends with alot promoters in the NWA.His son Vince Jr. is the one that screwed up everything, and made wrestling into a joke like it is today.
It's so sad that WWF/WWE never made Dusty Rhodes the world champion. Dusty Rhodes could wrestle, had charisma, and could cut a promo like no other. He paved the way for professional wrestling. Yes he surely did. "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes put wrestling on the map.
@lovejava04 Dusty's main/home promotion was Championship Wrestling from Florida at this time. Back then the WWWF was an active member of the NWA, so for big shows they would bring in stars from other territories. But there was no way Dusty would have been WWF champion since he was one of Vince Sr.'s guys. He won his first NWA championship around this time, which was much bigger than the WWWF title anyways.
WWWF drop the ball with Dusty Rhodes and Graham feud. They could have use them to transition into the Hulkmania era. I would giving the WWF title to Dusty Rhodes
@jshkendra From 1971 to 1983, the WWF was a part of the NWA (after Vince Sr. left in 1963). The WWF was truly a regional promotion (from DC to New England and west to Pittsburgh). When Vince Jr. took over and looked to make the WWF national, he broke away from the NWA. There is (or was) footage of Harley Race wrestling on the WWF show and billed as the NWA World Champion. Backlund appeared on Georgia Championship Wrestling as WWF Champ.
@RayNDeere Vince Sr. was on the nwa board. Backlund and Flair wrestled in 81-82 around there. I miss those days of wrestling. I think Race and Backlund also wrestled.
@wndebu Vince punished everyone who came from the NWA/WCW. Vince has never appreciated any "gimic" that he did not create. As the former head booker of NWA/WCW, Dusty was the symbol of "the enemy". So Vince saddled him with the HORRIBLE polka dot gimic; even making him drag a homeless woman around with him. In spite of the dumb outfit and bag lady, Dusty was so good that he actually got over with the crowd.
how the hell dusty never even got a shot at the wwe title is slowly becoming beyond me. he laid down promos that captivated crowds, his matches were always entertaining to watch if not considered great, and his character was one that most people could connect to.
sooo any opinions on why yokozuna could win the title from hogan at the king of the ring in 1993, but dusty couldn't ever get a damn title shot in wwe?
Exactly, I've always wondered about that myself. Definitely should have been the World Champion. There's no like him, no one before had his charisma and no one since. The closest was maybe Ric Flair and Hogan. But, Hogan learn everything he knows from Dusty and Superstar Billy Graham.
@showstopper316 Well in polka dots, Dusty did not have a shot, but at the time of this interview which would be 1977, Dusty would get three shots at the title held by Superstar Billy Graham, including the first Bull-rope match at MSG. So Dusty did get his shot, it was just that a lot of us, myself included, was not born then.
@MJH281 good point, i wasn't born when dusty cut this interview, or when dusty fought billy graham, so of course i wouldnt know about the three shots. it's just that the fact that vince let yokozuna beat hogan for the belt -- yet dusty never beat graham for the belt -- surprises me. a samoan guy at nearly 400-500 pounds managed by fuji had one of the longest runs with the title after beating one of wwe's icons, yet the father of two of its superstars never even got one run
@showstopper316 Dusty never won the WWE title but he was 3 time NWA World Champ back when the NWA was king and the WWWF (which is this era) was still regional, and his feud with Graham over the WWWF title was one of the greatest feuds ever. As for Yokozuna, Hogan was on his way out of the WWE and Yoko's title reign was roughly 9 months, nowhere near one of the longest runs
@showstopper316 Dusty didnt fit vinces idea of champ material. To the people who knew him his fans or those who were familiar with him he was well liked...to the world wide audience its a different matter, and thats what vince was about, building a world wide franchise, a global name in sports entertainment...you show dusty to someone in the UK at that time or anywhere else and they'd say the same words that left my mouth when i first set eyes on him....."this guys a fat ugly mother f**ker".
What are you talking about? I think some people tend to forget that the WWF/WWE was not always the biggest game in town. In fact during the 70s they were just another territory. Dusty on the other hand had already held the most prestigious title at the time (the NWA world title) and was fairly well known to wrestling fans all over the world. Anyway the most over wrestler in the UK during the 80s was Big Daddy, and he makes Dusty look like Ricky Steamboat in comparison.
@spanglehoff You're mixing up your times here. This vid was from the 70s, WWWF, Vince Sr was running it, and the world of CableTV, Sports Entertainment, and global empires was still a long way off. When Vince Jr brought in Dusty in the 90s Dust was near retirement, his best days physically were long over. Vince brought him in to give Dust a final hoorah and a good bonus to his retirement fund. And you're wrong, Dusty was a worldwide legend even then
@showstopper316 Dusty got several shots at the WWF title. He faced Superstar Billy Graham in 3 main events at MSG & got a title shot at Bob Backlund in Japan.
Just look at Vince...he loves it!! They say that Vince put Dusty in polka dots later in his career as a joke. I don't understand that when he seems so into Dusty's character here.
My mother said the same thing when I use to watch NWA World Championship Wrestling one day. My mom didn't follow wrestling, I just was watching it in the living room on a saturday when Dusty was talking. the way he talked got her attention, and she said, "He sounds like a preacher." LOL
Yeah I dont think he is generally racist but I dont know...I heard he was just a big hick backstage and that him and ric flair used to say they didnt want no niggers wearing the belt like they did...
Nah Dusty is not racist, if anything he loves black people just listen to how he talks. You can find one of this recent interviews on here where he talks about how he grew up around mostly blacks.
well good because I remember reading an interview in one of the old school wrestler magazines where him and flair said "no nigger would ever be on there level"
@oldschool6804 LOL and you beleieve anything that New Jack says then your a moron. BTW, you should be careful throwing the term "mark" around when your the idiot who keeps saying that wrestling is real idiot.
@oldschool6804 "I know wrestling is real because my mommy said so, and I'm not stupid you are!" You debate like a 6 year old. Get afucking life loser!
@oldschool6804 the reason i said a lot wreestling s real is because ther are many documente inring injuries that substantate tht fact! FAKE is a misnr dickhead!
@ItsQuietIsntIt Guilt by association? Really? His old tag partner was in the Klan so Dusty must've been too? If Murdoch was Klan he wasn't hardcore, he never brought it into the ring and was never unwilling to wrestle, or even lose to, non-whites. His personal views offstage, like them or not, are his own and he has every right to them, just as you or I have to ours. But more then likely if Murdoch was Klan it was because his father was Klan.
never seen a racist dusty, & dont think he was one just cause he was friends with murdoch either. infact as you said, i've not seen murdoch brining the baggage to the ring.considering business of the time,i've seen billy graham, harley race or greg valentine being much more racially offensive on screen.
but about him having 'every right', thats bs.no place for prejudice against fellow humans.simply put he had NO RIGHT to hate & there's no justification of him being part of the klan
@sayanroy36 Actually there is, it's called the Constitution of the United States and the 1st Ammendmant, the freedom of belief and freedom of speech. You don't have to agree with their beliefs, or even like them, and personally I think Aryans and Klansmen are ignorant pieces of shit, but so long as they don't try to force their beliefs on others they do have every right to believe them
the good ol' 1rst amendment.but i wasnt talking about legal justification my friend,i was taking about humane/moral justification.just like abortion; & our judiciary has never exactly been some' to boast about, has it?there's some hundred thousand white collars legally tweaking the law everyday, doesn't mean they aren't criminals
also, since the klan has a well documented criminal history including terrorism & suppression of the same bill of rights, its a marked org,to say the least
@sayanroy36 LOL Amazing how you psuedo intellectual assholes feel that the only ppl entitled to rights are those that just happen to agree with you LOL. how convient. Why don't you go fuck yourself shithead.
if you think dehumanizing others, thinking people of a darker skin color are inferior, being a proponent of slavery & kkk (of which the topic was about) is your right.then go back 100yrs
there's nothing about agreeing with me, its pure & simple morality. & thats what normal people around the world thinks..a lot of the racism we'r talking about has gone back to the closet (& the keyboard) where it belongs.
oh btw, thanks for the insults...cant expect anything from a douche like you.
@sayanroy36 Funny, I didn't mention anything about that or say that I believed in that. You really need to work on your reading comprehension skills.Nice try trying to put words in my mouth though jackass. What I was discussing was a pompous douche like you appointing yourself the moral judge over just who should & shouldn't get rights based on your interpratation of their views. A typical holier then thou jackass.
u replied-"only people entitled to rights are those just happen to agree with you"
to my comment to the guy about how slavery, being in kkk,or being a bigot is immoral, even if its protected by the 1rst amendment.its not me being a "moral judge", but proven knowledge.plain & simple
so what other side/ view exactly is there to this?oh yeah, the side of a supremacist/racist.
& you'r also being a hypocrite, by saying "not that i agree with those"
@sayanroy36 You can spout all the psuedo intellecutal double talk all you want. Fact is this isn't even a vid for a political debate its about entertainment, but typical of the holier-then-thou, moral crusading phony you are you were unable to resist the urge to turn it into a debate on race relations & take the opportunity to try lord your moral superiority over the great unwashed & enlighten others to your morally superior views. GFY!
pseudo intellectual double talk? i've had enough. who the fuck are you to judge if im a pseudo-intellectual or not? i never claimed to be anything. & i never said anyone with other opinions are wrong. so stop putting words in my mouth dumbas.
'turn it into a debate of race relations'. I NEVER DID MORON. you'r the fuckin dumbass who's posted insulting replies to a 2 month old comment where i was defending dusty of NOT being racist, to start a keyboard flame.what a hypocrite
(contd.) & btw jackass, i DIDNT TURN ANYTHING INTO ANYTHING, HE WAS ALREADY TALKING ABOUT THE ISSUE.atleast he was intelligent enough to continue a conversation without 6ht grade insults.
and IF YOU HAVE SUCH a FUCKIN SUPPORT with simple concepts like kkk & white supremacy..then its evident that you'r nothing but a fuckin bigot.
what else is there to explain moron? tell me
if calling racism bad, makes you "holier than thou" than so be it. atleast im not a hypocritical keyword warrior like you
The only wrestler ever in the business of all time to go with Micky Mouse tee shirt and such a loudy hat is the man, Dusty Rhodes, I believe.lol I've got to admit it somehow i was so attracted to The American Dream a plumber's son.
When attempting to punk out the heavyweight champion of the world. I feel its imperative that you NOT wear a yellow be-dazzled hat and Micky Mouse T-shirt. Maybe thats just me though...

You don't have to agree with their beliefs, or even like them, and personally I think Aryans and Klansmen are ignorant pieces of shit, but so long as they don't try to force their beliefs on others they do have every right to believe them

@FerretJohn
the good ol' 1rst amendment.but i wasnt talking about legal justification my friend,i was taking about humane/moral justification.just like abortion; & our judiciary has never exactly been some' to boast about, has it?there's some hundred thousand white collars legally tweaking the law everyday, doesn't mean they aren't criminals
also, since the klan has a well documented criminal history including terrorism & suppression of the same bill of rights, its a marked org,to say the least
sayanroy36 1 year ago
@sayanroy36 LOL Amazing how you psuedo intellectual assholes feel that the only ppl entitled to rights are those that just happen to agree with you LOL. how convient. Why don't you go fuck yourself shithead.

@Lfdjake91
if you think dehumanizing others, thinking people of a darker skin color are inferior, being a proponent of slavery & kkk (of which the topic was about) is your right.then go back 100yrs
there's nothing about agreeing with me, its pure & simple morality. & thats what normal people around the world thinks..a lot of the racism we'r talking about has gone back to the closet (& the keyboard) where it belongs.
oh btw, thanks for the insults...cant expect anything from a douche like you.
sayanroy36 1 year ago
@sayanroy36 Funny, I didn't mention anything about that or say that I believed in that. You really need to work on your reading comprehension skills.Nice try trying to put words in my mouth though jackass. What I was discussing was a pompous douche like you appointing yourself the moral judge over just who should & shouldn't get rights based on your interpratation of their views. A typical holier then thou jackass.

@Lfdjake91
u replied-"only people entitled to rights are those just happen to agree with you"
to my comment to the guy about how slavery, being in kkk,or being a bigot is immoral, even if its protected by the 1rst amendment.its not me being a "moral judge", but proven knowledge.plain & simple
so what other side/ view exactly is there to this?oh yeah, the side of a supremacist/racist.
& you'r also being a hypocrite, by saying "not that i agree with those"
& yet challenging simple humane concepts
sayanroy36 1 year ago
@sayanroy36 You can spout all the psuedo intellecutal double talk all you want. Fact is this isn't even a vid for a political debate its about entertainment, but typical of the holier-then-thou, moral crusading phony you are you were unable to resist the urge to turn it into a debate on race relations & take the opportunity to try lord your moral superiority over the great unwashed & enlighten others to your morally superior views. GFY!
Lfdjake91 1 year ago
@Lfdjake91
pseudo intellectual double talk? i've had enough. who the fuck are you to judge if im a pseudo-intellectual or not? i never claimed to be anything. & i never said anyone with other opinions are wrong. so stop putting words in my mouth dumbas.
'turn it into a debate of race relations'. I NEVER DID MORON. you'r the fuckin dumbass who's posted insulting replies to a 2 month old comment where i was defending dusty of NOT being racist, to start a keyboard flame.what a hypocrite
sayanroy36 1 year ago

This promo is so special, I've never heard a wrestling crowd react the way they did to Dusty :)

What a rare find. Dusty worked the WWF for just a little bit in 1978-79. He and Graham battled in a number of regions (Texas, Florida and WWF)

When attempting to punk out the heavyweight champion of the world. I feel its imperative that you NOT wear a yellow be-dazzled hat and Micky Mouse T-shirt. Maybe thats just me though...

dusty is the man. The greatest speakers in the history of mankind are Martin Luther King , Mohammad Ali and Dusty Rhodes. In no perticular order.
